General consensus here is that they're a waste of money and misleading. They are emulators on chips, not reproductions of the original hardware. These emulators are typically worse than what is seen on the PC and the devices themselves are almost ALWAYS of poor quality.

Personally, I don't see the point. If you're going the legit route, famiclones are often around the same price of the console itself.

Not all of them you idiot
The older famiclones found in places like South America, China and Russia had clone hardware

>They are emulators on chips
Do you even know how a fucking emulator works???
Explain why they should put a quite powerful processor that runs a terrible emulator on a single chip, when they could just keep reusing their cheap, old and inaccurate hardware clone (that many people bought back then, without thinking what exactly it is).

4 things that they mostly never gotten right.
1: Audio, the one NOAC has correct Squarewave dutycycles but then the other channels are wrong instead and etc.
2. Color emphasis, most NOACs don't get it right resulting into darker screens or even wrong colored screens in some games (Felix the Cat, Jungle book and the unlicensed games made by Super Game like Lion King and Aladdin).
3. Wiring of the console internal video RAM, a few games that use a so called '4-screen mirroring' mode (Rad Racer 2 is one of them) won't work because the way of disabling it won't work like the original hardware (they left that specific input pin out).
4. That one single PPU address pin (A13), the most carts don't need it (they all use the inverted one instead), but 4screen needs it for overriding the internal VRAM chip and MMC5 because Nintendo used that pin instead of (the standard) inverted pin.

Stop talking about hardware that you don't fully understand.

TL;DR; Famiclone != Emulator

The Retron5 which comes out in December promises to have 100 percent compatibility; whether or not its true will have to be seen.

Id love to make my own.

Ive been messing around with microcontrollers and gamepads (mostly just making parallel to serial for USB) and its a lot of fun getting into the guts of them. Id love to do something similar with the console itself.

I'd love to get one if it does work, but I just can't really afford to hunt for old carts.

Shit, tell me where they're selling those Famicoms for $4

Do you even third world? Maybe you're going by EBay prices but these things can be found for less than $10 or $20 new CIB/if you like getting scammed. And not all of them are terrible mind you (pic unrelated though)

only very early famiclones (those ones similar to the dendys) were ok since they used reproduction hardware and in fact, actual hardware!, instead of those crappy button chips.

Famiclones are typically actual clone hardware, not emulators. They contain a reimplementation, in silicon, of the NES 6502+PPU+IO and some RAM.

Some Mega-Drive clones are surprisingly accurate, because the MD is almost all off-the-shelf hardware (bog-standard 68000 and Z80, Yamaha synth, some RAM, and a video chip that's very closely related to that from the TI/99).
