Is it retro?

Only the first game is, per the current rules.

Yes, but it's not any good.

I wish I could refute this because so much of what it doesis so fun. But after the initial island it really falls apart as it tries to give you missions and weird shit the game can't really handle.

>> No.10906731

Regardless what it is, it was terrible.
There is a precedent for the type of pseudo-ai tamogachi sort of bullshit in retro games like Little Computer People, Creatures etc...
It was a lot of hype and a lot of fail.

>> No.10906738

>>10904348
I was so hyped for this game. Peter Molyneux sold us a lie.

>> No.10906759

i got this at a garage sale as a kid and really liked it.

>> No.10906767

Isn't it notorious for being unplayable on modern systems? For that alone it deserves to be considered retro.

>> No.10906771

>>10904348
It came out in 2001, so yes. Anything up to 2005 is considered retro since Gen 6 consoles are allowed.

Nah, Land 2 is fine, it's basically just an expanded tutorial as most of it is teaching you mechanics outside of the sandbox part.
It's Land 3 onwards where they actually expect you to play a game.

>> No.10906839

It has flaws but I will 1000% play it again over B&W2. That game took literally every wrong lesson from 1 and is just a shitty psuedo-rts/city builder hybrid

>> No.10907143

as a god game sandbox it's fucking brilliant, the problem is it then tries to be a goal-based adventure game and falls to shit.

>Isn't it notorious for being unplayable on modern systems?
Yesn't.
I've run on Win7 and Win10 with no issue, but de-facto graphical settings were stuck on Low no matter what I did.

>Molyneux's original plan was to make five games covering different eras of history, with spirituality declining in each age and the god/creature having to adapt
>tfw no steampunk Black & White game
>tfw no game where you try to get your schizo prophet to found a new religion in the 2020s

I'll trust your memory more than mine since it's been over 20 years, I think you're right though. The beginning was such fun and seemed like there was a cool game ahead then it all kinda went to shit. It should have been more of an RTS and might have worked instead of trying to make 2002 AI do adventure game shit for you.

That start though, when I got to set up a weird sex cult where all my power came from sacrificed babies and my evil goat avitar would eat children which gave him indigestion and then thiw his shit into enemy food stores... those were good times.

>> No.10908526

I'd never really read online how people felt about Black & White, so this thread is really surprising.
I liked this game a lot but I can't lie I never got far in it. Makes me feel validated that it wasn't just kid me being retarded.
Still I liked the first few hours and generally hold B&W in high regard

I've beaten it and I've enjoyed it quite a lot.
Land 3 was obnoxious, though.

>> No.10908810

>>10908696
It was fun, sacrificing babies made you evil but gives tons of God power so my society was set up so the only thing anyone did was fuck and make babies most of whom got burnt in my alatar and I'd use that to make grain and whatnot. It was a wonderful game in a few ways.

I don't criticise your approach, I ended up with a spiky temple by the end of the game too.
IMO it had *the* best morality system that I've ever seen when it comes to gaming.
Evil options are generally easier and more effective, so you're natually turning into a - let's depopulate the enemy village real quick - monster during gameplay.
Most of the games with a morality system tend to reward good behaviour short-term, and it doesn't resemble real life in a slightest.

It made taking over other villages to increase my influence pretty easy too. My creature would throw shit in their food supply that would kill most people then come in with a horde of wolves and cast lightning to light everything on fire. After that the one "good" spell it knew, would summon rain to put out the fires and anyone left alive instantly converted.

>> No.10908829

>>10908824
You can also create a village center with a precise throw.
If I remember correctly, it will instantly create a small area of influence.
Then you can kidnap enemy villagers to sacrifice or convert them.
And you use sacrificial mana to impress them.

I think some guy tried to make a modern indie version of it. Not sure if I saw clips of it here or on /v/, but it looked like shit.

I feel like this is a game that would be fucking incredible to play on a VR headset. Picking up and throwing things was just way too much fun.

A few years back I played this again. Tried to expand the town and cater to their needs and all. But everything requires wood, and villagers chop down wood at an alarming rate. Pretty quickly there's no more wood in the whole map, their needs are unattended and you become evil because of that. I even tried to plant a forest but that takes ages and villagers would chop it down quickly anyway.

I have no idea how people made it to the end. 3rd island is as far as I got

You need to install patches, the game is bugged on release and villagers use WAY more resources than they're supposed to.

This >>10915384. Being a total bastard in the game's world was absolutely hilarious and far beyond reprieve. Trying to take a more "decent" route was painful (but maybe more rewarding?).

Anyway, I was unable to make it very far in the game as a child while having an evil orangutan and tossing my citizens about like it was nobody's business.

It's a shame some creatures are just objectively better than others. Once you get the Lion, you've already won

The one in the Land 1 where some man in unimpressed by your creature?
