That's been my experience with most of this retro-alike stuff, they don't end up measuring up to mods by somebody with either the heart, talent or both to pull it off so instead they go down the nostalgia marketing route.

It's especially damning when their sales page has to list a ton of 90s/2000s FPS games that they hope you irrationally associate with their game.

I feel like Robert D'Niro in Goodfellas, this fucking executioner enemy in Wrath - big guy with a mask covering his face and giant blades for hands - charged at me so I got away from him and dealt with some other enemies. Mop em up, ready the railgun for him, and he's just gone. I don't know where the fuck he could have possibly gone to, but he's vanished. Poor fuck.

Next time you play these include a short description for all of them. We have no idea what your taste is like in general or what particularly annoyed you which is the most important takeaway.

As far as I'm concerned, I feel like the 'retro' gimmick is a bit of a crutch for middling developers similar to parody soulslikes : if you can't make a competent product then sell it as parody or retro to comp for mediocrity.

That said however there are always some good ones in the bunch here and there which makes it worth it. Similar to dumpster diving old ps2 games from the bargain bin sometimes you find shit, sometimes it's bad shit, boring shit [worst] or interesting, deeply flawed but a flavorgul game.

The issue is starting to be when all the indies are starting to get infected with the same bland safespace bs which causes a lot of the flavor to be sucked out in favor of appeasing californioid sensibilities.

I'm kind of in a middle space where I enjoy a bunch of those retro inspired shootas, dislike some and think that others are highly mediocre.

But that's honestly how it was back in those shooters' days too. It wasn't like everyone liked the same stuff, those games were expensive-ish and you'd have to be reasonably loaded to play all of them. Some games that are palatable today because you got them for 5-10 buckaroos from a Steam / GoG sale were full priced back in the day like imagine committing to Blood 2 for the ''1 game every 6 months'' purchase? Stings.

The magic of the internet allows me to better filter out the shit that's mid and keep to the good ones.

>> No.10959749

>>10959715
I guess that's fair, there's very few games, indie or otherwise, that are as good as some things people make for free as Doom and Quake mods, but I guess I'm very easily entertained even by things that aren't.
That reinforce my theory that it's probably better to make a game as a free gameplay mod first then expand upon it afterwards.
>>10959726
Oh, I'm not stopping, and certainly not expecting everyone to like what I make. I just hope I can make something people like as much as, let's say, Rekkr.

Episode 3 of Wolf 3D so much better then the first two, the map design is just so much better, Romero's maps are the better one but Hall's maps have also improved, a masterpiece.

>> No.10959820

>>10959774
About the only grievance I can take with Episode 3 are the couple of signature Tom Hall mazes, luckily they're both optional. Brace yourself for a quality drop in Episode 4, it's all Tom and he gets a bit experimental, exploring ideas approaching prototype slaughter and monster closets. Episode 5 is all Romero and I'd say it's the best official id content for the game. 6 is a real shitshow with some wretched maps from Tom and even Bobby Prince, but it also has a top tier Romero map in the middle. If you care to move on to Spear after that, its quality is relatively consistent and around high Episode 1 to low Episode 3 tier, but all the maps are huge, there's sadly nothing like Romero's super lean Episode 3 and 5 maps in it.

That's good. Keep the balance with this. Every person has an opinion and many won't share your perspective on said games, which is totally fine and don't let that get to you. At the same time, it's no excuse to dismiss proper argument and critics just because you don't like them.

Doom having decades of maps over many indie FPS, on top of mods that can alter the game to taste just enough without fucking with too much else doesn't really help, it's all competition too. Quality maps to go with a tried and true lineup of weapons and monsters is hard to beat, even with largely basic movement by design. Trying to unify a lot of elements cohesively - weapons, enemies, pickups and maps, admittedly isn't very easy either.

The state of throwback shooters is always going to be a mixed and very subjective bag, and personal tastes aside - you can only really sieve out the truly bad ones otherwise. Will say it's a little sad when those with a level editor available will also generally never get much content made for them, but it's not unexpected.

Phantom Fury is trying to be more of a half-like than a boomer shooter imo, they're trying to focus more on linear level design, storytelling, rather than being extremely fast paced and having maze-like level design with little to no story.

But despite Phantom Fury qualifying as a half-like rather than a boomer shooter, it's still a very shitty game with extremely broken and buggy design, they could've at least delayed it to the end of 2024, but who am I kidding? Shitgate Ironworks is known for creating buggy mediocre titles, it was expected.

I'm partial to the huge 15-20 minute levels at the end of Episode 6 and in Spear of Destiny, but Episode 3's definitely had a focused vision of being short enough to keep even the most loosely interested player motivated to get to and experience the boss fight. In general, I like the levels that tried to deliver a unique challenge despite the limited weapon and enemy roster. For example, the officers behind the pillars at the start of E3F6 where you have to focus on cutting down a few before repositioning them into a more favorable bottleneck. E6F6 where everyone wakes up after one shot and you have to really concentrate for a couple minutes is another standout. There's the proto-stealth mission where you follow the blood splatters. There's all the rudimentary traps like the white stone room in E2F6. It feels by the end of Spear of Destiny that they'd exhausted just about every trick they could've pulled on the player to kill them with what they had, like stuffing one (or nine) enemies in the exit elevator, which got really overused to the point where you'll start instinctively pre-firing every time while thinking, "nope, still not gonna get me with that".
It's an incredibly soulful game for me for that reason because of how simple Wolfenstein is mechanically, and yet you can pinpoint so many examples where they're still coming up with creative ways to punish the player that would later be polished to a shine with better technology.

I kinda want a map set where we imitate 90s user maps. Not the good ones that set standards, but the average joes bullshit map with big ideas but somewhat poor execution or imperfect design. Low detail recreations of real world locations using almost only stock textures. Illogical placement of poorly palettes scantily clad women. MSpaint-esque enemy/weapon alterations...

For me, it's one of those cases where I would really need to playthrough the entire thing myself before actually making up my mind. Usually you can just look at a couple of gameplay video (not necessarily reviews or whatever opinion pieces) to get a general idea of what you think the game is and how you're going to vibe with it.
In case of Phantom Fury, I'm feeling lost and confused. There's something in there and that said thing is fine as far as I can tell, but all the usual schizophrenia that's been following 3D Realms for the last like 15+ years of its existence seem to really warp my perception of reality whenever they enter the picture in some major way.
No way I'm saying it's flawless a-okay game. Just feel like I'm stuck in a circus at a psych ward. Either way, I'm giving them a + for trashtalking YouTubers in their private server. Even though I'm sure that all of developers in that side of industry talk about them in this way behind the scenes, it was a fun read thanks to some salty retard who was stupid enough to not stay anonymous.

>There's not that much to go off, sadly. UnderTheMayo is a clown and ZlimBratSki with unnamed YouTuber being idiots.
>"There’s more to share but that’s enough for now."
>Now ex-community manager of 3D Realms ended up replying with usual "comments don't represent the company's views" and "sharing these screenshots violates company's privacy & NDA".

As far as I heard, some YouTubers have (naturally) milked this situation for clout since shitting on 3DR just kept getting more and more popular. It's also worth noting that Rekkimaru (the leaker) has been looking for job for a while now, been dealing with financial issues and worked on his own game.
This stunt surely will "help" him with all that.

This is what I was wondering too. Did they just fail to gib the boom shoot reviewers their required 30 shekels or something? There is stuff that is far more generic gzdoom boomer shooter nonsense that is getting better previews/reviews which threw me off. A half like even with a ton of issues should have breezed right through just on the novelty of not being another wise cracking generic trend chasing 'insincere' boom shoot.

>According to a new report, it seems like the next big Doom game from Id Software and Bethesda will be announced soon. But it sounds like this next entry in the popular FPS franchise won’t be a traditional sequel, but instead, possibly a prequel showing the origins of the series’ main character, the Doomslayer.
Cool. They shat the bed with the whole slayer concept halfway through Eternal, but it makes money so now they're going in reverse to milk it with a prequel that will definitely not suck eggs as well. Remember that blurb in the original manual about the protagonist being some random no name doing moon duty as punishment? Now he'll be some epic vaguely-European pastiche fighting ancient deities and whatever other cliches they decide to throw in the blender.

>Insider Gaming says that last year it heard “early details” about the still-unconfirmed game and was told that it’s set in a “medieval-inspired Doom world.” The outlet suggests that the previous codename of “Year Zero” and the “Dark Ages” title, along with the mention of medieval inspiration
You know, id owns another IP that would fit the dark medieval concept better, but at this point I think Quake's better off left in history.

Art being the hot button aspect, which includes videogames, I foresee AI stuff as being a way to do things on a relatively tiny budget (and also for conjuring up quick placeholders before committing to a concept), but that this will be fairly widely recognized, and largely regarded as cheap, thus not particularly desirable.

>A half like even with a ton of issues should have breezed right through just on the novelty of not being another wise cracking generic trend chasing 'insincere' boom shoot.
You can actually get some of that if you dig a bit deeper. I've seen some smaller channels and normal players having an attitude similar to that.

Revenants may be intimidating if you try to dodge away from their projectiles like most other monsters, but if you shed your fear and move towards them more aggressively, the limited turning speed of their homing rockets becomes much more exploitable.
Damaging floors hurt you at the same rate the weapon sways left and right while you're running, you can use this to minimize or even avoid floor damage completely.
You can easily dodge Imps, Cacos, and Nobles by ear. If you know the general direction of these commonly-spammed enemies in a large area, just listen for the sound and you don't have to move more than a tap to dodge each projectile while focusing on something else.

Since you're pistol starting, an important thing to do in maps that don't give you proper weapons is to run past big enemies, to get better weapons to kill them more efficiently.
If you're playing with infinite height, there's a fun trick you can do with rockets by shooting at walls above/below them to hurt them with the infinitely tall splash damage
Rockets are very inefficient at killing cybers and masterminds due to their immunity to splash damage. SSG and cell weapons deal full damage and should be used instead.
To deal full damage with the BFG you need to be very aggressive; when the balls impact (lol), the enemies need to be in your view, and the closer they are the more damage they receive.

Almost done with Quake 2's Call of the Machine and I really really enjoy it, so glad I didn't leave Quake 2 64 out of all things to be the last official part I play of the Remaster. I also like that it's a collection of ''shorter'' episodes than 1 really long quest because when you start again with just a blaster and have to rebuild the arsenal there's a lot more satisfaction to gearing up again and you have to play with the earlygame weapons as well. Very detailed, very high quality, good usage of assets and enies from the expansions packs too.

I'm playing Quake on Steam. Apparently it's a remaster. The gameplay is fun enough, and Quake is one of the oldest games I can find that I can have some fun playing. The remaster looks much better than the original, and maybe someday I'll play the original, but not now. I said I'm having some fun with it, but I'm not having a lot of fun. It's fine I guess, and it's an absolute classic. It's great, actually, and I'm not regretting the time I spend on it.

you've given me an idea for a partial conversion/doom campaign - trading weapons made me think of cave story where you have a limited arsenal and sometimes can trade one weapon for another at limited occasions or give two to someone to craft a new one, you could trade bfg for something else much more powerful at the time, but if you hold your horses and wait you can get something even better.
I'd have to use Zdoom family ports to make this but it could be a cool hub based hexen/strifelike megawad where you'd explore a large location and unlock weapons on the way
Grinding EXP for dmg would be stupid and make balancing encounters not fun - I'd opt for something like Julius Mode in Aria of Sorrow where you just get a boost in stats for each boss(or some other milestone) you pass, and then sort monsters into loose tiers so you'd feel the boost. I'd make every enemy encounter in two variations:
>One when you visit that place for the first time
>Second reduced for every time you come back
This way I'd avoid the trap of Powerslave/Hexen where it's so tedious to backtrack - additionally the stat boosts will make dealing with backtracking quicker

Gonna be real, that shit is just fucking torture. Maybe you don't give it on the first level, but Jesus the Pistol in Doom is so "dry," it's so unsatisfying and dull to use that I don't think there's very much excuse to make the player have to use it for any extended duration.

The Chaingun isn't exactly a superweapon or anything, it's a chore of a gun to use for any monster more sturdy than a Pinky, but it's generally practical for all the low level foes. Please just give the player a Chaingun if you intend to have him use bullet ammo, for fun's sake.

Yeah I think I might do something like that but they go in a sort of parabolic arc above the player's head, then all go down together after a delay like a flashy mecha effect. I think I can achieve this even without reload by just waiting till the player finally stops firing for a delay. Great anons think alike though, ty.

What do you think about chanced cursed mods that are applied either from the start or over time forcibly? These mods would work antagonistically to most of the simple mods.
Also considering something similar to that where the mods offer big penalties for big rewards, to change weapons behavior significantly. Already have one that does return damage to the player for a big bonus in damage, but thinking about more in that vein.

Just finished Quake 2 Call of the Machine today. It was really good Quake 2 content. A lot of kinda ''slaughtery'' sections with a bit questionable monster placement but most of those levels were really good. The bossfights were also pretty well choreographed and had healthbars which was a welcome change.

Definitely recommending anons give COTM a shot if you haven't already. Each of the 'episodes' is nicely bite-sized so you can do 1 or 2 in an evening pretty conveniently.

Ok, I definitely misremembered about ep3 in Heretic, DSparil fight at the end of it was well familiar, and it is an example of better FPS boss fights. Ep4 is a different thing though, playing it on 3rd difficulty, and it strongly reminds of lower levels of Diablo1. Squarish symmetrical rooms with complete lack of even imaginary purpose (really shows how good was ep1) and massive amount of strong enemies. Fighting 3 Iron Liches in a small room is no joke. What I don't understand, how did people play ep4 without Guncaster and infinite ammo, do they really fight Maulotaurs with a wand?

Guncaster theme is cringe (or what zoomers now call such stuff), but pistol and SSG there are really good. And making the recoil and effects configurable was a very good choice. I tried a few gun mods before choosing this pistol+SSG. Actually liked the mechanical shotgun from REKKR standalone gunset (lostviking.pk3), but default damage there appeared to be too low for Heretic, and no easy way to up it without digging the scripts.

is it wrong to look up where the secrets in any given map are? i try to look for them on my own but sometimes i just end up mashing e on every surface and still don't find anything.

there was no situation in normal gameplay where you could enter a later map without the weapons from the maps before it, because the game just loads an autosave on death unlike doom
they made a couple of the e1 maps shotgun start friendly and i believe it was for the sole purpose of demo recording on those maps

Yes, but Quake will give you ammo for weapons which you carried over from previous levels, that's the expectation, that you already have them from before.
Ergo you will find rockets which you need, but you won't find the actual weapons but in the given levels they were placed in. Have fun grinding through most of the episode with just the Shotgun and not actually enough ammo to get that done.

Doom is instead designed around the expectation that any level could be started from a blank slate, thus levels get designed with that in mind and you would typically always find the stuff which the designer figures you'll need.

This City of Lost Children map - e2 of Curse of D'Sparil - it really grows on me. Perhaps the best Heretic map I've ever played. Replayed it 2 more times, no need to go over the first difficulty, when it already gives you 233 kills. Revolver (from Half-Life) gives a perfect Gunslinger experience, when you can one-shot an Imp and two-shot flying caped guys. Battle with 2 Iron Litches appeared to be perfectly balanced for this setup. And sniping waves of Imps on the grey clouds were nice. Need to find 5 more secrets there.

I'm working on him right now, kinda. I'm in the process of flipping the table on how he works. Not proud of that but I guess now's a good time to be an indecisive asshole about it rather than AFTER releasing the revised character. I wasn't happy with how slow he was to consume ammo and how little heat interacted with his weaponry. So I'm stealing some notes from Blaster Master Zero 3 and doing some other shit.

How the fuck did you* I'm sorry, I'm just a little flabbergasted right now. Well fuck it I may as well go into greater detail about the new plan with a summary:
Gonna remove charge attacks and reloading. Just gonna have two main meters: Core and gun. Core goes up while fighting and is used for super kicks and subweapons. Gun meter is for shooting, build that up from fighting in melee or picking up ammo gems, I might make some gems build heat too, though that might be annoying.

As core goes up, the gun and baton will get progressively stronger, which also increases how much ammo the gun uses. Overheat and you're stuck in a mode where you're stuck with a hot club that slings fire until you vent it off either from clubbing/kicking shit. Bottom the gun meter out? Then you're stuck with a mode where you have a club that outputs a short ranged wave that'll parry projectiles, club/kick shit until that hits 100 and you reset the gauge.

>They can make use of their credit by making new games that don't suck.
Oh yeah, I totally agree with that. I do think that crediting is important (especially nowadays with more stories of mishaps on that front, but that's modern releases). Remember what each person did specifically when they were part of company that developed the game, but don't let that cloud your judgement when it comes to something new being done by said person. Like, don't say that "Daikatana isn't that bad" just because nowadays Romero seems decent. Nothing wrong with liking flawed games, but don't overlooked said flaws to fit in.
>grifting
I worry less about grifting (as long as it doesn't rewrite history and not too egregious) and more about them being toxic assholes entitled to success like John St. John. Just don't pretend that "you care about your legacy". It's just a monetary asset for you.

Because the "OG people left" requirement is as vague as current definitions of remasters and re-releases, which only feeds into aforementioned trend.

All powered by ego and entitlement to fame for past success in spite of all the failures that followed with no new & worthwhile projects to show for in recent years.
