Retro handhelds spreadsheet https://pastebin.com/ZyqXr19r
SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality.
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with lower prices, better specs, but weaker build qualities
TrimUI: Good build quality, shitty software with no good CFW alternatives

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- RG556 (180$, horizontal, 5.8" 16:9 OLED Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Not unless OLED screens become a lot cheaper. Retroid's big selling point is their value, and Anbernic had to charge almost $40 more for their RG556 than the Base Pocket 4 just to get that OLED screen in there (and even then they had to cheap out on build quality to do it)

Retroid's in a good spot right now, the 2S is basically the undisputed king of $100 systems, and the 4 Pro is AFAIK the only pocketable console under $200 capable of GCN and PS2. I don't see them wanting to fuck up that formula any time soon.

My advice is get an original RG35XX off amazon, you can find a lot of listings under $70 with free 2 day shipping, and they often come with a half decent carrying case, too. I've given three as gifts (My adult sister, an adult out of state friend, and my 13 year old nephew) and they all seem to love it.

Only thing is don't just give it to them as-is. I typically get a fresh SD card, isntall garlic, and then throw in a library I have of all the "classic" games for each system as not to overwhelm them. I'd be happy to link the library I use if you like!

Asked this at the end of last thread but what should I opt for when it comes to a Wonderswan?
>Wonderswan Color with no IPS screen mod.
>Wonderswan Color with an IPS screen mod.
>SwanCrystal.
SwanCrystals are only like $30 more than a normal Color and to my understanding they're the best unmodded variant. I also can't seem to really find anything about the flashcart scene outside of Flash Masta's flashcart. Is that the only one where it's like the old GB, SNES, and NES flashcarts where you have to manually flash the thing every time you want to play a new game from your computer instead of an SD card solution?

I primarily want it just to play Rockman EXE WS with its original control scheme and maybe a couple other translated games like the Digimon ones. Plus the novelty of it. Ideally I'd grab the Crystal Blue Color if I was getting one and the Gameboy Advanced Blue/Purple if a SwanCrystal.

I get wanting a faithful experience but this is just tism at this point. People hated unlit screens even back when the Gameboy was still "current gen". The most popular accessories for them were lights just so people could see the damn things. It wasn't a stylistic choice, it was literally just a way to keep the budget down, and the most popular

If you went back to the year 1995 and said "Hey, would you rather have a fully lit LCD screen", 99% of people would say "oh fuck yes, please", and they'd call you a dipshit for saying "but aktshully, it's not authentic, Mario Land 2 wasn't meant to be well lit"

Yes, I remember because I lived through it and hated the Worm Light with every fiber of my being for eating up all my battery power. This doesn't change the fact that people want an authentic experience. This doesn't just mean it being unlit, this also means the same lattice/fence effect on the screen, the same sized screen, etc.
I personally am okay with having a modded system on retro systems as long as it's not my only one. I'm not gonna take my SP or GBA and throw on an ITA/IPS screen, I'm gonna buy a second one to do that so I can keep my original just the way it was when I got it from my family. I'd be more than happy to buy a working motherboard, get an aftermarket shell, and slap on aftermarket screens and parts to bring new life to it, but I'm not gonna Frankenstein an OEM one.

It's liquid crystals suspended in a grid formation that rotate based on the electricity being pulsed through it, and said rotation creates the illusion of the pixels being opaque or translucent (which in turn translates to brightness/darkness).

The technology for color LCD is obviously more complex than monochrome but works on the same basic principal of rotating pockets of liquid crystal with electricity. Only real major difference between a modern handheld LCD and something like the gameboy color is, instead of a reflective panel as a backdrop, it's a light panel.

I said Rent A Hero because that's what I'm playing atm and it requires per-pixel to get rid of some really obvious graphical glitches, but desu it seems to be an issue in virtually every game I try. For instance, I just tried Sonic Adventure 1, and it's an issue there on the title screen and while playing through the first action stage (Azure Coast). It's an issue when I tried starting a game of Canon Spike. Rez is a complete fucking mess. Basically if you could try playing around in the first stage of any of these games, whether or not you see any flickering or artifacting like that webm would answer my question.

Alternatively if you don't have any of those DC games, you could list something you do have and whether you have issues while playing with per-pixel on. If not, then I could just check (confirm) on my end that I do while playing the same game.

>My brilliant idea is steam deck trackpads on the rear of a device in the vein of the vita backpad.
Nah, put nubs there but give them smaller rear buttons like the elite controller and allow them to be switched out for wingtabs if the user wants. The steam controller rear buttons were great, if a little big, the deck improves on that but the small profile on the elite controller is still the best rear button setup. Although that one is aided by having a better ergonomic grip than a handheld. Nubs and smaller rear buttons seem right.

I see where you're going with trackpads due to how robust steaminput is with programming track swipes, holds & taps though. You could fit one or two trackpads on the rear of a larger handheld or controller but it's the kind of thing you don't wanna register false inputs on like the other anon said with the vita, the kind of thing you tap/swipe with the tip of your middle or index finger.
Problem with a trackpad there is that you're then thinking about nub placement too. Nubs are small so it's less of an issue than the classic handheld problem of putting an stick between the menu buttons and the dpad/face buttons.

>>10913512
I'm thinking smaller trackpads rather than taking up the entire rear of the device to avoid that.
It's also very easy to just disable them when not in use and they don't compromise your grip on the system, tons of Vita games didn't even use the rear pad.
Nubs would work too, but I think you'd have to market around having a pair of nipples on your device, but yeah, similar concept.

Alternatively you could put two little trackpads on the bottom side too I suppose, a little lower down for swipe, tap, double tap & hold programming. Kinda useless for vertical swipes but you want to primarily be using your index & middle finger to rear buttons first.
The ring finger is almost useless when it comes to rear buttons and mobility so the best you can do is have a pressure sensitive button built into the grip but you run the risk of deathgrippers pissing themselves off too.

Just as likely that someone will else who isn't the owner will take it. Best bet for returning it is probably printing out a piece of paper asking if anyone has lost their gameboy with a phone number or en e-mail address, that way you can at least ask the person to identify it by scratches or colour before you give it to them or put it back for them to pick it up.

This is the explanation I need. Why would somebody who supposedly cares about their Gameboy leave it on top of a wall? With no game, and a dead battery? For me, I don't care. But I walk by, and see a random Gameboy. I just want to see if it works. Now I'm the bad guy.

I'm just saying what the basic minimum requirement of not being a retarded thief in this situation is. As long as your hands are clean and you did not steal the GBA, you are in the clear. Maybe someone else takes it, that makes them a bad person and does not reflect on you in any way. Maybe you go above the call of lack of action and put your paper there asking if someone is missing a GBA but guess what, someone who isn't the owner could still contact you and then you're an accessory to making sure the GBA finds its way to someone who wasn't its owner. This situation called for you to do nothing at all: the system was sitting there because someone put it there and you already own one so it isn't like you needed it for anything, it's your own fault you stole it and now your only justification is that someone else could steal it too if you left it there. You know what, congratulations on your new GBA. I hope that someday you realize what a complete dumbass you were for stealing it for no reason.

I'm convinced that anyone that calls buying chink handhelds a hobby has completely lost it, sort of the audiophile meme, but with less disposable money and more onions.
I'm also convinced these people barely play video games and have the most basic taste ever.
Also every chink handheld company is owned by the same anime tier kike overlord that has everyone stuck in consumerism purgatory releasing a never ending wave of flawed handhelds to keep you hooked forever.
The only way out is falling for the Famiclone meme or cutting your thumbs.
The Famiclone obsessed schizo is actually the wise fool for he has seen the light.

It's an early model with two TF slots for internal (firmware) and external (ROMs).
I've flashed the 32GB card I was using for firmware and Balena eventually said the flash was a success after I used a partition tool to completely wipe the microSD, but when I boot up the RG353P it just boots into Android without doing the expected Linux initial boot setup.

I'm stumped, I've made sure to use the RK3566 image intended for this device.

I ordered a new SD2Vita with my TSP a while back 'cause the last one was killing sandisk cards on cooldown so hope this time it goes better. Didn't work with an older 128GB card for some reason though.

If this SD2Vita starts killing cards I'm gonna have to scam Jeff Bezos to recoup my losses.

You can use a site like below to confirm heights and widths:
https://www.omnicalculator.com/other/screen-size
but basically: a 1:1 screen with a height of 3" will ofc have a 3" width, a 4:3 screen with the same height will have a 4" width, and a 16:9 screen with the same height will have a (16/3)" width. The 1:1 screen's width is 75% of the 4:3 screen's width (3/4), and the 4:3 screen's width is 75% the width of the 16:9 screen's width (4/(16/3)).

The last one posted here >>10915669 communicated the concept the best but is still kinda confusing. I'm not as invested as the person you're arguing with but seeing NES as 4:3 seems strange when it's 16:15.
Looking back at the reply chain I'm guessing the third is >>10913379 this handheld?

It could use better labelling and the real AR's, then screen sizes. Inman's tool is great, as is display wars for actual h/w measurements for screens. I can see how anon is confused desu.

I am an OG PSP Go simp and I'm gonna say it's amazing, weird cramped ergos but it was Sony stepping in the right direction. It scared Sony so much they nerfed the Vita.
It was hated for being digital only but the screen is very nice, that increased PPI from being smaller really benefits really any game but especially 3D games.

Without a dock, DS3 & component cables/capture hardware in the current age.....eh........, depends how much you like PSP, a V1k or Vita TV would be better. Back in the day it was the bomb, the screen's better than the other PSP consoles and aftermarket replacements fwiw.
There's also retro handhelds that do it better without weird ergos and the vita is of course split wide open.
There's a mod for an SD card over M2 but it doesn't fit well with the case iirc.

My sister finally broke down and started to let my nephews play video games. They have a big summer vacation overseas, so I wanted to get them a handheld for their birthdays that had a decent battery life for the plane + train rides. It only needs to play up to n64/psx. I wanted to keep it under $100, as I have to get all three of them one and I figure the youngest is going to trash it.

Are there any decent handhelds in that price range or should I just toss the idea?

Aaaah yes of course, but I was only considering the real usable area, mainly because psp and nds aren't retro. I imagined this was what you're talking about so that's why I also made a chart with the wasted spaces too after. I thought it was implicit, autism from my part.
As you can see, the real difference is really not that great from 4:3 x 16:9 than 1:1 x 4:3 on screens of the same height on actual content >>10915669
I always thought it to be silly when people make this comparison of the screen's aspect ratio but not the actual content, but I didn't expected it here, sorry.

Anyways, the original point was that a rotating 10:9 (31:27) seemed not too different from a 1:1, but it is. It's 31:27 3.9" basically mogs the RGB30's 1:1 4". The resolution and being a oled is just the icing on the cake (and the rotating screen, it's silly but it does make a difference in tate)
I'm not particularly excited or expecting it to be anything but a flop, but it's nice seen nice screens emerging from thin air.

>>10915723
Oh that, I was using custom rez and going to label it as NES/PS1, but I again thought everyone just stretches them to 4:3 by default, my bad.

>If you have to buy a grip for your handheld,
I'm not that tripfag but I kinda agree, kinda don't.
I don't got huge or small hands, I got cripple hands but say on the RGB30, when I hold that my two middle finger phalanx/phalange overlap and it's a pain in the ass, put it in a nice grip and just the tips touch together, like when you hold a Vita/TrimUI.
3DS XL also suffers this, there's the overlap but shove that in a grip and it's back to the tips.
Same goes for controllers, hold a DS4/XB1 controller in your hands it'll overlap like an RGB30 if you point your fingers straight but controllers can be smaller because they have bulbous grips that your fingers wrap around where on handhelds it's a slap shape with a screen.

On vertislop your fingers will overlap completely and touch base at your metacarpals. That's no good and that's what cramps ya hand. Fuck vertisloppers.

Well, pretty much every handheld from the main console makers I've ever owned hasn't exactly been comfortable so I don't know what that says about their designs. Vita was so uncomfortable it was the first system I willingly went out of my way to buy a grip for because I was getting massive hand cramps. I only printed this grip because trying to use the thumbsticks on Megaman Legends gave me hand cramps, same with L2/R2. With the grip L2/R2 are super comfy now while the sticks are better overall.
