>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/Retroid official websites

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but $100-200 range), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality, avoid the RG Nano), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 300$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- RG556 (180$, horizontal, 5.8" 16:9 OLED Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30/RGB20SX (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (50$, vertical, 4:3 screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Hey, I've asked this before, but I got an electronics lecture and my brain burned out. Looking on google and other places they are not very specific with the GBP mod either.

So... if I install the IPS mod I lose the Possibility to use flash-cards correct? There is no way to use something along the lines of generic gameboy AC charger+IPS mod+flash card ? I really don't want to do any soldering.
I bought this one with a slightly damaged screen and ironically Aliexpress does not sell non-IPS replacements so I will have to settle for GB bootlegs....

The guy running the Github for the firmware thinks they're going to do a DMG/Pocket revision first before they go to GBA. They are selling new GBA motherboards, you just need to source the motherboard and RAM so they're almost there. I'd hold out on any first revision though, the 1.1(1) revisions added some more compatibility for the FPGBC and they're really bad on supporting the thing via the firmware. It's been two months and no new firmware updates despite blowing them out for the first two or three months.

Retroid pocket 4 pro would have been close to endgame if the screen wasn't so fucked.
Convenient that they stopped selling the 3+, which is still the best handheld for everything up to Dreamcast.
That being said, anyone have a 2s metal edition? Does it have sharp corners and stuff?
Do the unisoc chips have enough power to run the x86 emulators? Toohoo and such would be cool to have on a handheld.

Depends if they make the firmware open source or not, assuming they stop working on the firmware itself. Recently nuked the Android installation on the eMMC of my RG353P, it's an early model.
This was to get a ROCKNIX installation bootable from microSD TF slot 1.

Any anons know if it's possible to install the ROCKNIX CFW directly to the eMMC so it boots from there instead?
It'd be preferable due to how the bootloader for Linux now apparently prioritises the internal storage for booting.

To wipe it before I had to run Linux Terminal commands over SSH using WinSCP.
I need to identify the data source (TF1) and the data destination (eMMC), I tried running lsblk but it returns command not found, so I'm guessing that command just isn't present in the ROCKNIX Linux distribution.

The difference is that one requires a surface to be used properly whereas a handheld doesn't. You can't thumb type on one of those. The maidphone however would count as a handheld even without the game controls over the keyboard.

I literally use this grip case for my Switch because that heft around the sides makes it a million times better to use. I think there's other aspects to want an android handheld, like the screen typically being in a 4:3 or 16:9 Aspect Ratio. From what I hear most phones ship with a 21:9 ratio or something, meaning the black bars are more noticeable on both sides of the screen.
But beyond that, it's still Android. Installing and playing games with Daijisho, RetroArch, Duckstation, PPSSPP should be the same. Give it a try first to see if you're perfectly fine with what you have, or if you want to spend more for a dedicated handheld.

Clearly it's not ergonomic because grips and cases exist for it just like the Switch. Or perhaps you are now saying just because these products exist doesn't actually determine whether something is ergonomic?

>> No.10957910

>>10957902
Why are you strawmanning? The argument was that something that is the size of the Deck cannot possibly be ergonomic. My experience and the fact that there are popular products that make the Switch the exact same size as the Deck disprove that "something that is the size of the Deck cannot possibly be ergonomic". That is all.

The original problem was that the battery was so close and exposed to the main circuit chip that runs the device. Both will become very hot on their own, let alone so close to each other.

Copper is a fantastic conductor, especially when it comes to temperatures. This is placing the same piece of copper directly against the battery and the CPU, so all heat from either just builds up in the copper until it either fries the CPU which kills the entire fucking unit, or it explodes the battery, killing you Final Destination style.

However, stop being such an obtuse little faggot about this. You know damn well that in a discussion about one product (the Deck) compared to another (the Switch) that any qualitative statements about one is in comparison to the other. It's implied. If some people find it more comfortable to get accessories and controllers for the Switch to match the Deck's ergonomics because they are more comfortable than the Switch's are normally, then the Switch isn't as ergonomic as the Deck is. But typing all that out sounded condescending and retarded, so to be pragmatic, a nigga's just going to say "Switch isn't ergonomic" with it in comparison to the Deck, because that was the current discussion, 'eck and 'itch comfortability due to size.

Saying it isn't ergonomic compared to the Deck is not saying it isn't ergonomic at all. Stop this obtuse faggotry that only period people and flamboyant dragqueens do.

Size literally doesn't matter as long as the weight and actual ergonomics of how you hold it are both comfortable. As a device becomes larger, it needs more dedicated grips for your hands. This is why the Joycons are acceptable for their shape; because of their size, they're easier to wrap your fingers around them so they don't need as detailed grips. The Wii U gamepad though, holy fuck what a piece of shit. The scale of everything on it makes the entire thing feel bigger than it actually is and the grooves on the back to rest your fingers are so fucking terrible for holding onto a device of its size. God, the Wii U truly was worse than FisherPrice tier. Vtech and Leapfrog are doing insane things with their toddler electronic toys these days that Nintendo should unironically be taking notes from.

I did this with my Samsung Galaxy M30, so a way weaker smartphone than the A52 you've got, it's a shame since PS2 is really tough to emulate, but PSP still works fine... other systems like N64 and Saturn also give me trouble, but Dreamcast and PS1 do well, I imagine that with the A52 it's be a lot smoother. I think it's still valid to go for one of these dedicated handhelds if you want still.

I mean, a lot of people like them thanks to their novelty and charm alone, the form factor and the aesthetic... but function? A smartphone is just as good, as long as you use a good controller for it.

you should be buying every device with an understanding/acceptance of its performance then and there, this goes for everything

hell the rp3 even came with the dome switches board for abxy whereas the rp3+ went with the membrane ones only

and not to sound like a stan but by chinkheld standards they handled the rp4 trigger thing far better than they reasonably needed to, the cost for the replacements are more than fair and they comp'd them for early orders anyway; contrast that with the radio silence from anbernig on any and all of their shithelds

I let my GF borrow my Bluetooth controller for her iPhone 11... and that Lightning port isn't an issue. If you're still skeptical of Bluetooth ones, get a cheaper one to try out since it avoid all of this port issue, while working reasonably well to play anything you want, at least in my experience with it. I'm sure the Backbone, and a few others, had Lightning too... maybe you can find it used.

I'd rather get a Game Console R50S or Anbernic RG 503 or Powkiddy RGB 30 instead of that phone control scheme.

I mean, most of these controllers are asymmetrical in their layout, the only symmetrical ones I've found go for a Wii U styled layout like this one... it's not ideal, but it works a lot better for 2D than asymmetrical at least.

>>10961041
Fair.

>>10961065
I know it doesn't look too comfortable, but it actually feels quite good in the hands for such a compact and cheap controller, with nice buttons.
