DB Final Bout. It's definitely not good but it gives me 20 minutes of fun which is all you need sometimes.

its more challenging then it looks. Maybe not intentionally but theres lots of threats to deal with and outrunning the fish man chasing you is fun

The arcade version of Dragon Buster is way better then the Famicom port.
Try it out if you haven't.
Also, as far as I know, the arcade version is the first game to feature a double jump.

It's also the first game to give the player a health bar.

Space Griffon VF-9. It's kinda-sorta Armored Core meets Resident Evil, and it predates both of them.

>Survival horror before it was really a genre
>No background music anywhere, not even ambience
>You're left with total silence for 90% of the game
>Whenever you see the word 'RECEPTION' pop up, take a breather
>Combat is simplistic, the RPG-esque levelling system barely matters
>Weapon breaking can actually softlock you if you're not careful enough
>Cutscenes can be skipped but you'll miss out on story
>Cutscene art is PC-98 as hell for a good reason: It's actually a full remake of the PC-98 game (HAMLET)
>Voice acting's iffy because 1990s VG dubbing
>Almost all of the VAs are still doing stuff today

>> No.10884814

If I like the game it's not bad, it's just that other people have shit taste and/or suffer from meme opinion.

>SGVF-9 was out in 1995 and AC wasn't out until 1997.
Why would that be an obstruction to the former being like the latter? I don't know about these two in particular, but I don't follow your logic here.

>> No.10887553

>>10886640
If you want direct examples, the basic movement controls (barring look up\down and boosting) are pretty close, and your weapons can also be destroyed like in Silent Line.
Beyond that, I was pointing out how you control a not-really-giant robot as a hired mercenary pilot.

This is actually a spoiler for the game's story, but there's also corporate corruption that wouldn't feel out of place in an AC game, too.

that game is hard as balls but it is sick. i knew about the double jump but health bars too? that game doesn't get enough credit. also loved the ps1 "sequel" dragon valor, even though i wish it was even a fraction as hard as the og.

>post flawed/bad games
I mean... that's mostly gaming in general. There aren't a ton of games that aren't flawed and mostly only the simplest will do what they do damn good - even then they can have room for improvement. Like Tetris is good - but it's not the best version of Tetris, fuck Tetrinet 1 was better even.

it's only flawed in the sense that it's an excellent game in a vacuum but goes against every design principle cherished by elitist shmup trannies who only play slightly reskinned iterations of one danmaku shooter, so it's impossible to discuss it on any shmup forum, and dedicated tyrian forums devolved into only posting about porting the game to increasingly exotic hardware

Chrono Cross. Most people's issues I can't disagree with but I love it in spite of its flaws. Actually I love some of the flaws like too many characters. I love how absolutely batshit it was like the voodoo doll or turnip or that girls dad who was mushroom or the skeleton clown... yeah itd have been better with fucking MAGUS explicitly as Guile with a proper story but there's a goddamn turnip. Yeah everyone in trigger dies but everyone dies fuck it.

Unfortunately the hit detection in the game sucks. But overall it's a solid platformer.
