Sometimes I find myself wanting to try a retro game that isn't all the known classics that you find in every "best retro games" tier list, but finding games can be difficult, so I thought this thread could be a fun idea!

Basic premise: Anons post the kinda games they're looking for, and other anons can throw recommendations based on those posts! Alternatively, anons can throw in suggestions if they feel like they found a hidden gem other anons may like.

For the sake of ease of use, you can use this as a template:

>Desired genre(s):
>Desired platform(s):
>The kind of elements you're looking for:
>The kind of elements you're not looking for:
>Examples of the kind of game you're looking for (if you have any)

Also, if you make recommendations that require/are better played with a mod or a patch (like a translation patch, bug fixes, etc), please mention/link them in your post!

If the general takes off I may make a proper OP, if not, eh, didn't hurt to give it a try

I rarely see anyone talk about this one: The Magic of Scheherazade on NES. Basically a dev going "What if we copied both Zelda AND Dragon Quest at the same time!?" but doing a good job of it. Large number of secrets, multiple classes, unique formation based battle system, and unique dungeons kept me very entertained as a kid.

Anyone who likes classic Castlevania games should also play the old Ghost'n Goblins games. Maybe this one is obvious, so they should also play ActRaiser 2 and Maximo - Ghosts to Glory for a 3D take

If you like the hybrid Culture Brain style, check out the Super Chinese aka Little Ninja Bros series

Downhill Domination on PS2; try it if you haven't.

>> No.10829280

Oops, I missed the part about you're being interested in Japanese games. Downhill Domination is quite obviously Western-developed. Then maybe try Ghost in the Shell or Strider 2 on PS1 if you haven't. (Both are maybe too well-known for this list.)

Try Katamari Damacy (and the sequel We Love Katamari), every level has you rolling a ball around to pick stuff up, bigger the ball gets the more you can roll, and you gotta get to a certain size before the timer's out. It's a good chill game. Has good current-gen remasters too, though the original PS2 games play really well. Not JP only, but very japanese

Robin Hood for the NES. Really good licensed game that does a lot of cool things on the NES.

Honestly one of my all time childhood games. Never watched the movie for decades but this was such a unique experience. Needed a real save system though, the level select code is broken sometime and you'll start sections of the game without essential progression items (silver dagger for giant skeleton rings a bell). The variation between duels, big open melee battles, and zelda-style exploration was really creative.

Use the quarterstaff on the boar.
