Honestly pretty mainstream compared to other mediums. There are plenty of people who refuse to watch movies in black and white or music before the 70s. Compare that to Vidya where even the most casual fuck picks up a Namco or Atari arcade game from time to time

I can almost guarantee more people watch black and white movies than play 80s games. Especially the early 80s arcade games, they are the vidya equivalent of silent films in terms of popularity

I don't think it's very mainstream, most normies give zero fucks about video games that are not Fortnite or LoL or whatever the current thing is. Other than that I agree with other anons that retro collecting is common among "geek-type" normies who only play Pokémon and Mario and are just addicted to the feeling of owning rare shit.
Finally you have sane people who only buy the means to play old vidya and little else, which is a niche hobby.

rise of the first commercialized indie games went hand in hand with retro glamorization because all the shit was just copying old games with pixel art and literally everyone was shilling nostalgia on all the popular gaming sites etc. coincidentally when the adjacent scenes like chiptune died overnight and when i personally dropped of anything to do with gaming

at this point it's levelled out and the bandwagon hoppers have largely moved on, though it's never gonna be as niche as it was in the 2000s again, and most of the cohort thats been added to the "retro game fans" bracket are just hyper consumer centric collectors who mostly use it as a status symbol. also old games have been simply been normalized where if at any time they come up it's just seen as a normal thing and not a novelty which is arguably a good thing because it means the attitudes towards it have sufficiently matured and the worst is behind it (of course the ideal would be for the hobby to never have left its proverbial basement so it never needed to deal with that problem to begin with, but you can't have everything)

In fact one of my first approaches to her was because she was posting about wanting to watch megas XLR on a CRT and I sent her a pic of my trinitron.

I collect old video game magazines (pre-00s) and avidly read them, no old game can bring me as much joy. Also I know quite a lot of people who collect video game magazines like me, and most of them are great chaps but none of them actually reads the shit (maybe only some stuff on particular games).
