There is atleast one on Famicom, but i forget the name. Think it was from Tecmo.

If you go through a catalog of euroshmups you will find a lot of games like this, although this structure of game correlates strongly with awful gameplay

Star Control II on DOS is pretty much what you're describing, it also happens to be one of the best games ever made.

Guardian Legend. You play a cute robot gril who can also turn into a fighter jet for shooter stages.

most abandonware websites should have it. It was shareware but you can still get the whole thing. This website lets you play it in the browser, seems to work fine when I just tried it then

ACTUALLY i prefer Starflight 2 combat.... if only because the fake variety of ships in SF2 was pointless. only like 2 or 3 ships were useful, other than the main customisable ship. AND the main ship becomes useless in the final battle because it get loaded up with a giant BOMB!

I have not played that game. In melee, that's why my cousins and I kept choosing random and made the best of the situation the RNG put us in. Sure there are bad matchups, but with clever play and maybe some random field hazard assists, some damage could still be done for the next ship in line. As for the story, I thought that's how the Pkunk mystically knew to give you exactly 4 of their ships to take down the shielding and elude its defenses.

OP, this is most likley a game I've been looking for at least 20 years since I've played it once on my neighbour's kid PC.
Is one of the later-wave enemies a big red ball with a grey/white cross on it that divides into 4 smaller balls when you shoot it by any chance?

>Is one of the later-wave enemies a big red ball with a grey/white cross on it that divides into 4 smaller balls when you shoot it by any chance?
I never made it to the end of the game. It doesn't really sound like something that would be in there though, but maybe it is. I've had a quick look at some longplays before and didn't really see anything like that. The game is only about an hour long if you know where to go. I remember one of the problems I had was that it's pretty easy to get lost. If you write down the coordinates people give you it's not as bad.

>Isn't this just 2D Elite?
Not really, it's not as complicated. Back in the old days it probably would have been called an Adventure game because it's kind of similar to the old sierra quest games in a way. WIkipedia calls it a top-down, space-themed role-playing action game
>What does that have to do with metroidvanias?
It has backtracking and looking for things and action, "search action" you could say, and you become more powerful as the game goes on. Instead of fighting people close-range though you're shooting them sort of like a shoot 'em up

yeah was a lot more fun in the 90s, maybe because it didn't have much else to play at the time. Now it's kind of tedious. Still fun for a little bit though

I'll go see a longplay to confirm this then, because I don't think the minimap was on that corner in the game I am looking for.

the Genesis version is worse due to absurd drain on Endurium/Fuel when landing/taking off a planet, and when shooting any weapon in combat. it was also suppose to use less fuel during hyperflight thru space, but they screwed that up too.

No, there was one that was like a looping stage set up that required figuring secrets out to progress to later areas. Like Milons Secret Castle but a shooter.
