10854932 No.10854932[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

I see a lot of people around here saying weird things like Japanese don't emulate or that Japanese people will go to prison for several years just for downloading a single rom file.

Actually, retro gamers in Japan do quite a bit of piracy and there's also a large community for ROM hacks and fan games. Chink handhelds are also very popular among retro gamers in Japan right now and I often see people posting about them on Twitter. There's also a sizeable community of people using MiSTer, Analogue pocket, and similar devices. Hell, even the Polymega has a bit of a following here.

Japan had a robust swap culture before 2020; scarcity wasn’t really a thing for most games so something like piracy seemed unnecessary and mean-spirited. This of course changed when the stimmy checks came and foreigners were scooping up remaining stock by the crateload. Japan now has the same problem as the rest of the world where certain games are simply inaccessible unless you’re a trust fund baby, and with that, their attitudes with piracy followed.

It's mostly the pretense from retarded shills on /v/ that you're talking about. You'll usually see it in the same sentence as "THEY RUN COMPUTAS...WITH OLD VERSIONS OF WINDOWWS!!!!" and "THEY STILL USE FACKS MACHINES!!!" but as someone with regular interactions with Japanese dudes yeah they pirate games, no they're not retarded and publicly talking about it, yeah they know about mods, they know about chink clones, they know about chink repros, they do all the same shit we do here. If you're ever seeing it, it's just anti-Japanese sentiment from infiltrator types trying to attack something 4chan generally likes by framing them in a bad light.

NTA and I'm not Japanese but I spent 13 years living and working in Japan and one of my fondest memories was helping a co-worker build a desktop PC with a Radeon 6850 to emulate PSX, PS2 games and get into PC gaming because he disliked scaling on modern TVs.
After work we'd go to a bar for a couple of drinks then wander back to his place and play SMT III Maniax in high resolution on his TV before I'd wander to 7/11 and back home. He later ended up playing Witcher 2 and enjoyed it.

ROM hacks get posted primarily to the author's personal sites and then shared elsewhere like Twitter.
There is an entire offline community around fan games/fan comics/fan anime and the creators get together to hold events where they sell their stuff for money and the big corpos are cool with it. If you miss the events you can usually buy the games at stores that specialize in that stuff.

On this topic, there's some Japanese computer magazines that dabble into this "taboo", such as iP! and Windows100%, though both have ceased publication now.
Speaking of Windows100%, they also used to crib Vocaloid/MMD/Utau stuff online to their CDs in style of Doom/Quake shovelware CDs.

anyone who knows anything about the early jap micro scene knows better. people were making their own games, ripping published games and reselling them, selling hardware to rip NES games to floppy, porting games they didnt have the license to and selling them blackmarket, writing hacking zines, making highly demented text-based torture/rape sims etc
lots of very illegal shit, right downtown
i know for a fact there was a pretty thriving blackmarket meet-up in shibuya at least once a month for years and years back in the 80s/early 90s. and its also an open secret that some of those guys went on to make some VERY big name games that we all grew up playing

>Nintendo has Japan by the balls
Funny you mentioned this. A company called Colopl made a mobile game that had a virtual joystick as its controls. With its immense success and millions of dollars, Nintendo eventually sued them many years later claiming they invented touch controls for games and a virtual joystick, and their proof was their patents for the DS of all things. Despite Colopl having a good lawyer and showing them over 50 games that existed like this, which should’ve voided Nintendo’s patents or at the very least dropped the case, they lost and had to pay something like 30 million dollars and that doesn’t count the other offenses. Because of this, Nintendo can quite literally sue any company RIGHT now with a mobile game that involves touch controls or a virtual joystick. Quite literally the most insane lawsuit I’ve read in my life
