Adding to this headcanon, Mega Man 11 really pushes the boundary of classic's tech, skirting just below the edge of what X was capable of. Rock can almost do what X can, in 11, but not quite (no wall jump, no true boost dash), and doing so causes him to overload his systems. If they wanted to continue the series after 11, for one final game, it would actually line up perfectly with what 11 set up, if Rock and Bass were upgraded into X and Zero with their memories wiped. They could even sell it as the chronologically really final for absolutely sure this time in the classic timeline, by having Light and Wily die at the end of old age, with their final acts each being sealing their upgraded robots into the pods.


Even if that's never the case, I do like how 11 bridges the gap, and retcons Wily's ambition to create ultra powerful robots, as a corruption of his younger self's dream to create real life Kamen Rider type robots, doing shit like saving kids from burning buildings or stopping old ladies from getting run over. The subtle call forward to Zero, with his desire to create

Chou Hyakka and Daihyakka Rockman X books don't go into exact detail, we just know the government banned robots after they had enough of Wily's shit but it is believed by some fans Mega Man works under a stable time loop and he's doomed to become Quint, thus being destroyed by himself and whatever Wily from the future decides to do, it is enough to lead to the Robot Ban, in which Robot Masters become replaced with Mechaniloids.
