Gotta keep the dream alive. Anyways I'm gonna get a few rounds of Berzerk in to celebrate surviving severe weather. Will update with my scores.

Why the 2600 version of Berzerk and not the arcade original?

>> No.10914575

Has anybody played the arcade game Tunnel Hunt? Apparently it started out at Atari under the name of Tube Chase before being aquired by Exidy (who renamed it Vertigo) and then finally Centuri who changed its name yet again. Apparently it was originally going to be a vector game (THAT would have been interesting). There's a very brief write-up on the history of it here:

The more I think about Atari 5200, the more the whole story behind the console becomes completely retarded. A consolized version of their three year old computer which is compatible with neither Atari 2600 nor Atari 800, the computer in question. It feels like 5200 existed solely because they needed a new product.

problem with 2600 cartridges is that, often times, you're just buying plastic. a lot of them were not stored well, they're not in great condition, the consoles themselves are finally aging out... i go to a flea market where you can always find a few 2600 games per week but they're usually just commons or maybe the occasional uncommon.

I've been playing some of the games on this thing. Gravitar and Lunar Lander are extremely hard. (It seems like the touchscreen can probably mimic the latter's physical control lever respectably well. I imagine a mouse would work even better, but I'm on a DS kick and I don't feel like playing at my PC.)

Games in the collection are:
Pong
Breakout
Asteroids
Centipede
Gravitar
Lunar Lander
Missile Command
Sprint
Tempest
Warlords

As the compilation's big gimmick, the games all come with "remixed" graphical modes designed by allegedly famous graffiti artists, but those are mostly ugly and I never use them. There is also a pair of Atari Greatest Hits collections for the DS that appear to be superior to this one in most ways. But this is the one I bought back in the day, so this is the one I play.

Centipede is a pretty cool game I think. I guess the cabinet had a trackball though? I feel weird playing it with more conventional controls, even though the 2600 version that worked that way is the one I grew up with. This DS compilation doesn't provide a way to emulate the trackball via the touchscreen - you just drag your dude around directly with the stylus, minus lag caused because he apparently has a maximal speed, but he always goes right to where you direct him pretty quickly anyway.

Graphics on the vector-based games are hard to read sometimes because of the screen's low resolution. I don't find it to be a serious problem, so I continue to play with this not-especially-good compilation.

I gather Missile Command also used a trackball. This DS version, again, has you either use the d-pad or just tap wherever you want to fire. As with Centipede, I grew up with the 2600 version and now kinda want to find out whether it's actually fun to play with a much more awkward input device. But I don't care nearly enough to buy a trackball to confirm that I would not in fact like it very much. (I could see trackball Centipede being fun though.)

What was the original motion-input device for Tempest? Google Image Search seems to be telling me that it was a spinning knob thingy, but I also see some images with trackballs in them.

That's another one I've never played with analog controls. I don't think I've ever encountered it in an actual arcade.
