>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but expensive), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- RG556 (180$, horizontal, 5.8" 16:9 OLED Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30/RGB20SX (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (50$, vertical, 4:3 screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

All I do is "Add non-Steam game to library" and then enable proton, it takes like 3 seconds and requires zero brain power or effort. You could always just use windows on Deck instead if even that's too much, but that's a massive downgrade to me. Fair enough on EAC, I don't play multiplayer slop so I wouldn't know.

Craziest thing happened to me today, I was walking my dog when I stumbled upon this Analogue Pocket sitting on a 6ft tall wall. Boxed, brand new. Guess the previous owner didn't want it anymore. Anyway form factor kind of sucks cocks, the dpad sits in a gaping hole, the start select buttons are too flush with body, shoulder buttons suck. The other buttons aren't too bad. The cartridges could use a deeper slot probably. Overall I still like this thing but boy am I glad that I didn't pay more than 200 bucks for it.

If you want us to go into detail it's because the og hardware is quite frankly not very good. No battery, no backlight, and forced to pay for the games themselves (or a flash cart, which is still extra money). What? I was looking at prices for random stuff and $100ish used for "Like new" GBAs is not a bad price at all. Same deal with SPs and GBCs. GBPs were also not that expensive and I haven't looked at DMGs.
DS Phat and DS Lite are dirt cheap with mobos for both sometimes going as little as $20 working meaning you can get a Chinesium shell + screen for $10 and have a working DS for $30, or just pay $40-50 for a working used one in good condition.
DSis are getting more expensive but that's mainly because of softmodding and even then last I checked it was $80ish.
OG 3DS are like $100-140ish, it only starts to get expensive when you go to N3DS systems or N3DSXLs, and if you buy N3DS from Japan (LLs) and don't care about breaking the DS functionality by region changing you can get them for about $120ish. 2DS are even cheaper because no one wants those.
PSPs are only in the $50-120 range last I checked.
Vitas are expensive now but that's because of Covid, and even then you can still get the slims for like $180 last I checked. The main issue with Vitas now are game prices being in the $100 range, not the system.
Wonderswans are going for $40-60 "Like new" used if you import, Colors are like $80, SwanCrystals are like $120.

Sure, if you consider the cheap AliExpress consoles as your baseline these are more expensive by 2-4 times, but come on now, these are official, working systems.
You also don't need an Everdrive for a lot of systems so unless you're buying a Wonderswan I have no idea why you think paying $20ish for a flash cart on older systems is insane. I paid $35 for an EZ Flash Jr. but could have opted for a $20 knockoff Everdrive v5 for GB and GBC. GBA is only $60 for an EZ-Flash Omega or $20 if you want to go oldschool with the Supercards. R4 knockoffs that work with all DS and 3DS systems are $20 or just get a Parallel if you don't care about Read/Write speeds.

People hate on vertislops too hard. Honestly, I think screens look bigger on vertislops compared to horislops, since having controls around the screen makes it look cramped and compressed, compared to how vertislops leave the screen area free and uncluttered. Personally, the 3.5” screen on the RP2S felt just a bit too cramped for me, but the 2.8” one on the Miyoo Mini works out just fine.

I mean, compare the RGB30 vs the RGB20SX. Literally the exact same screen, but don’t pretend like the SX doesn’t look bigger.

It's a common theory since 'flower girl' can be slang for hooker and she charges men different prices based what is assumed to be how attracted she is to them. It's been said that she isn't one however and is just a girl selling flowers because they are extremely hard to get in Midgar. She apparently asks Cloud on a date because he reminds her of her ex. The reasons for that are spoilers.

It doesn't honestly matter either way unless you feel like getting into shipping wars that have been done to death for like 20 years now.

PSA for anyone looking into getting an Ally, especially for RMA coverage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pMrssIrKcY

TL;DW: process is a nightmare, threat of loss of storage and data, any accessories thrown away, RMA complaints ignored entirely and warranty voided over a near microscopic dent on the case, Asus wanted to charge $200 for a new case with a new screen plus shipping, immediately started a 5 business days countdown threatening to ship it back disassembled if unpaid. RMA complaints only addressed after a dispute, poor communication even after that.

SD card reader apparently still defective by design also.

I downloaded the tiny best set, got the neogeo.zip file from BIOS and ROMS/NEOGEO and some roms and they worked. I can also confirm that even if the roms are ok they won't work if your rename the files, this didn't happen in any other console for me.

Used GBA market is absolutely ridiculous but if you wait long enough, you can find local GBAs on FB Marketplace for low enough.

Even so, after doing all of the tedious IPS screen mod, it's not worth it since the sound chip is garbage anyway.

>loved GBA for a few games when it came out on the OG GBA and emulated it on the Win 98 / 2000 computer at times which ran just fine

Been a few days since I got the 35XX Plus to potentially replace the 353V.

Impressed by its d-pad, but also by how fucking horrendous the 353V's is in comparison. Not as loose, little shallower, no false diagonals. Pulling moves more reliably as a shitter at fighters.
Nice screen. The curved edge glass makes applying screen protectors stupid and its borderless nature leaves me worried it won't survive a fall, though it gives it flair.
Glossy face buttons suck and should be outlawed.
The shoulder buttons feel nice but don't change much in ergonomics. They're a little less protruded and have less travel than the 353V's however, so that's good for pocketing.
I'm a no sticks missile now, you can get by with sticks at the bottom but it's ultimately not worth it.
The DMG beige grey unexpectedly hit me with nostalgia for better electronics, photos always make this color scheme look bad. Also nice how its buttons aren't labeled, the others look tacky.
The speaker didn't get muffled by my grip as I thought it would.
H700 feels closer to the RK3566 in performance than expected. Still a farcry from what I'd want from a vertical, but Anbernic just makes shit products above this price range.
Charging with C to C cables works now or so I'm told, same old 5v2a however.
Stock firmware is crap.

I give it 6 magicals out of 10, CFWs needs more time in the oven, probably not worth the upgrade from 35XX or Mini until software matures and it goes on sale. Also careful you don't fall for the 35XX 2024 scam. Thanks for reading my blog and sorry for not being assed to take a pic.

nta but the 3DS is unnecessarily bulky for everything it emulates, at least compared to other options.
Great for 3DS games, but it loses to every other option for anything else. The only way I could justify using it for emulation is if you already have one, because otherwise you're paying $200 (N3DS) to play SNES/PS1 worse than a $50 option (R36S).
Even an analog pocket would be a better investment at ~$40 more, and that's just unacceptable.

I doubt a single anon was inspired to get one due to my earlier shilling of the thing but I still feel bad that I ever had any hype for it.

OG RG35XX if you can get it; the 2024 one is a trap that doesn’t have GarlicOS like the old model does. Otherwise, get the Miyoo Mini+. OnionOS is objectively the main selling point of that device that puts it far and above everything else in its price range.

It's still insane how close to perfect it is for me but Anbernig found a way to drop the ball with the sticks. If they fix those in a future update I think it'll beat RP2S in terms of being a budget horizontal with sticks for earlier systems.
Form factor wise it's a solid 8 for what I want from a horizontal pocketable.
Tempted to try out the RG28XX for the size but I'll wait for the software to mature a bit as the rotated screen shit sounds fucking annoying to deal with.

The next logical step for me are handheld PCs. I do have a laptop, but being able to play the entire PC library on the couch would be nice. Unfortunately I don't think pc handhelds are quite there. Having tried the deck, ally, and legion go I think it needs another 3 years to cook.

I wouldn't say things are that bad for Handheld PC gaming. They're definitely better than they were in 2017, I think there was one GPD handheld around that time which was only able to run MGSV at 720p sub 30fps, just as an indicator of what it was capable of.
Things are way better now in terms of performance and options, especially with the controller friendly navigation on the 'Eck. The only major problem I can think of is battery life, which seemingly will never be fixed on Windows handhelds any time soon due to the sheer amount of bloat and inefficient APUs used. I guess it would also be nice too if they were more smaller devices like the Ayaneo Air at more reasonable prices and with better battery life, but I dont see that happening until 2027 at the earliest.

Yeah. I had an original 3DS and shit talked the 3D like everyone else. N3DS adds face tracking that gives you more viewing angles.

But what nobody talks about, is how you have to hold the 3DS a certain distance away from your face or you get a double image. The original is just too small to want to view from that distance. But with the XL the viewing distance is right in the sweet spot.

3D adds more to my enjoyment than a higher resolution would. It's especially cool in Mario kart, 3D Land, A link Between Worlds, and Dead or Alive.

Understandable, youtube reviews are all disinforming shills and the only way to learn this shit is digging deep into reddits and discords, dissecting feedback and uncovering quirks.

Verticals are at an awful spot because there's this misconception consumers will give companies shit for not placing sticks on higher costing ones, plus there's a generalized disregard for quality and engineering on anything larger and more powerful than the $50 bracket (probably because they don't sell nearly as much), as briefly mentioned in my driveby review of the Plus: >>10926804. For example, I'd love to grab a RGB20SX for its 4 inch 1:1 display as I already know that screen from my RGB30, it's fantastic and a perfect fit for GB, but it's ruined by sticks with even less spacing than Anbernics get and Powkiddy d-pads are less than stellar. The RG405V has a 4 inch 4:3 display and a reasonably powerful chip that lets you play just about anything short of Saturn, PS2 and GC with varying results, but it's ridiculously huge, has sticks and it's layout has such a chinese, generic, wasteful feel it hurts my soul. Scarlet and Violet actually only have lifetime sales of 24 million copies, opposed to Sword and Shield which got 50 million. 24 million is still a lot of Pokedrones and normies mindlessly consooming, but it's not even half as many as the previous generation had. I enjoyed the Pokemon anime until the unironic genius decision to have Ash fail the Pokemon League. The Orange Islands filler and all seasons after that seemed to fall into the exact same three episode tropes over and over and over again and became stale;
1. Ash encounters a new Pokemon and fails to catch it. Spends the episode befriending it so the Pokemon chooses to side with Ash/one of his companions.
2. Team Rocket is after a Pokemon. Ash and friends save the Pokemon from Team Rocket than walk away abandoning it, waving goodbye to it in the sunset.
3. Ash fights a new trainer/gym leader and loses. He spends the episode learning some stupid out of game technique to defeat/overcome the trainer/gym leader, become friends, and then walk away never to see them again waving in the sunset.
It fucking sucked until the Sun/Moon change in animation style allowed for more gags and enduring moments with the Pokemon.

That's not what happened. Iwata's compression algorithm was less efficient than the one Game Freak developed, loading assets (particularly in battle) were a few frames faster since they weren't as compressed. So Iwata's was used to streamline gameplay at the expense of larger file sizes.

Is this a retroid pocket 4 pro chip or an odin 2 chip? Or is it a handheld PC? If it's odin 2 I regret getting mine 4 months ago lmao

I hope the release more colors.
GBA blue, gold or snes colors would be nice.

SP blue, GBA indigo, GBA transparent purple, or a more grey SNES version would have been nice. Not sure why they chose the colors they did.

Same reason they release gta on consoles first for a year, then PC. So you can buy twice.

>I've heard that your TriUI system is bad and cheap.
simply false. there is no CFW, but the stock UI works perfectly fine, and you can just use Retroarch directly if you want. it's also theme-able and redditfags have made an assload of themes for it already.

If Powkiddy needed a standardized "perfect" dpad shape. What should it be?

>if you've updated the system software since 2019, you're out of luck.
You have no fucking idea what you're talking about, every pre-July 2018 unit is forever hackable.

You're right, I never really gave a fuck and apparently in the Switch cfw "community" people call post July 2018 consoles "patched consoles", I just assumed they meant the user installing a software update. But it's a stupid lingo for hardware "patched" units.
Anyway the vast majority of Switch owners will not have a unit from before July 2018, and if I remember correctly the battery life and the screen quality are kinda shit on those old Switches anyway.

The most I've been able to stand playing on my 28 is Symphony of the Night. I can't imagine playing something like Resident Evil or Spyro on it. I mainly use it for GBC/A and SNES.
