Players in the west back then played games for challenge, it was one of the most important factor. Marketing, reviews, and even manuals reflect that. This aspect of video games has been largely forgotten these days.

The concept of challenge used to be the number 1 driving force of video games in the west so it's not surprising a manual would put skill in high regards.

DS game was sensical for the main path, then you gain the ability to "change Fox's destiny" or whatever to see if you can get a better (but usually worse) ending and it becomes a huge mess. There's a branch or few where you follow Star Wolf, yeah? Only they have no equivalent to ROB and the Great Fox, which is integral for gameplay. So I guess it's ROB making the decision to join Star Wolf? Except I thought it was established that FOX was the one making these decisions in-universe. No explanation for why ROB can do this, btw.
No, there isn't a Star Fox game where you can actually act as mercenary group. It's like getting Samus to act as a bounty hunter. Nintendo doesn't know what these things are.

Yeah, but we never really see what else they do when the Cornerian army's not hiring them. Star Wolf is presumably what they could be if they amorally worked for the highest bidder. I vaguely remember some interview where Shiggy or some other guy said they didn't see SF as just a rail shooter series, which explains some of the experimentations they tried. Those failed so they went back to rail shooter but at the same time it couldn't just be the same but more so they tried a few different gimmicks for the controls and have since given up. I'm sure we're going to see the series again though.
>>10970902
For what it's worth I think that's a valiant approach. It avoids the usual problem of sequels just being more of the same if not worse because its ideas that were originally cut for not being up to par and the further along the series gets the more the bottom of the barrel gets scrapped for ideas. That being said I'm sure a lot of Nintendo devs have come up with binders' worth of ideas for SF and Shiggy thinks it's not enough so who knows what he's looking for.

That's why I prefer the lighter 'adventurers-for-hire' than mercenary. They might take a few odd jobs, but they're Cornerian loyalists through and through. Probably why Falco leaves the team half the time, he wouldn't go full Andross like Star Wolf but he finds grey-area work much more interesting.
I had the impression James' Star Fox was an experimental proto-'Arwing' arm of the Cornerian military while Fox's Star Fox was the more independent version, but I could be wrong.
