ZBL-NAI was able to get a 2-ALL only a year after the game came out, but he's pretty godlike anyway. He was able to get 700M or so as well, so that shows you can get a pretty high score, even with C-S.

Anyway, there is something weird with 360 cave games. In Daifukkatsu there is difficulty option (I think) I'm going to Rank 4 and there is no change in patterns or number of bullets. In Futari there is no difficulty option, you know in PCB version there is something like Very Hard.

Oblivion can be completely broken by staying at level. Summoning a Daedroth against level 1 foes is hilarious. He just smacks them down in one hit.

It's not that it makes the difficulty easy, it's that it is in lock-step with your level, and there's no real surprises or out-of-depth encounters, and that all the random bums come with Glass/Daedric at higher levels. Morrowind didn't go random enough: Once you know where the Daedric Dai-katana is you're set. Daggerfall is pretty alright except for how common Daedric gets at higher levels, and that Luck affects item drops.

First of all, the ! isn't in any Gradius game except for 3.

Second of all, the rank in Gradius games is so much less obscure, if you don't want to make the game harder, just limit the amount of options you get.

Hell, I completed some Gradius games with a fully powered up ship and the rank wasn't even that noticeable (it's only really noticeable if you get 4 options and the option hunter spawns).

Good design is rewarding the use of available resources and increasing challenge and reward through their management.

So yes the death mechanic in raizing games is good design as it increases complexity by adding an extra resource to be managed and also acts as a way to naturally scale difficulty.

Bad design is penalizing use of bombs and having a scoring run end when you die or w/e.

Game design that assumed the player lives in a bubble and never interacts with other people would force you to make a very boring game.

When you enter a credit in a street fighter machine and go get your ass handed to you in the arcade you ask around, watch other people play, maybe go buy a gaming magazine and try to figure things out yourself. You don't just sit there and continue to feed credits (some people do I'm sure). It's the same with the best shmups too.

Players are expected to make some effort on their behalf to understand the mechanics and idiosyncrasies of the game as is the case with all of the best video games like the streetfighter series or quake3 arena.

Please, that wording makes it sound as if good players randomly die for no reason and the machine cheats them.

Good players _choose_ to die because the system encourages and rewards strategic suicides.

You can complete garegga without dying if you really want but no one does that because it's boring and the system does not promote boring play.

Increasing difficulty is at the core of all good arcade games, in the case of garegga it's programmed into the game as well in the form of rank.
