What's everyone playing or about to play retro shooter wise?

For me, I just beat Quake 2 Remaster fully and next going for Ion Fury : Aftershock.

Might try those Quake 2 mods anon linked in one of the past threads or go back to finish Quake 1 Remaster's new episodes.

Yeah the concept was great and some of the set pieces were neat but the overall progress was at best obtuse as fuck, I had far too many "where the fuck do I go now?" moments.

One level that sticks out has you unknowingly trigger a slow looping lift a minute or so's walk away, in a wall where the lift and wall are the red brick texture, almost purposely set up so it could be all the way up and sat there for a good while whenever you passed it while looking for some sense of where to go next.

it's basically touched-up EYE combat with a side of doom eternal, it doesn't have EYE's longevity but the moment-to-moment interaction feels a lot better

It says "hard" is supposed to be the UV equivalent, but I'm finding ammo management way harder. Everything beyond zombie and sargent replacements seem pretty tanky, and I'm running out of ammo. Pistol starts seem like they'd be impossible. For the shotgun duo, I've found blasting them once with a shotgun to kill the shotgunner part, then killing the doll that chases after with the handgun to be effective.
Are you expected to use the chainsaw or fists much more frequently? I'd like to stick to vanilla weapons if possible.

A spectre-like floating ghost nigga that buffs nearby monsters, essentially turning on FastMonsters in a radius around it. There could be some kind of a limitation to it like he needs to see you and ''scream'' for it to activate for a time so he doesn't just turn chaingunners etc into instant death lasers haha.

It's actually a function I would've wamted for Redneck Rampage, making those Alien Vixens or a hotter and rarer variant make enemies faster and deadlier as well as custom lines like ''If we get him she'll reward us!'' and such maybe with more innuendo as well as seductive ''Go get 'im boys'' lines for the Vixen. But you asked for Doom so haha.

Interesting idea, I find myself only playing with fastmonsters these days as I feel like the projectiles move way to slow without it.

One possible idea I had was a monster that screamed at the player when they got close. This would enrage all the enemies in the area to aggro on the screamer, but this would then cause enemies to aggro to the player after the screamer was killed.

Id Software was not specifically discussed and Id Software was an exception and not the rule. A lot of things had to line up right for Id Software to land the opportunities they did to be able to operate in an independent manner.

If anything in the modern day small developers with taken have even more power because of crowdfunding / hybrid funding models and more accessible distribution channels / thanks to the internet the devs don't even be in the same country to be able to do teamwork.

I'm new to playing custom Doom levels. I like Smooth Doom, but how do I know if a given megawad will conflict with it? Is there a way to automatically check that a wad doesn't have custom monsters or weapons? Or is the best I can do just read the what the author mentions in the release info/shows in screenshots?

Smooth Doom adds more frames so depending on load order you might notice some from one mod and some from the other.

or if you do something like run it with Augur Zenith, you'd notice torches in weird places and maybe floating plasma balls or something that turn into nazis when they take damage.

It's an interesting thought. I suspect that like many homebrewed ports, this makes use of some technical knowledge which was less common at the time, possibly also methods for compression which didn't yet exist then either.

The Genesis as a machine can clearly handle a very faithful port of Wolfenstein 3D without getting extra help from the 32X or Sega CD, I always thought this was a cool one, but I wonder how realistic it would have been back then.
I'm not deep into this kind of knowledge, so I could be a fucking retard who's wrong, but I'm assuming there's some real reasons this one never happened.

Possibly it could be publishers being fucking fags and not being interested, remember how Lobotomy Software made a port of Quake for the Saturn? They also developed basically that same port for the Playstation as well, and they shopped it around, but no publisher took any interest in it so it just sat.

Not everyone was 'le cynical gamer' back in the day and I honestly think people these days are way too cynical about gaming in general but besides the point :

If you played Duke Nukem 3d and then saw Shadow Warrior or Blood and they had the 3drealms logo in there somewhere that's a seal of some kind of significance. Or old Electronic Arts / Activision / Capcom published games.

It's of course not the only selling point but internet as is was not nearly as informative back in the day even if you had access so it's not like you go online and find all of the things the studio had been working on and in a lot of cases the publisher has had a longer track record in publishing cool titles than whatever developer had making games.

>Modern 3D Realms feels very relevant to your point.
I would say there's a difference between brand and company acquisitions. 3D Realms was the latter. Similarly to the likes of Raven and Epic, they're still that same old legal entity and that's really the only way it should matter in... whatever way that matters.
If anything, nu-Apogee fits like a glove here as they've been going very hard on this obnoxious nostalgia baiting in the last few years. For all the stupid and embarrassing faults of 3DR, their cursed existence of recent years revolved mostly around newer things with a couple of exceptions. Trying(?) and failing to do what many people want all gaming companies to do nowadays, which is move forward.
Just don't praise the brand. It's that simple.
>People do the same thing blindly for many developers as well.
Oh yeah. And that's probably even worse than brands, but it's likely more situational.

I absolutely agree that maps doesn't have to be "believable" in any way. In fact that would probably actually made Eviternity better, if it had more chaos to it.
In Eviternity though the architecture itself is very believable and grounded, the texturing is perfectly logical and grounded, plus each mini-episode follows the same consistent, once again "grounded" visual theme. And then the monsters are just magically slapped on top of these maps after every single switch/key, it feels like a wasted opportunity. To me it ruined the whole "themed mini-episodes" idea because every theme boils down to mindlessly teleporting the monsters to you, they are supposed to be different episodes yet they all feel the same.

And ZDoom is capable of applying these effects further so it's not a limitation.

But, when I tried to edit the standard definitions, i couldn't get it to work. I don't understand the descriptions of the parameters and fiddling around and changing values randomly did not yield much results. “Mindlessly teleporting monsters” reminds me of that part in Suburbs or Slayer. Eviternity did not often feel as “mindless”, and when it did it was a fun dumb caco cloud.
It reads more to me like you find levels less “believable” when monsters are teleported in. Is it just a concern with Eviternity? Lost Civilization also teleports enemies in a lot of the time and I find the levels no less fascinating or “believable”.

5 monsters on the map and another 50(100,150) teleported? That's bullshit territory in my book. Why is the level so empty? Once again, that's not a problem per se, but almost EVERY level feels empty.

For example antares031's map is one of my favorite because it has both.
Gossamer is one of my least favorite maps even though Mechadon is a great mapper, but the level itself is completely barren.
Elysium is a great map, even though it's barren and relies on teleports as well. That's because the map itself feels like a surreal set of encounters, you're literally fling between multiple arenas, it's a journey, a set of challenges, it's believable till the very last imp.
And the best Eviternity map just have ~200 carefully pre-placed imps (among other monsters) shooting at you ass. It has half a thousand lost souls that not just magically teleport to some vague area in front of you because the mapper was too lazy, you can literally see the huge fucking building in the middle of the map opening its windows and all the souls charging towards you. Archviles are not magically teleported because you touched some vague "prepare your anus" linedef, they are locked in cages, they're guarding the key, and there's a bunker that was explicitly built for the specific purpose of dealing with them when they get out of cages. Seriously, I can suck this map till humanity run out of computers to run Doom. Ola is genius.

"You can kill us, set us on fire, skin us, beat us and rape us, but you can never stop Duke Nukem Forever. You can drown us in shitty games with emo mutes that trapse around not having sex with anything or even being ballsy enough to saw anything or flood us with generic suit wearing gimps that fight partially inflated trash bags on mars and we will never stop. Duke Nukem Forever is coming. Mortal men may not craft him, gods might not live long enough to play him, the very universe itself may fold under his might, but he will come and there will not be a toilet big enough to park his bricks in.
You can all dance around in your ignorance, your pithy idea that mere financial mechanisms of mere men can stop him. That simply because nobody is there to craft the one true creator, the he cannot rise from his own rest is reason to assume he will never return is pure lunacy. Duke Nukem Forever is Forever. He is before, he is after and he is during, forever. Mock all you want, you could never really grasp the idea of what forever is, let along what duke himself is and you never will."

Tried a bunch of stuff lately.
Bikini Bottom Massacre is a funny concept and Spongebob themed graphics work surpisingly well with Doom engine but i didn't like the WAD itself.
Maybe it's only an UV issue but the author is way too stingy with ammo during the later levels considering the amount of HP sponges(huh) being thrown at you.

It was kind of hard to tell where to go. It is kind of neat to be able to go wherever you like from the start, but I'd rather have say half the area be blocked off and find a way to get around it (say, rooftops) than just free roaming, especially without conveniences like automap or compass.

Kinda wished there was a big gun shop that had a good assortment of gear that you could puzzle your way into early on and get enough stuff to deal with the various encounters. I couldn't find any secrets. Ammo was tight. Battles and exploring didn't feel super interesting. It did feel like wandering around a city block, but... if there were interesting sights and fights to find I just couldnt come across them.

And I also started Ion Fury Aftershock finally. It's really good so far, I am liking the new power-ups and it's more fun than just finding some shitty radar. I'm a little worried tho' because the percentage of people getting even the initial progression trophies is pretty low but maybe it's because AfterShock integrates to the base game idk. Third level of Curse of DSparil is very solid too. I spent some time in "where the hell should I go now" mode, but in general progression was really natural. Just tried Lumoria for Halo 1. The voice acting and that attempt at a story are pretty cringe, but the levels and combat encounters are about as top-tier as Halo 1 can get. Some of the vehicle sections end a bit abruptly, but otherwise they're great.
I guess mapping for Halo must be pretty hard since you rarely see singleplayer stuff that isn't an attempt to overhaul the vanilla campaign, and most of what you do get is very jank.

When it comes to Quake 1 you're better off loading the BSP into Trenchbroom as a model (via misc_model or an equivalent entity) and using it as an overlay to remake stuff by hand. It's an ancient, cheap tablet that's no longer sold or driver supported, but imo you can get just about anything thats twenty or thirty US$ and it should be able to do anything this thing can.

Also if you're just starting, dont worry about being hyper accurate and detailed, just draw simple shapes, cartoony eyes and basic proportions and shapes. Once you get used to blasting out a figure that doesnt look like a hideous orangutang with anime hair focus on improving things bit by bit. If you fuck up don't bother with erasers, just start a new sketch.

Even better is to sometimes grab a ballpoint pen and sketch out on junk mail envelopes, scratch paper, amazon boxes. Try different pens, papers, and even drawing programs. I keep MyPaint 1.0.0 because it's very lightweight and lets me quickly save a sketch as a scrap and I can come back to it later if I feel like it.

A few related questions if some helpful lad could chime in...
Is Ironwail pretty much the total successor to Quakespasm?
Arcane Dimensions recommended a custom altered version of Quakespasm to support some new features (rain, I think, and increased entity counts). Is Ironwail compatible with all this?

Yes, and a custom version is included for Mjolnir, the next big Quake mod like AD. But QS gets updated on occasion and Ironwail is still missing certain features relative to AD

>I’m also a different anon and kinda like the Aftershock menu.
I like the art itself, but was honestly quite bummed that they didn't get something closer to the original. You know, something that would feel like made for the game specifically and not just the key art transported into it. Although I believe that the main menu art was done in similar manner.

Best way to find out your preference is to find an artist friend that has some tools you can demo, or maybe see if an Apple Store or someplace has a iPad with a Pencil you can try out and see how it feels. Usually stuff like screen tablets, those are more expensive options for professionals or dedicated amateurs willing to downsize their keyboard and install desk arms though.

Size is another preference thing, I get by with a smaller tablet but not everyone draws the same way, bigger maybe better but it also takes more space.

And yeah nothin beats spending two bucks on cheap paper or notepads or zero dollars on scrap paper and just going ham. Even if you get bored you don’t lose much.

Between current year brainrot and there literally being organizations that 'invest' in your studio for doing various forms of expectation subverting. It's also kinda just a social/political shit test in the indie sphere to make your game have a female protagonist who is black or otherwise intentionally unattractive.

>If you think games need more women, or minorities, or LGBT, or whatever, that's great!
Minority representation and the aggressive "deconstruction" of heteronormativity are both so fucking artificially overexposed that there is an objective need for less.

People who have a pathological hatred for their target audiences are writing and designing characters according to DEI checklists as a primary goal (similar for writing stories), and it creates this extremely fucked and unnatural cultural environment, where blunt and aggressive corporate oversaturation is breeding a strongly growing counter culture which breeds stronger and stronger resentment and divides, divides which were absolutely tiny just twenty years ago.
You know what the trans discourse was 20 years ago? Almost completely invisible to the vast majority of the world, while today transphobia is more common than ever before, and it's basically becoming fashionable.

The soup has become brine, yet you're entertaining how to best add even more salt, and there is no going back from this. At this rate, the overcorrection which is going to result from the past 12 years of cultural manipulation and multibillionaire funded tastemaking is going to be so unbelievably fucking ugly and vile that it'll defy your wildest nightmares, and people like you will have thoughtlessly contributed to it.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some but : I enjoy a good action chick that's sexy and also badass. I would say that for example Shelly from Ion Fury is quite attractive and invigorates the imagination of course her design or the base of it at least comes from Bombshell but I think she's good enough for a good action romp with cheesy lines and a little innuendo.

Though if I were in charge of a Shellyverse i.p I would take it a third person slasher / shooter and increase the level of erotic violence a lot. More tentacles and more gnarly rapey mutants with close encounter-attacks that make Shelly ragdoll and thrash around helplessly but you can still move limbs to kick while on the ground etc. I will save Shellyverse I will!

Also on topic of Ion Fury : I feel like the game is pretty good for the most part but the audio cues / shouts from the enemies and the music don't go hard enough. I feel like the music for example is competent but too ''low key''. The main menu theme is good but what I wanted from the music was something like what Civvie11 said Duke's music was ''fitting for Verhoeven-esque brutal urban combat''. It's not faux-1980s sci-fi slaughter combat it's amicable beats to do homework to.

I am leaving 1 or 2 guns with infinite ammo and play the whole level with it. It is fun to snipe fast-enabled Nitrogolems from afar. And even more fun to shoot Disciples and Sabreclaws with Cuban KS-23 shotgun, that was intended for anti-gov protesters, and see how they are stunned in nervous anti-crowd gas clouds (this works surprisingly well with vanilla Heretic).

Seems like a "while the iron is hot" deal.

Hardware limitations and all, not like they were in an enviable position to make those choices, and they do the most they can to make up for it, with a pretty damn good game as a result, but one always wonders what Doom 64 could have been like if the N64 could had just a bit more memory and used a more flexible and roomy medium.

Same, but the reality is that you need to embrace that you will likely only produce terrible mangled abominations for a while but the only way to really improve is grinding it out consistently. I noticed that I improved a lot when I was wfh and doodling during 'dead air' but when I became a NEET again I had trouble keeping myself consistent. Sometimes the more free time you have makes you less productive and you have to struggle to keep to a schedule especially since when you're starting out in drawing the disparity between the image you visualize in your head and the outcome of the drawing is going to make you feel despaired and produce a feeling that makes you not want to draw again if that makes sense.

A couple threads ago someone asked if you could fake colored light using transparent midtextures which prompted me to do this. Each color has an equivalent transparency and color map. Anyone who's had the pleasure of observing light in the real world can probably tell that this is not an accurate imitation. Standing beneath a colored light doesn't ordinarily colorize the entire world beyond it, so it's more like colored liquid. It's still the best I can think of using this technology.
Since custom transparency is applied in the order of overlapping textures (like you'd expect) but on top of custom colormaps, there's a discrepancy between looking through and standing within a beam when you can see multiple colors. I designed red and blue maps to ignore any similar overlap by translating any resultant color to the original mapping, i.e. there is no change for these special entries. I think this method would be impossible for the negative map since every entry is completely different from the original. This means I can't put front and back midtextures on a negative beam which degrades the effect somewhat when straddling the borders. The double negative effect looks cool though.
You can try the map here (complevel 9+, needs software renderer):

Massively reductive, Doom's soundtrack ranges between rock and metal to moody tension themes. Sinister and They Are Going To Get You are strong melodic tracks which provide good oppressive atmospheres for their levels in ways which Aubrey Hodges' random smatterings of ambient noise mostly fails to deliver. In case you've somehow been stuck with dinky OPL3 emulation, or the mediocre default synth in Windows, listen to the tracks with an SC-55.sf2 to get a proper feel for them.

I love Doom 64, but it badly needed the touch of someone such as Bobby Prince or Lee Jackson to provide some genuine character with actual music. It's not like Hodges couldn't either, the title sequence and score screen both have great examples of what he should have been doing for the rest of the game.

How much of a putrid scumbag am I if I'd legit wish for an update to TTYCD which replaces the DoomGuy's statusbar face gfx with Bruce Willis?

Newbie who was having trouble talking to NPCs in ashes here. Got it to work. Don't need *both* the enriched .pk3 and the original .wad to play the patched version.

I would say that the difference is very substantial. Here's how they sound in OPL3

And here's with a genuine SC-55 device (no emulation, though good emulation is easy):

iD asked for metal and rock based music, Romero really wanted it to sound as close as possible, so that's what he gave them, but most of it is pretty transformative if you actually compare them, often imitating a specific riff and then building a new track from that. The Demons From Adrian's Pen is derivative of Metallica's The Call Of Ktulu, but that one is probably the most subtle derivatives in the bunch.

Bobby Prince's more original work gets overshadowed by this (and he also reused a few leftover tracks for Blake Stone), which is a shame because his truly original work is quite good. This includes some of the best tracks in Duke Nukem 3D, and a number of mostly overlooked games like Abuse, Black Knight, and Demonstar.

You're going to waste your money on Phantom Fury? It's quite undercooked and pretty ass due to how insanely rushed it turned out to be.

I finished Doom 64 last night for the first time, loved the punchy weapons.

I'm now considering Doom 3. I somehow have both vanilla and BFG on Steam. What's the best argument you can give for which version i should play?

>> No.10980931

>>10980851
Vanilla Doom 3 is spookier, has more minigames, has a hell zombie enemy that BFG cuts out, and has more mods.
BFG gives you more ammo, looks better, is more stable on modern OSs
