Finished requiem as Niko from Bring Your Own Class.
Here's my thoughts
>Hatchet is an ok emergency weapon, the fact you can carry three hatchets and regen them is fine
>Shears are an okay option for conserving ammo
>Scissors are okay versus low health enemies, the secondary deals ok burst damage
>Vlad-1000 nailgun is best weapon he has with very useful alt-fire
>The oneshot revolver is powerful, but I only used it three times because it costs 10 shells to fire and takes four bars of your power meter to recharge
>The pancakes are okay, they deal 80 damage per hit but has projectile travel time making it hard to sniper far away enemies
>Molotovs are good versus tight grouped enemies, the alt-fire throws three molotovs with cost of one
>The laser rifle deals good DPS and holds 100 ammo in the mag
>The BFG is quite powerful but range is short
Gonna be playing through some other wad but this time as the Postal Dude

One of the ones I remember enjoying was the final boss of Abyss of Pandemonium, an unofficial expansion for Quake.

Took me a couple tries to beat it, and I felt good when I finally did. It didn't feel cheap or unfair, and every time I died, I felt like I could absolutely do it.

Tried Psychic mod with In City Only WAD.
>Infinite ammo but every gun is a peashooter against anything tougher than an imp
>Same for psychic powers with plasma being the only somewhat exception
>Mancubi and Revenants are kicking my ass, my arsenal sucks!
>Closer look at the shop reveals that i have an access to Tome of Power for both weapons and psychic powers
>Stopped hoarding all of my blood monies for upgrades and started spending them on powerups to survive
>Powered up weapons and powers are actually fun to use
>Finally got enough blood monies for upgrades
>Having a great time
Can see now why this gameplay mod is on that pic. Loving it now as compared to some of the other overpowered gameplay mods i tried this one actually makes you put a bit of work towards becoming powerful.
The most useful powers i found to be plasma for tougher far away enemies and eath spikes for crowds. Really like using freeze power too, it makes enemies drop extra blood money and it's overcharged version is pretty useful against Cyberdemons/Mechanical Masterminds.

Just reached the second chapter of the In City Only WAD and got all of my progress reset. Not scared of being unapgraded anymore because now i know what i should be doing in the early game.

Nah. It's a big collaborative project of mainly newbies to Doom modding who came together to just add whatever the fuck they wanted. It's changed a fair amount over the years but in its current state it's pretty fucking great. It's just alongside the various freaks and OCs you have a few other characters like Sir Dan from Medievil, Quote from Cave Story, the Heavy from TF2, AVGN, Niko from Oneshot, Rayman, Ash from Evil Dead, Homer Simpson, and Tony Soprano.
It helps that the OCs are pretty good too.

Keeping it grounded in doom means that I will keep it mechanically and aesthetically doom. Dont worry that there wouldnt be racism. You can just get it from the mega.
I bought it from Steam 10 years ago and after finding out the version on there was shit and discovering this general I just ripped out the Iwads and shoved them in a Doom folder along with ZDL and all the source ports I've been using. Technically the versions of Doom I've been running are completely legit thanks to this (and are from before they changed the health pick ups to that shitty pill symbol) but it's not like it matters. The money doesn't go to the original team anymore, it goes to Bethesda and maybe nu-id, neither of which deserve a penny.

For the first time in my adult life, I played and beat Doom 93' for the first time.
I hate the grip this game has had on me the last few days. The sheer space of the movement, getting a read on enemies and perfectly dodging their telegraphed attacks, John Romero's perfect level design filled to the brim with secrets (thus making me wanna replay it all over again), the fine tuning and placements of enemies, when it's time for fun or time to gun. This game rocks so much. I was expecting to like it, not immediately replay it again on UV to try and beat it faster.

Doom has remained popular 30 years later for good reason.
Doom 2's level design isn't as good, but the super shotgun and new enemies are fantastic. I also recommend trying to pistol start the original with no saves. It'll be easy outside of a couple of levels, but it's still fun to do. Most modern source ports have an option of a dedicated button for pistol starting. I use Nugget and hit INSERT every new map to pistol start. Nothing like completing a level with just the weapons and equipment it provides.

I've played Quake 2 a bunch of times since the olden days but before the Remaster every time it was without music. I turned the music down quite low but having it in the first place makes a huge impact on the feel of Quake 2.

And Ground Zeroes continues to be really good! I think in base game Quake 2 it felt like some maps were really sparse with details and too long but I really like how GZ feels about as ''lived in'' as it can and has comfy little setpieces like the shuttle / train you ride even if it's just for a little bit. You peace out of zones before you get tired of them unlike Q2 where you're already tired of the Zone but gotta walk through it and then across it and back again multiple times. The New Order is solid. Yea it's not perfect and it gets a lil bit preachy at times but the core is solid. The levels have old school feeling secrets, the levels feel awesome and lived-in enough you'd want to live and work in most of them, the combat sections usually have nice dynamic to them and you can expect being flanked / ambushed etc.
Weapons have incredible feedback for sound, visual, reaction of enemies and environment, you can dual wield most of them and it just feels... cool.
The alternate history 1960s is also a real jam, there aren't a lot of bits of where my immersion was broken in any major way when it comes to the setting itself.

I get the feeling like I should play each level twice for the first time, if that makes sense. Flare gun isn't a direct weapon. In early game you stick some flares and back off. Or give them a few pokes with the pitchfork. Once you get other guns you can safely disregard the flaregun's primary and just use the cracked out altfire when you have a surplus of flares.
Blood's Cultists are insanely aggressive, you just need to respond to it with your own high aggression.

In the second map, right after you get the shotgun, you get to a long 'corridor' in the corner of which lies one cultist - with no prior knowledge of his location, you will lose more than 50 HP. What I did was I played with settings and restarted the first level like 3 times until I found the right balance for me.

You can tweak it so some things are harder and others are easier.

Easier:
- you can replace hitscan with projectiles. I did this for the first few maps until I got a feel for the cultists behavior then switched back to hitscan.
- there's an option to add a short window of invulnerability when you get hit once, so enough time to reposition yourself, less instadeath bullshit.
- the pitchfork now has a charge attack; the longer you charge it, the more damage dealt

Harder:
- to counterbalance those, you can turn up enemy count and aggressiveness to extra crispy, and keep damage values to lightly broiled or well done (or lower, if you really struggle); can also disable savescumming

This is probably the biggest issue? Blood has its own rhythm, you do have to move fast BUT you also have to know when to slow down. I play it almost like a tactical shooter or survival horror.

Check every corner, slice the pie
Crouch
Crowd control, take it slow, don't aggro everyone at once, bait those closest to you
Preserve ammo; zombies get pitchforked; hunt for secrets for extra ammo and powerups
Suspicious corner? Dynamite!

Weapons:
Dynamite: get used to its throwing range and quirks (great in open space, but risky in corridors)
Flare gun: shoot once, then hide and wait til they burn; keep the alt fire for crowds of cultists
Tommy gun: stun locks cultists; alt fire wastes ammo but deals more dmg

Once you get a feel for cultists' rhythm then you can start hopping around like a madman

I played Serious Sam: First Encounter for the first time for some hours and it made a positive impression on me at first, but soon afterwards the game fell apart.
To me, the game was the most fun when you are inside a building, fighting enemies up close in a room with some thought put into level design. I quit the game after I had to go through 2 levels (10 and 11, I think) of mostly flat ground, hordes of the same enemies mindless running at you, and sometimes scorpions/green demons would spawn out of nowhere and hit you a few times before you could see it.
And these levels are fucking long man, I gave up after the game took the ammo out of most of my weapons and I had to fight enemies while walking this long corridor to a palace, only for there to be yet another "spawn the same wave of enemies for 4 minutes before advancing to the next wave." Also, the double shotgun feels so bad to use.
I understand the appeal for some might be the power fantasy of mowing down a fuck ton of enemies, but certain aspects of the game feel so clunky and stiff that it doesn't feel satisfying. Anyone else felt like this while playing this game?

Yeah that's probably my only big gripe with TFE/TSE. Shotguns drop off the further you get in the game. If the base weapon swap speed was a little bit faster then shotguns would have a better niche in the later levels as tools for emergencies.

Been doing a lot of boring under the hood shit with prepping Kustam's staff to use inheritance from his pistol to make it easier for state jumping nonsense, but I also went back and made his kicks a little snappier. Though I still need to go back and give the double kick a little more oomph.

Also been mulling over the staff in general. I had discussed this with a friend about wanting to make the reload action for the staff have Kustam bang one end of the staff on the ground to dispose of spent cartridges, now I'm wondering if it should even eject casings at all. I'm probably overthinking this shit too much but when you're doing a concept as dumb as a stick needing ammo, you gotta make sure to do it right to make it cool. If I go forward with the banging on the ground thing, I could give him an upgrade that weaponizes it by making it put out a disc of repulsion like effect, that might be cool.

Iirc in the first book the teleporters that pit stopped inter-dimensionally could only transport organic material, so whoever went in came out naked.
I don't know why cotton clothes or whatever wouldn't come though, but human hair did fine. Maybe they had to be tuned.
At least one set of clothes did come through on two humans that got fused together, I assume by the teleporter, but I think the explanation was that the demons were fucking with Our Hero and his not-girlfriend.

So, i finally started a playthrough with BYOC. Couldn't find a fitting WAD so Gammu will have her first adventure in UAC Ultra.
Observations on her
>Her kick is overpowered, conserving ammo/mana is not that big of an issue with it.
>Poison spell(replaces chaingun) is way too busted.Both primary and charged attack permastaggers enemies including Archviles.
>Picking up a supershotgun allows to perform a summon spell with an altfire. Only the basic frost spell(replaces pistol) has actual summon that fights with you.
>Potions give you useful staff like bonus damage or healing most of time. There is a small 10% chance of screwing you over by giving you a nasty debuff like receiving more damage.
She is indeed good but i feel a bit dirty using her poison spell.

I like Postal Dude's desert eagle, deals 20 damage and is fairly accurate.
Autoshotty is good too, a bit inaccurate at longer ranges but that's to be expected. Deals 50 damage if all pellets hit.
Fornicator deals 300 damage if all pellets hit, good weapon.
The LMG is fairly inaccurate and deals lower damage than pistol, best used in short to medium range.
Rocket launcher is good with the alt-fire dealing increased damage but it doesn't explode right away.
The napalm launcher is a good crowd control weapon.

I've played it a few times as a novelty. The bottom screen isn't a map in the 3DS port like it was on the original DS, but it does have programmable buttons that can be used for weapon switching. It supports the analog nub for turning, which is nfity if you don't want to use touch screen aiming.

One of the problems with Duke's writing was that that era, late 00s to early 2010s were meme wise a complete nothingburger. If it was the 00s you could've gone all in on Bush era memes and done some fun GWOT memes and the Master Chief joke would've also hit harder. Feel myself like an idiot for not thinking of this sooner. Really wanted to try Acelleroid Booster for quite some time and this WAD is actually perfect for it.

Had a blast replaying the first few levels with this mod, figuring out the weapons and finding stuff i missed.

Yeah it felt both thematically right as well as able to handle the vast number of mobs it starts to throw at you quite early into the maps.

Right now I've been spitballing a design where the gun has a notable compensator under the barrel, and then the gun snaps upright and deploys a baton. This ties neatly into my idea of making his melee require reloads if it's just using the same magazine as the gun itself. Plus it means I can just make the charge attack for the baton gun snap back into the gun and use whatever he's currently carrying for a subweapon.
That and it's Tokusatsu as hell and I fucking love dumb transforming weapons.

Psychic mod on the other might not have been the most perfect mod for it in retrospective. The beginning is very rough and the first chapter ends in player's death which resets all of your progress forcing you to rely on buying powerups again before you get your crucial upgrades back.
Once you get your upgrades it's a blast to play tho.

Speaking of those pilebunkers from Combined_Arms. I've been thinking about making that the starting weapon for the Blastmaster set and tweak it just a little to where it works like weapons from Secret of Mana/Evermore. So like if you just held the attack button you'd just keep punching things, but holding off for a moment for a full charge would fire the two little pilebunkers as a projectile. Might remove the ice beam too.

I don't know about piercing. I'll need to figure that out, and a new chainsaw tier item. Most likely some sort of stacking passive. But that's not for awhile, GMOTA stuff first.
Though I might recycle the ice beam somewhere else, the King's Court set might be a good fit for it in the plasma gun slot. Maybe take a note from EDF 5's Mag Blasters: Have the beam start off strong and then it peters out as the battery depletes.

There's pc beta on Nightdive discord. It's certainly the worst official release, but has some intresting stuff like some new enemies, some new maps, and very remixed maps. Very different experience from the pc campaign. You might want to check it out, if you want more Quake 2.
