idk what i'm doing edition

i think /vr/ should have a retro computer general.
>it should go on /g/
realistically no one is using them for anything other than video games.

lets get some pastebins set up or something, emulators, suggested machines, must try lists, modern hardware upgrades, etc.

How is that micropcs like conmodore, amiga and then both of the MSXs were able to do gaming better then 80s and early 90s PCs?

>> No.10921113

>>10921095
Because PCs were business oriented and so their capabilities reflected that. Expansions do help especially at the tail-end of the 80s and from the 90s on, but games weren't in anyone's mind when the IBM PC family was starting out. The PCjr was made with that in mind, but that kinda sucked.

What's the limit on what is considered a retro PC? Is a pre GPGPU machine with a geforce 7xxx retro or is the definition still stuck where it was 10 years ago?

>> No.10921405

>>10921380

My personal rule would be a computer designed for XP is the limit (so, probably nothing with a quad core processor), but then some people would probably say any Windows gaming isn't retro, and that really we should stop at the 486, or maybe Pentium I at a push.

which is why the innovations of the PCjr ended up being better known from their use by Tandy's Tandy 1000 line which didn't suck

I'd say >>10921405 has it right that Windows XP is probably the cutoff point(the release of Windows Vista roughly lines up with where things cutoff currently for home consoles anyways) though I imagine most of the conversation will be about stuff from between the early 80's to about 1999 or so

For a modern upgrade I joined the USB4VC kickstarter so I don't have to wear out my few old space invaders/alps/buckling springs keyboards and just use an affordable modern one. Unfortunately, it requires a Pi which I do not have. I hear the price of those has skyrocketed due to geopolitical reasons, and the only ones in my area are some bootleg Chinese "Orange Pi" opposed to the standard Raspberry kind. I only would dedicate it for usage in the USB4VC exclusively, so maybe is there an outlet for used old Raspberry ones? What is the fair lowest price for a compatible one that would work? I'm also considering a 2nd exclusively for Pi hole adblocking which would probably require a more powerful modern one. As a bonus, using the USB4VC would allow modern console controllers which were superior to the controller options I had for sound cards' game ports without resorting to a PicoGUS.

To the anon who mentioned that GF4 MX series video cards didn't actually have shaders (on account of them being GF2 MX cards, which also didn't have shaders): you were proven right when I tried starting Fantasy Wars on my laptop's GF4 Go420 (mobile GF4 MX) and it popped up a "no shaders detected" error.
Fuck nVidia for one of the most egregious examples of misleading marketing in IT history.

It says it can use any model B Pi from 2 through 4, only the 4 can potentially cost more if you get one of the ones with more than a GB of ram, all of them should go for about 40 with shipping, possibly less. Just order one off ebay

You import. Depending on what you want, get a high end later years 9801. Don't get a 9821, as those break full compatibility for more "proper" Windows support, leading to some software just not working anymore and needing patches. Generally speaking most 9821 era software is just Windows software anyway, so there's little reason to own one when importing.

Zdoom LE is absolutely essential for anyone running a Win98SE machine with at-least a Pentium III. By-far the most sovlful way to play Doom WADs as long as they're not complex or dependent on modern hardware features.

Welcome to the Retrocomputing Archive
http://www.retroarchive.org/

This site was created as a logical extension to the original Commercial CP/M Software Archive. The focus has been expanded to encompass all types of "classic" computer systems and their software, not just CP/M.
Software and documentation for all computer systems is welcome here. Anything from the simplest 6502 based SBC to a huge VAX minicomputer; it has a home here.

Starglider 2 (Genuine predecessor to Star Fox)
Hunter (A military proto-GTA)
I really love Ultima 2-5 on the ST, they're my favorite ports. Excellent music renditions on 3 and up, while 2 utilizes the GEM desktop elements which is a comfy trip.
Caverns of Larn is a great text-mode roguelike.
Bloodwych is a very interesting title, a full on dungeon crawler RPG that allows 2 player simultaneous realtime play on shared keyboard with joysticks/mouse, each with their own 4-man party.

Perhaps Time Bandit is one of the most iconic and original titles on the ST. It's a
run'n'gun action game (whose original version predates Gauntlet) across a huge variety of biomes, some of which vary the gameplay by incorporating adventure game elements or homages to other games (such as an area that functions exactly like Pac-Man)

Honestly though a lot of my best experiences with the ST come from many many long days playing around with magazine disks and mail order software compilations of all kinds of neat utilities and design/programming packages and other odd tools, it's hard to really recreate that experience.

I found this little fella in my garage the other day, I was given it by an old employee who told me it didn't work but never detailed how. Needless to say I haven't tested it yet, but I do at least have the power adapter. Is there a foolsguide to getting this to work?
