1086691 No.1086691 [Reply] [Original]

A while back on /v/, I used to share these compilation packs in an attempt to expose /v/'s increasingly younger audience to classic games, and, hopefully, raise the level of video game appreciation across the board.

Naturally, that was like attempting to purify a torrential river of shit that never stops flowing, so I stopped the project. I did, however, complete a handful of compilation packs, and I would like to revive the project to post tribute threads to each of these games on the retro board, and perhaps create more of these compilations moving forward.

For the first order of business, I'd like to post the Chrono Trigger compilation pack. Throughout the thread I will be dumping the artwork contained therein. The full contents of the compilation will be detailed below.

This thread will act as a Chrono Trigger general thread, so feel free to discuss anything and everything about the game and your memories with it.

Here are the links to the compilation. Be sure to download and save BOTH archives, highlight BOTH, and extract BOTH at ONCE.

Part 1: http://www.mediafire.com/?k0gefe4n8aeunkk
Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?xicj41ytq28c8ub

With all that out of the way, let's have a thread to pay tribute to one of the best (arguably the best) RPGs on the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger!

Yeah, I'm doing these on /vr/ not really to expose younger people to these games, but just to pay tribute to these classics with other people that have played them and enjoyed them. So the goal here is slightly different than it was on /v/

Apparently that's a scene from the beta. I think a screenshot of her using it is floating around somewhere on the internet, I'll see if I can't track it down. I'm glad they changed it and gave Lucca the fire spells though, they seem so much more fitting for her.

The game was designed around on the concept art so I guess Marle's details weren't quite nailed down at that point.

The funny part is, the triple-tech between Crono, Frog, and Marle in that concept art is in the game. It's called Arc Impulse and the in-game effect on Crono's sword still shows the fire. It may be a case of the devs going out of their way to match the concept art despite the fact it doesn't make any sense.

You're referring to this shot, specifically.

The screenshots you see on the old magazine scans are a mix of actual screenshots and mock-ups. Mock-ups being scenes that weren't ever programmed into the game but instead were existing art assets just thrown together for the sole purpose of promotional material and nothing more.

Whether this shot and >>1086729 were ever actually intended story-scenes in the game or just mock-ups, we don't know: But the fact they go out of their way to mimic Akira Toriyama's concept art makes me think they're just mock-ups... :( Which sucks, because I would like to believe otherwise that there's a beta prototype still floating around out there somewhere with these scenes coded in.

I'm having an absolute ball. I don't really enjoy typical turn based RPG's but this is really drawing me in. The trial was a fantastic sequence and there are constant little touches that just fill the game with character. I won't lie though, if ever fight was DUNUNUN warp to static battle field with team in a row taking turns to sword a monster I doubt I'd have gotten so far into it. I love the fact that it's not as blatantly rail road-y as some jrpg's I've played, and there seems to be some jabs at the typical JRPG in there from what I can tell. [that factory where they stick you on a conveyor belt and you're dragged through three rooms each containing a fight struck me as a jab against the conventions of the genre, I might be wrong though]

This and the Phantasy Star series are the only combat RPG's I've really enjoyed that I can recall off hand. [and paper mario: thousand year door]

>>1092721
Yeah something about Chrono Trigger seems to be able to hold people's attention, even if they don't necessarily like the turn based playstyle that much. I personally enjoyed how the dual techs and such actually felt like combo attacks, and that the way the game handles kind of makes one think about which they should use for a given situation, or whether it would be smarter to use a dual tech this turn, or just use two individual ones (though again, the gameplay is still fairly simple, yet rather enjoyable). Also probably helps that on the whole, you can actually see (and at times avoid) enemy encounters on the field.

>let's have a thread to pay tribute to one of the best (arguably the best) RPGs on the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger!
I'd like to disagree. While chrono trigger was a good game it wasnt nearly as good as people tend to say. The artstyle is horrible, it seems like many people transfer their (strange) love for dbz to chrono trigger. The timetravel system was also very disapointing, only 5 eras to travel to is lost potential.
The best snes rpg is clearly Terranigma(imo) which induced way more feelings in me and was more fun to play. Sadly rarely anyone outside of eu played it because it was neevr released in us and therefore missed a huge nostalgia market.

Also please condense your chrono trigger threads, there is anotehr one right abouve this thread.

>The artstyle is horrible, it seems like many people transfer their (strange) love for dbz to chrono trigger.

The only time you see that art style is in the portraits for the main cast. The game's art style looks good.

> only 5 eras
But because of that the individual era's felt more developed.

>The best snes rpg is clearly Terranigma[...]Sadly rarely anyone outside of eu played
The irony here is that you are unable to appreciate CT because it wasn't released in your region when you were young.

I played both Terranigma and Chrono Trigger on early emulators and they were both very good, but I'd give the edge to CT for having better character development, story, music, atmosphere. Though I agree Terranigma's gameplay is much more fun. Anyway, the point is moot since Earthbound was the best SNES RPG by far.

Corridors of time definitely. Really good cover btw, thanks. I use to listen to it from time to time.

Which actually does sound a lot if you consider that the majority of the graphics are 16x16 pixels with less than 8-bit colour (at best; in practice they are more likely to use less colour fidelity for things things like sprites because its faster and they don't need many colours anyway).

And the majority of the special effects don't even use images, they are mathematically generated transparent vectors.

The whole point of the limited eras is that there's a story going on through the whole thing. The eras you can access have meaning to them. I thought I liked CT solely on nostalgia, but after not playing it for nearly 10 years I picked it back up and could not put it down until I played through the whole thing. Other games I picked up for nostalgic reasons, but could not get through them.

(That being said, I did not grow up with Terranigma but played it much later on and I thought it was an amazing game. It's one of those titles that sticks with you after it's over.)

Don't feel bad. That might be my favorite game song ever made. I would love to hear it performed by an orchestra. Apparently, the story floating around about To Far Away Times is:
> Mitsuda slept in his studio several nights, and attributed certain songs, such as "To Far Away Times", to inspiring dreams. ... [T]he song was made in dedication to "a certain person with whom I wanted to share a generation."
> Mitsuda returned to watch the ending with the staff before the game's release, crying upon seeing the finished scene.
credit, Wikipedia

So yeah, I'm under the impression that the 2nd quote meant that the ending/To Far Away Times made even Mitsuda cry.

Doesn't sound grand enough to me to be a boss theme, if that makes any sense. It definitely sounds like a latter half/endgame battle theme in my opinion. Like you're nearing the final areas, and it's getting you pumped to keep going. Your characters are strong, and your goal is in sight, you just have to go and finish the job.

I love RPGs that change the battle theme like that towards the end of the game, it always gives them a much more epic feel.

They literally take you to the end of existence and back, and are easily the system's top three RPGs, besides of Earthbound. FFVI is overrated tripe, but that's another topic for another thread

>> No.1125881

>>1125852

depends on your age

trigger is the relevant game

cross is a generic ps1 rpg, and its not even a 'good' one

so by ps1 rpg standards its a 7
by absolute standards its a 4? whatever tedious crap is

but if you are young and liked other ps1 rpgs then you might like it a lot

I can't possibly recommend cross, but I also sort of understand how someone could play it

understand that all the innovations of trigger were instantly adopted by all other rpgs, so anyone who is young will find it quite difficult to understand what was innovative or impressive about it

>> No.1125932

>>1125852
Cross doesn't go very heavily into Trigger and what happened. Knowing the general plot is all that's really necessary.

My main problem with Cross is that there are too many extra characters. Many of them don't differ from each other in a very meaningful way except they might have a different element and be more strength than magic. Many of the characters never felt that useful to me, and a few just appear and have no real use.
Contrast this with Trigger having a small set of characters, all differing greatly, and each having strengths. Each is memorable right off. Some people might argue that this character is that character, but the mere fact that they can argue about it and that there is an actual debate means the characters are somewhat balanced.

Cross also felt to me like it was trying to have too many subplots that detracted from a main theme.

All in one game. My proof is that Chrono Cross is the only game with all of these things in one game, making it unique and therefore not generic.

When most people accuse RPGs of being generic, it's usually concerning the typically drawn out, shitty plots that both WRPGs and JRPGs utilize. I haven't play Cross, so I have no reason to say that it has this, but I know a huge reason people stay away from RPGs are the really plot heavy but substance-less plots.

There's the Woolsey original and then there's the DS retranslation on the DS and iOS/Android.

The Woolsey translation takes some liberties, but it's great. It renames a few characters, cuts some dialogue, but one thing it keeps perfectly intact is the soul of the game. The retranslation is fine, it uses quite a bit of woolseisms, because those were jsut so good, it doesn't omit anything, but it's not better than the SNES translation.

In short, the Woolsey translation (1995 SNES US release, PSOne updated port) is a bit imprecise, but still professional, of high quality and is lots of fun.
The retranslation is a bit more precise, but slightly less energetic.

Both are good. There's no real need to prefer any one from another.

And then there's the unofficial retranslation that keeps 100% of text, uses the original Japanese names (Magus is called "Maou-sama", lit. His Magesty the Demon Lord). The translator himself explains that the translation is almost literal by design. It's not for enjoying the game, it's there for borderline scientific precision for "future analysis" and things.
