Is it cheating to use pause to react to boss attacks? I abused that heavily, and managed to no-miss Ristar. Should I be proud of myself or ashamed? Did I even beat the game?

I'm not sure... but I don't particularly care about this, and you shouldn't either. I mean, was it the most legit and skillful way to do it? No... but did you do it? Yes, you did, no codes or glitches, just this resource that any video game has, if you go and pause just in the right time to react to some attack and dodge it, despite not pausing with an intention to do so... did you cheat? No, so stop it.

P.S. I want to congratulate you on that Ristar run aswell, you did it, don't let anyone tell you that it doesn't count, because only you know how hard it was and what it took, be more carefree, please.

To be fair, slo-mo functions on old third-party controllers just mashed the pause button repeatedly, which got less effective as games started adding pause menus and other clutter.
