Based

Just got done playing through the Ys games for Pc Engine (besides 3). They feel like if zelda was created by someone who had only made shmups before (pretty fitting for the console) and now I absolutely love them. I thought the bump combat would suck but there's something innately satisfying about it once you get into the game's rhythm - I think the developer's even likened it to the feeling of satisfaction you get from the simple popping of bubble wrap. And while the bump combat is simple, it really shines during boss fights where timing, speed and pattern recognition are everything. All this in an incredible aesthetic package complete with cool lore, great visuals and 10/10 music. I really wish I found this series earlier as they scratch an itch I didn't know I had.

3's good on Turbo, though.

they're on my back burner as I'm just going through shit tonnes of shooters on the thing at the moment.
I feel it's worth just for the soundtracks of the CD-engine versions alone, compared to the SNES version it's just insane.
I wish i'd found the pc engine earlier instead of relegating it to a weird weeaboo console no one really cared about.

Didn't have one until 2012, it's become one of my favorite consoles of all-time, I can see why they were number two in the console war in Japan against Nintendo, it is overall a much better console than the Genesis/Mega Drive.

much better for shooters and RPGs
genesis gets the nod for platformers though

Dunno about that, there's a lot of great platformers on the PC Engine people outside of Japan rarely talk about. Bonk is brought up a lot in the U.S. but it's barely a blip in Japan. Outside of Dracula X there's New Adventure Island, Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu, the Shubibinman games, Son Son II, Legend of Hero Tonma, Kaze Kiri, Fausette Amour, Liquid Kids, Ninja Spirit, etc. Feel like it holds it's own quite well with platformers.

gonna just give my thoughts on these
also...never been a big fan of the valis series. the only one thats kinda ok is the valis 1 remake
>bonk
first one is good, 2nd one is excellent, 3rd one is a disaster. granted, im also not a fan of super bonk. i think super bonk 2 is heavily overlooked and it takes some of the good ideas from bonk 2 and expands on them. i think bonk 2 is still best in the series though

ultimately, sonic series is better than the bonk series, but bonk 2 is well worth several playthroughs
>rondo
no brainer
>new adventure island
best in the series desu, yes its fantastic
>jackie chan
good, not as good as NAI though (same dev)
>shubibinman games
all 3 of them feel...half baked. 3 had the most potential but literally feels like a beta game. the best one is zero on snes and that one is polished but short
>sonson ii
truly underrated, closest thing to a black tiger sequel. i wish capcom had more direct involvement in pce development
>tonma
super fun but also very short
>kaze kiri
10/10 graphics and bosses but the stages are actual dogshit. if someone hacked this into a pure boss rush game i would like it more
>fausette amour
the "bionic commando" mechanic is hardly used, kind of a one and done game. like kaze kiri, another very late pce super cd release that feels kinda half baked
>liquid kids
agreed, fantastic. and much better than the disastrous new zealand story port
>ninja spirit
yeah this is fantastic, still holds up great. final level with the ninja pit is unfair though, takes a few tries to "know the pattern"

i think outside of these, the ones that still hold up incredibly well are both legendary axe games (1st one destroys nes castlevania), parasol stars, and momotaro katsugeki

>Was supposed to be released by Nintendo under the name Neo Famicom/Neo NES.
>Ended up getting rejected because Nintendo was making their own 16-Bit system.
>Sold off to NEC because Nintendo themselves suggested them.
>Only real difference between Hudson's original pitch and what was released by NEC was the video DAC was external, allowing a 21-Bit address bus through the PPU so it had slightly better graphics (256 colors out of 4096 per layer, 2 background layers, 1 window layer and 128 sprites, 32 sprites per scanline), more ram (256KB work ram and 128KB video) and proper carts with battery back up support that can take up to 4MB (2MB PNG and 2MB CHR).
>Nintendo left Hudson and NEC alone for 2 years because everyone knew it was time for next gen.
>Super NES ended up getting to 1990 delayed because of Modes 5, 6 and especially 7, sound ended up being unsold SPC700 chips meant for the Sony NEWS computers, sound was meant to be a modded YM2164 and a updated version of the 2A03 built into the 5A22, the later was incomplete but it's sound hardware does work, just without DPCM support), it was meant for a early 1987 release in Japan and 1988 release in North America.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHPgbuM3Yo8
>By 1989 with the SuperGrafx and Turbo Express Nintendo ended up sabotaging them in favor of allowing Hudson to have Game Boy and Super NES dev kits and allowing NEC to make the DSP line of chips for the Super NES.
>By 1990 everyone jumped ship back to Nintendo.
>3rd party support was still good until 1994 where Sony took every 3rd party.
>NEC was left with otaku slop, the stuff both Nintendo, Sony and even Sega rejected.
>Nintendo then later sabotaged the PC-FX (was meant to be faster, more ram, have a proper sound chip (the YMF278) and have a 3D GPU that ended up only being used in the PC-FXGA) in exchange of allowing NEC to make the Virtual Boy's SOC chip and the N64's CPU as well as allowing Hudson to have Virtual Boy and N64 dev kits.

Part 2.
>Meanwhile North America barely got any 3rd Party support because of Nintendo.
>By the time Nintendo's monopoly was lifted it was too little too late for North America.
>Barely existed in PAL markets.
>3rd Party support for the PC-FX was even worse then it was during the last few years of the TurboGrafx-16.
>PC-FX never got released in North America and PAL markets, making matters worse for NEC.
>NEC became 3rd Party by 1998.
>Spin off it's software branch in 2004.
>Hudson got absorbed by Konami in 2012.
>Konami now own the Hudson library.
>Spin off it's consumer hardware branch in 2014 (BIGLOBE).
>Now reserved on industry hardware
>Non 1st Party Hudson games are now own by M2 (excluding arcade ports, PC-88/98 ports (sold back to their original companies) and the Puyo Puyo (Sega)/Madou (D4/Sega) ports).
Sad, the TurboGrafx-16 was extremely underrated.
