11006023 No.11006023 [Reply] [Original]

The sticks on the Nintendo 64 controllers won't last much longer. I have three controllers, and they're all on their last legs. I have been looking around for a replacement, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive good answer. What do you use? What works and what doesn't?

>> No.11006031

I'm actually wondering the same. I see a comolete module, but it looks cheap. I've seen something made by a speed runner called Brewsticks, a metal "bowl" for the analog stick that's like 40 bucks alone. And trying to learn anything about them is a nightmare.

>> No.11006039

Tbh outside of spending a good amount of money on steel stick youre best bet it probably kitsch bent parts. They aren’t 100% compared to the OEM but I doubt most people would notice.

I bought some kitsch bent parts along with plastic lubricant. They work but they have some problems.
First of all their bowls grip the gears too tight so I ended up just using the original ones.
Also the black gear pieces have some flashing on the part that rests on the bowl and causes problems. You can file or scrape it off with a knife and then it'll work fine. I've heard some people say they got a "bad batch" and ordered more but it's easily fixable.

Kind of just shit out of luck until steelsticks are more readily available or something better comes along. The Kitsch Bent sticks are the biggest meme on the fucking planet, you're expected to sand the parts down yourself because they don't come out of the 3D printer correctly plus lubing it up yourself sucks and even after all of that theyre still not as good as a worn down OEM stick. I appreciate that they're dirt cheap at the very least but christ I would easily pay good money for a decent stick that finally fixes this bullshit once and for all.

As time passes and there is not much left in terms of original hardware, the demand will lead to a 8BitDo level N64 controller. It will be expensive but no doubt it will be made of parts to last.

And then the market for N64 controllers will soften

These are genuinely good. Cheap on Amazon and the calibration isn't far off from a fresh stick. Zero complaints with mine.

They come out of the 3D printer exactly as intended, made evident by the fact that they don't do post-processing (as per your won complaint.)

I have SLA and FDM printers. You literally have to do work after the print by nature of how they work.

You need to look at the n64 speed running community for the stick replacements. Check out taostyx64. You can get metal bowls from there right now.

8Bitdo replacement stick is the only answer, it reaches 80 on all axis, has no deadzone, has proper steppings and the right gating, its nearly perfect and better than literally 99% of oem sticks out there currently, unless you compare it to a never used one.
It is also compatible with control freeks for shooters.
I have always been a n64fag, one that actually likes the oem controller, trust me, this stick is perfect.
I have beaten PD, GE, Jet force gemini and turok 2 with it.

My launch controller joystick did finally crap out in the late 2000s.
The moment I first held that stick I realised it was not the most robust design and even dreaded the bowser fights in M64.
I also never owned mario party or any other game that requires spastic stick rotation, and yet it still wore out over time.
I did use it a lot though, and was also my only controller for most of the time.
These things just wear out with sufficient use.

Retro-Bit Tribute 64 is a decent option
Don't listen to anyone who claims the Hori minipad is better. It's not. In fact it's kinda shit because of the stick. Even the cheapest chinkiest most chinesium N64 controllers I've seen don't have sticks that click in, but the Hori does. It's literally just a standard third party analog stick like you'd see on some non-branded DualShock clone complete with a fucking L3 for some reason.

I use this. I have an RGB modded N64, but for whatever reason my CRT doesn't let you fiddle with image settings on an RBG signal, forcing me to settle on S-Video. I like it, it gives a far superior image than a shitty chinese one on amazon would, and it looks/feels durable and bespoke.

Official versions exist ofc, but good fucking luck lol

I already kind of spoonfed by mentioning taostyx64 and speed running. Imagine what N64 speed runners do since N64 sticks wear out so quickly. They literally wear their sticks down in less than a month. What they do is autistically make better and better metal parts for n64 sticks over and over again, and they talk about it on discord and sell them on small shops that mostly only speed runners know about. They NEED those metal parts. So if you want a metal stick, FUCK steel sticks. It's time to hop on discord to find out where the sticks, bowls, gears, caps, gates, etc are. Most parts are available at all times. Usually the stick is what you have to wait for "drops" on. They get sold regularly though.

The stick is the same but the actual internal mechanism is completely different. It's like a weird hodge podge of the N64 gears/spring and modern controller stickboxes with trimpot resistors. It actually moves and tracks authentically like the original stick, and for me that's enough.

I use one on my own N64, and even though it feels identical it actually isn't internally.
It uses potentiometers instead of optical encoders, but the bowl also comes lubed from the factory to prolong the stick's life.
Unless the stick starts to drift, though, I'm perfectly content with it.

If you ignore all the manchildren and speedrunning transgender women and just look at the functionality of what a stick does, there's no good reason to use a more expensive production process. All a stick does is spitting out x and y coordinates.
