SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but expensive), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- RG556 (180$, horizontal, 5.8" 16:9 OLED Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30/RGB20SX (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (50$, vertical, 4:3 screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Not exactly PSP form factor but you could get a Retroid 3+, probably your best bet, but even that will struggle with demanding PS2 games. You could look into getting a phone (not an emu handheld), but those are expensive asf and the beefiest ones are still hueg. The age of small electronics is dead.

During Covid, for whatever reason, a lot of these companies started directly competing with one another instead of just pumping out random garbage, and by 2022 they started being a viable quality to actually begin picking and choosing which chinkheld is best for you concerning form factor and performance.

Originally the Anbernic RG280V was the first commonly popular one, as people were blown away that you could relatively play PS1 games on such a little device. And then Tiktok shoved the Miyoo Mini hardcore into peoples' faces with ads and influencer reviews.

....Or did you mean in terms of physical size? In that case; screen size and certain hardware just requires certain parts and need to be a certain size to run, less they overheat and catch fire/explode.

The thing is that if you want to system transfer from an old 3DS you have you have to system change which kills the DS side of things. Apparently you can get it back now according to the hacking guide. We also don't really have any Activity Log homebrews that work which would mitigate a third of the reason why you would want to system transfer (The second being games and saves without backing everything up, and the third being all your tickets and NNID). Cthulhu is the only way I know how to move over Activity Log stuff but it itself leaves a trace of having used it which not everyone wants.

I think there's also an issue where if the thing has ever accessed the eShop prior to the system transfer it also makes using your NNID impossible?

Some people aren't built for living in another country; even ones that are similar to home.
If you were ever young and dumb enough to go into service, you're moulded in such a way that it's a bit easier to live & work abroad, being separated from family/friends. People without those connections often do better acclimating,
Still after a few years there's things I appreciate about being back home, home comforts and all that and things I miss too.

Build quality feels great, the early models had a massive issue with the L2/R2 buttons being stiff, and the speaker being rotated in a dumb way.
Those issues are fixed unless you are somehow unlucky and get an early rev (very unlikely).

It's a good time to own one since both the stock and CFW options have been improving, also it's one of the few Linux handhelds that actually sleeps properly.

I have more GBA recommendations then I do GBC but here:

GB/GBC:
Pokemon games
Zelda games
Mario games

All good quality. Shantae is good. I liked Power Quest a lot when I was a kid.

GBA Games:
All the Pokemon games
All the Castlevania games
Zelda: Minish Cap
Megaman Battle Network Series
Megaman Zero Series
Sonic Advance Series
Sonic Battle
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis
The Advance Wars series
Dragonball Z: Legacy of Goku I & II
Dragonball Z: Buu's Fury
Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Both the Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games are fun as fuck
Super Robot Taisen Original Generation 1 and 2
Metroid Zero Mission
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Duel Academy
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
Summon Knight:Swordcraft Story 1 and 2
Sword of Mana

I have played all of these and think they are all good. I don't mind answering questions about any of the above games. I've played basically the entire GBA library because when I was 12-13 I discovered what roms where and the only emulator I really had was a GBA one. Basically emulated every game I didn't own physically. GBA had the best 2D games IMO.

Oh, I don't think so. Different anon here by the way, and software such as CFW, themes, and other things being less common for the CPU of the TSP than the Rockchip systems, and less documentation of many allwinner CPUs, does not mean its weaker in every way. Cores matter, and Rockchip along with maybe some Mediatek CPUs having more options in terms of viable CFW, sourceports, homebrew applications, doesn't mean its stronger in terms of computing power by default. Either way, even at the TSP's alleinner a133's upper limit, like Rockchip, is little league compared to Mediatek and (at least most) Qualcomm CPUs

RG-35XX SP, RG-28XX, RG-35XX H, or New RG-35XX Plus? Sticks are a bonus but I hear the RG-35XX H's are awful and not worth the extra money.

I already own a basic bitch RG35XX but after over a year with it I kinda want to change it up. These four all appear to be basically the exact same fucking handheld, just in four different form factors. I was leaning towards the RG-28XX because it looks cute and has a smaller screen, finding 3.5 inches too big for most of the games I wanna play. I'm leaning away from the SP only because god knows how long the hing will last before it gets loose/cracks and that fucking battery just being open against everything in the PCB with that giant gap in the back terrifies me. The H is the most expensive too. I think I'll just get the 28XX unless there's a good reason not to.

They're not in a great position and the device firmware snaps them into the 8 cardinals/diagonals (gullikits or software will not fix it unless someone discovers a fix)
>that fucking battery just being open against everything in the PCB with that giant gap in the back terrifies me
This is also the case with the H, though not the 28 and probably not the + (I don't see a teardown on youtube), as the original and most verticals seem to put the chips at the top and the battery at the bottom.

funny you mention the FunkeyS

close the lid, it makes an autosave and shuts off. open the lid, it boots and loads the save in only 3 seconds. for a handheld of this size, the most important feature is being able to take it out and put it away quickly, and the funkeyS is perfect at that. the clamshell protects it while in your pocket, and just opening and closing it is all you have to do to save and resume your progress. and since it shuts off completely, not a standby, the battery doesn't drain either.

of course it does have downsides, most obvious the tiny size. the controls are cramped and the screen is unusable for reading text, and not only that, the screen is only 240x240 so it has to crop most game systems.

Is the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro decent for PS2 games? All I want is Shadow of the Colossus and MGS portable but I heard SotC struggles and I don't know how MGS will work on it without pressure sensitive buttons. Also seems like a 4:3 screen would be more practical for the majority of consoles it can emulate.

there is pretty much only 2 clam shells. v90 and an anbernic one coming out in like the next 2 days but it's 60 bucks I think (pic rel). miyoo is meant to be releasing one with sticks but that shit is taking forever and usually they have stock issues. who knows maybe the release of the anbernic one will speed them up.
other than that there are obviously ds and 3ds but they cost heaps and are pretty meh to me if you aren't into the ds 3ds library.
but the new anbernic should be good because it will be really popular and should get lots of firmware support.

nta but since we're past bump limit:
It grinds against you if you're an immigrant not just there but really all of Asia. It's different from say living as an expat in yurop or burgerland etc where there's more multiculturalism and social diversity baked in; people are more accepting of others despite the constant culture wars. Japan isn't as bad as South Korea though where there's a lot more classism baked into the society.
Japan is more a series of mediocre bullshit thrown at you, you'll be talked down to a lot, it grates on you if you can't take it. You'll always be treated like a foreigner, people will assume you're naíve etc. If you hate bureaucracy, you shouldn't move to Japan. If you're easily offended or don't want to be called a gaijin then you're doomed.

Another strange thing that happens is people will attempt to speak English to you by default and then you have the weird phase afterwards where they compliment your Japanese.
It's not as bad with co-workers/friends after a bit, I didn't mind shooting the shit in English with people who wanted to improve but I was mindful that as an immigrant it is impolite to converse in a foreign language people that others may not understand saw a lot of this weird tension in the forces & uni

The last thing is a mix of the first set of stuff & a mixture of being homesick. If you come from a Western country like the US or say the country there's a bit of culture shock hitting too. The mundanity of daily life building upon everything and some can't hack it.
If you lived somewhere like the US or country, your daily life is disconnected from others, you commute to work in a car etc and you retire to your home away from others but if you're not in the country you're gonna be commuting with others and around people constantly.
I don't look down on people who leave after only a few years, you experienced something and returned to a familiar life.

I still hate media prices in Japan tho.

What do we think of the Odin mini bros?

Personally I think it's pointless. It's more expensive than the RP4P so it's only competing with the Odin 2. And at that point you're just trading portability for an extra $40 price tag. I doubt the mini LED screens look much better than the Odin 2 screens either.

I bought one as a gift for a relative and I've been setting it up until I give it to them as a gift. I can only speak of the UI experience and build quality (Got the revision).
The UI itself is okay but it has an issue initially with letting you know there's more sections to the right outside of the basic three. I didn't even know until my second boot that I could actually go past the first three sections, I thought it just stopped at "Apps" because I guess I pressed down and it didn't want to move right or something. I was so confused as to why I couldn't find the "Settings" section until that. Once I found out I could go past that it was fine and I don't have any real issues with the stock OS barring the weird way they use the FN button. I'd still wait for Knulli though.

Build quality is far worse than my RG35XX-H, I have no idea what >>10934286 or >>10934772 are talking about. The case itself feels like the cheapest plastic known to man and feels like if I drop it it'll shatter like glass. The d-pad is awesome and really clicky but anything that's not the d-pad feels extremely cheap both to touch and press. The bumpers and face buttons feel higher quality than the rest of the secondary buttons but they're still really cheap feeling. The screen is beautiful and clear. Audio sounds like a tinny speaker but better than what I heard in reviews. Worst part is the rumble which you can hear the motor sound like it might be grinding at 4 or 5 which is super offputting.

Ehhh, idk I had to click a hidden post just to see it and it seems to be about the TSP? They got filtered by the UI, admittedly the UI is terrible for browsing games but how they managed to do
>I didn't even know until my second boot that I could actually go past the first three sections, I thought it just stopped at "Apps" because I guess I pressed down and it didn't want to move right or something.
this, it is beyond me.
>Build quality is far worse
>The case itself feels like the cheapest plastic known to man
This seems to indicate some degree of seethe since the TSP has a very nice finish, it's a soft touch plastic similar to what you'd find on a set of keycaps or a nice controller, not at all the cheapest plastic known to man like you'd find on the worst famiclones, powkiddy or R36S etc.
>The bumpers and face buttons feel higher quality than the rest of the secondary buttons
This is odd too since the bumpers and triggers still feel like the weakest part of the TSP's build quality, the buttons aren't stiff, they're responsive and clicky, extremely similar to the DSi XL.
I'm not sure if they got a bad unit or how the UI managed to filter them so hard, it's fairly intuitive to switch between the tabs, you press up on the dpad and it highlight the tab then you hit L/R or dpad L/R to move it, it does only show three at a time but it does clearly move on to settings.

They're usually filtered for a reason and posts like that one where they have been filtered is a solid enough reason to continue to do so.
The TSP certainly has flaws, the speakers are the main one, it gets a little toasty at the right where the CPU is and there's still firmware improvements to be made and GPU issues to be solved. Their post really touches on none of that at all so it's understandable why someone would ignore them.

heh, I never noticed this and just checked, still in 1.0.4. Seems my muscle memory makes me hit B to exit out instead of A but I can see how that'd be an issue, strangely it doesn't do it on a B press.
I have my own issues with that menu though, I'd like to disable it or at least have it close on a second menu press instead of B.

Because when I first booted it up it refused to go right past whatever is to the left of "Apps" which I think is "Games"? I could hit the right bumper or right on the d-pad and it did nothing which left me completely confused to where the settings are. On a reboot it let me go right. I assume I might have had a bug or maybe I pressed down which didn't put me at the top bar, but come on now, this shouldn't even be an issue on first boot.
>some degree of seethe since the TSP has a very nice finish
What? It feels like I am putting my hands on cheap plastic. It does not feel like a "very nice finish", it just feels like cheap plastic. A random bottle of extremely cheap store-brand rubbing alcohol I have right next to me is contained in higher quality feeling plastic than the TSP. Like I said, it feels like if I drop the system it'll shatter into pieces. The best comparison I have is it feels like the plate on top of my PDP Rematch controller I have for my Switch which I paid $15 for which feels like cheap plastic with a matte finish.
>the buttons aren't stiff
I never said they're stiff, I said they feel like they're lower quality than stuff like the start, select, menu, volume, and power buttons. They have a much cheaper feeling plastic feel than the d-pad which feels like the highest quality button on the entire system outside of maybe the FN switch. The bumpers and face buttons still feel like lower quality plastic than the d-pad but they're not as cheap feeling as the other buttons I mentioned.

Look, you may like it, but I have no idea how you can feel like this is of higher quality plastic than other things you own.

Sorry, I mean to say that it basically goes

in terms of quality. I don't know why start and select in particular feel so cheap compared to the bumpers and face buttons. the R2/L2 or whatever they call it buttons feel exactly like Switch Joycon ZL/ZR buttons when you press them function-wise but plastic-wise they feel cheaper. There should be some script that doesn't allow you to post on /vr/ if you have visited /v/ in the past 24 hours, the quality would change tremendously.

I realize it's a, "punish the entire school and don't allow snacks in the hallways because of one grade nine kid being a slob" level of bullshit but honestly, for the past seven months or so people have just been coming here fresh from /v/ and posting here like it's fucking /b/.

At least the fucking Redditors know what a file and a folder are.

This is genuinely what every single zoomer/gen alpha child unironically acts and sounds like whenever they fucking post here and I am exhausted with it. It's like visiting a friend to have some hobby time discussion, but they're babysitting their wive's friend's kids who can't fucking be left alone, so every single time anything is fucking said between you and your friend these little RETARDS just zoom by, knocking tea on your lap, screeching at pitches higher than any animal. And your friend just goes, "Oh, they're just kids...!" and acts like it's acceptable or tolerable.

Zoomers call everything tranny out of paranoia. Zoomies tried the whole, "ok boomer" shit as their dismissive chip but it failed so laughably hard in their tech illiterate faces.

Redditors at least discuss handhelds, these fucking /v/ faggots just keep shitposting AI-quality replies absolutely bitching about HOW people are posting rather than the actual content of the posts. Not a single fucking thing they post has any relation to retro video games or handhelds or emulation chinkhelds or anything fucking in this thread, it's all about HOW the thread operates and WHO is in the thread, Jesus fucking Christ take this unironic Twitter shit the fuck out of here, don't fucking even open this thread unless you're fucking discussing handhelds, it's that fucking simple.

>Maybe try Thailand
I never lived in Thailand, just visited, lived in Shanghai/HK for a year.
Thailand's nice if you're a sex tourist but it's got the opposite problem of Japan. These places are nice to visit for small pockets at a time or if you're a country bumpkin I guess.
Also to be kinda offensive Chinese/Japanese women are better looking in general anyway.
