New SMB-CD demo just dropped
Truly an interesting animal here, essentially an alternate history if the "Nintendo Playstation" was released and there was a Sonic-CD type Mario game for it. Besides using redbook CD audio, it also opts for mode-0 SNES graphics, which consists of 4 scrollable background planes of 4 colors each, instead of the usual 16 color variants that most games used, a very uncommon choice in the SNES' lifetime. The sprites also stick to this 4 color limitation, giving it a really unique art style. Got my eye on this one...

well it's cool to have the multiple parallax layers i guess, which you cannot do with mode 1, and the art assets *should* be way easier to make. to me, it almost approximates the more limited color choices of the Genesis / Sega-CD, in my head anyway...
i think it's neat to get weird and experimental, but yes there's a good reason why mode 0 wasn't really used commercially... only a fool would argue that 4 colors looks objectively better than 16 colors.

>> No.10821970

>>10821956
>well it's cool to have the multiple parallax layers i guess, which you cannot do with mode 1
You can have up to 3 and then you still have tricks like line scrolling, sprites, etc. to fall back on for more parallax.
>the art assets *should* be way easier to make.
If anything they're more difficult to make as you need to really pick your colors well and you're limited to 4 colors per tile. It's like doing NES graphics with the SNES master palette.
> it almost approximates the more limited color choices of the Genesis / Sega-CD, in my head anyway...
It's worse than the Genesis because the Genesis still has 16 colors per tile, even if it only has 4 palettes.

>> No.10821973

there's honestly nothing here i don't agree with, but i like seeing the hardware stretched in unique ways.
Considering you have 64KB of V-RAM, which you ALSO had to share with the SPC-700 sound chip, in theory you could load an absolute TON of graphics since they are all 4 color 2bpp and you don't have to share it with instruments for the music since the CD-audio is being used; though of course you still need SFX. This mode opens up different options creatively, which i think is cool, so i'll leave it at that. Good day sir.

>Considering you have 64KB of V-RAM, which you ALSO had to share with the SPC-700 sound chip
This is false. VRAM and Audio RAM are separate.
>you could load an absolute TON of graphics since they are all 4 color 2bpp
Which isn't really an issue as you can update your background tiles in VRAM per frame as you need them. The more limiting factor for VRAM is sprites which are limited to 16KB, which Mode 0 wont help there as sprites are still 4bpp.

A PS2 game I wanted to create a patch for is commonly distributed as a bin/cue file instead of an iso, including the info on redump.
It seems like there's little to no support for editing ps2 bin files though, so I'm kind of at a loss on how to actually release the final patch.

To work with the game I converted the bin to an iso, but if I were to then convert that iso back to a bin to make a patch for the original file, the resulting patch would be quadruple the size necessary. Should I just tell people, "Hey, convert the game to an iso first" in a readme file or something? Or is there some way to directly replace files in a bin/cue that actually works so I could avoid this mess?

It feels like rom hacking beyond cartridge based media is a total nightmare.

Bruh a real physical prototype exists, this was an actual engineered and built device and business deal between Nintendo and Sony, in which Nintendo backed out last minute to partner with Phillips to develop the CD-i for some god awful reason. The "MSU-1" homebrew chip is based on the actual specs of this actual machine.
Sony was absolutely FURIOUS that Nintendo backed out of the deal last minute, and went on their own to make their own obscure little indie gaming machine.,. it's called the... uhh... (checks notes) ...Sony Playstation apparently
Anyway, gosh, i've been playing this demo on SD2SNES / CRT and the whole 4 color vibe with CD-Audio feels like an unreleased late 80s console from an alternate universe. i LOVE the art direction. to all the "muh 16 colerz" whiners this hack whisks my soul away to a mandela effect reality in which i truly feel like i'm playing a unique piece of hardware that is not the SNES. i know what the SNES can do, every game and their mother has 4bpp 16 colors, this takes me to a magical alternate reality which i can't really say about other hacks, even the good ones like Super Metroid Subversion still feel like Super Metroid. This silly demo is AMAZING and i am head over heels in love with the vibe and aesthetics. Play the damn thing. That is all. Rant over.

it wasn't nintendo the one backing up it was sony with their "we want to make interactive movies and a movie experience of games,we need you to increase censorship" bullshit.
what sony did is similar to what square soft did
>get funding of nintendo
>instead of developing something for nintendo make other stuff for other company
>betray and backstab the one supporting you.
what sony did was more like
>we got all this money from nintendo
>let's spend all that money developing our own console
>let's betray nintendo at the end just making irrational demands and we will get our own console.
in fact the reason the ps1 doesn't have a 2D gpu is because that was the upgraded gpu of the snes which got added to the mini version of snes making it a real 32 bit console (leaving ps1 with 3d graphics gpu only).

ah, that's an interesting bit of fanfiction, maybe a little bit unhinged but either way it does somewhat match up to the specs of the actual Nintendo Playstation prototype / MSU-1, enough so that i can play it on my real SNES.
Also the NES can actually use SNES controllers, there is nothing stopping it except extra polling of the buttons in software. I'm willing to bet backward compatibility was in the works early on but was quickly abandoned after Nintendo realized all of the ways that the poor NES was abused into doing things it was never meant to do lol.
picrel i do in fact use an SNES controller for NES games with a cable i dun made and it's amazing.

new and unique experiences in gaming were all the rage in those days, expansion chips made those possible. the only glimpse i've felt with that feeling lately is Palworld when i get to help my "pokemon" actually battle with a gun in my hand lol, but like, tons of games like that back then

What? That sort of maximalism only proves my point. I know you're doing a hurrdurr SNES CPU slow thing but
A) people did their damnedest with it, the whole "teehee it's so le retro and minimalist and indie" mindset wasn't a thing, Earthbound aside, and even that had some wild battle backdrops and great sound chip usage.
B) outside of the shitty CPU and horizontal resolution SNES was a cutting edge home console
This thing looks worse than any proper Mario entry on the SNES and would not have been used to push a CD addon.

That's one way to look at it, but another way to look at it is that by using an enhancement chip, you're now adding extra hardware that does things beyond what the original hardware did. Which can be considered not doing the best you can with the hardware.
>I know you're doing a hurrdurr SNES CPU slow thing
Not at all. Not intentionally, at least.
>This thing looks worse than any proper Mario entry on the SNES and would not have been used to push a CD addon.
Maybe if it were for the SNES you would be right, but this is meant to be a NES game, if it were using enhancements to push beyond NES's limits, in an alternate universe where Ninendo tried to capitalize on the fact that the Famicom remained relevant long after the Super Famicom released. And you can be damn sure they'd use Mario to sell it.

Hard break. I was rereading the posts to better be in the conversation and I realized I misread the post where anon says learn to read.

Kind of neat. The 4 scrolling layers of background art is something they ended up including in the SNES, which is what mode 0 is. But very few games actually did this on account of the gfx having to conform to NES limitations. It's something I always felt like had a lot of potential, especially when combined with HDMA effects and gradients.

the 4 color 2bpp lmit? yes. it should be noted that you can pick from a full 16-bit 65,536 different colors for palettes rather than the 50 something colors the NES has to work with. Hell, even the Atari 2600 had 128 actual usable colors lol. The Genesis only has like 512 possible colors i think, so it's still way better in that aspect.

>> No.10832615

>>10831887
I mean I will be an asshole and point out that you can abuse DMA to get 4096 simultaneous colors, but it's unfortunately not usable on emulators so realistically you're working with a palette of 64 from 512.

I'm saying there's a way to download books from archive.org. I'll also say it's very easy. Whether you can read books is a different story.
>All the 68000 books I found don't let you do it.
That's entirely a (You) problem. Frankly I've never heard of anyone else getting filtered by this. I have dozens, possibly hundreds of books I've downloaded from archive.org.
