Install portmaster, use it to install the GTA3 port files, copy the game files from the original Steam game into the proper folder in your ports folder.
The GTA3 remake files won't work, and you can't buy the OG GTA3 on steam anymore, so unless you already bought it, you'll have to pirate it.

It's a Linux port of the game so it runs smoothly at full 720x720 resolution

It doesn't matter how good it is at emulating 3 systems if even the cheapest chinkheld will give you 99% of that experience with 3 minutes of tinkering for half the price and much bigger library with better OS. It cannot compete with other handhelds. It's only advantage is it's meme ppi and cartridge compatibility. Unless someone has severe autism about "muh accuracy" I would not recommend Analogue Pocket. Played Final Fantasy 1 + 2 Dawn of Souls on the Ayaneo Pocket Air due to being a GBA bab. It was lovely, and I'm glad that OLED screens are finally becoming more common on Android handhelds.

I love the 3d effect on my new 3ds xl. it makes the games more immersive and I can't wait to get VirtualBoy running on there. I didn't mean to get into 3ds games but the tech was so fun to play I now have more 3ds than ds titles

I mean it's powerful enough it runs almost every possible title on every available emulator out there, it only struggles with the Switch library for obvious reasons.

They'll keep making better chips but it's realistically going to be years before we get X360/PS3/WiiU emulators on android, so we'll probably be stuck to devices with Odin2-tier capabilities for a good while.
I don't see how you can substantially improve on it, really what can you do? Make the screen bigger/higher res/OLED? Make it thinner? Just make it cheaper?
The hardware can and will improve but the software just isn't there, and the vidya experience is going to be roughly the same in terms of emulation and library.

Pretty much. Unless you're into cawadooty mobile or you really want 4x PS2/GC emulation, there just isn't much else that can take advantage of the power of the Odin 2. Even with the Switch library it seems like the main issue was down to the state of the emulator than it was the hardware.

We've seen that FPGA isn't flawless reproduction thanks to the funnyplaying GBC struggling with some games, so it's not that. Emulators for most 2D consoles (nes, snes, gba, etc) have 15ms of input delay AT MOST which is less than a single frame, so it's not that. 2D console emulation is reliable and stable enough that it's accepted in professional speedrunning, so it's not that.

I just want to know what makes FPGA so good that it's worth charging 3x the cost of an emulation device with the same capabilities, cause I genuinely don't know what the hype is.

If you look at frametiming, emulation gets hiccups where there’s a sudden glitch or instantaneous hang, so frames aren’t consistently timed (which doesn’t matter for something like an rpg but can be annoying if not debilitating with action/arcade games). Sprites can be drawn kinda weird too, with either glitches or colour issues (getting into autism territory), and a big one is that sound reproduction is usually pretty bad.
Quality of FPGA cores matter though and chinkshit cores from funnyplaying are going to only be as good as their weakest link. FPGA has a higher ceiling for performance but it doesn’t magically lift the floor.

i feel like this part of shank's virtual boy handheld build explains it well. you can change how the game is loaded, how the sound and screen work, etc but as long as the thing that does the actual calculations is still original, then it's playing on original hardware.

I was the same way with gaming and other activities until I learned to just switch the internet off.
Modern amenities and multitasking forced me into a state of always checking online, refreshing a 4chan thread or checking a group chat every 5 minutes even when gaming unless it was an online game. I'm not even a chronic smartphone user but having a distraction nearby broke my brain.

Then I learned to just switch off the modem or use another user profile on my computer etc and I was fine. If I want to I can now monotask reading, watching, gayman for hours at a time before the fatigue sets in. I've spent the last 7 hours gaming.

If you don't want it don't buy it. Nobody cares. A decent FPGA core is usually vastly superior to a software core due to the limits of parallel processing on typical CPUs. (AKA things that are supposed to run in parallel don't. The timing gets changed.) This doesn't make a huge deal for NES and GB but once you start moving into 16bit systems timings and parallel processing becomes increasingly hard. To run a cycle accurate emulator for SNES for example you'd need a 3GHz i7 to keep everything in sync. As you move up this becomes higher and higher. Meanwhile, because FPGAs are simulating each chip electrically simultaneously in hardware. It gets this for free. So yes, you can make a shit FPGA core. But it's a hell of a lot easier to make an accurate FPGA core than a cycle accurate software emulator.

Maybe it's because PS2/GC were always an awkward middle ground in terms of time investment. People will hate what I'm about to say but the truth needs to be spoken.

Older games/consoles are way quicker on average; you load a game, play for 25 minutes (or a little less/more according to the game & player), get your dopamine rush and you're done with it -unless you want to continue, or switch to a different game.
On the other hand, newer games (X360/PS3 and newer) are way slower. You need like 1-2 hours to make your session worthwhile, or it's going to feel unsatisfying. By that era, games went full "cinematic" even in terms of time required to realistically enjoy them.

So we got a quick dopamine cycle and a slow dopamine cycle.
But the PS2/GC/Xbox generation sits in that odd spot right in the middle. You know you don't really need hours and hours for your play session to make sense, but you don't really get that instant dopamine spike that older games provided as soon as you boot them. You aren't mentally prepared to waste a whole evening on that game alone (or at least, you're fully aware it doesn't really require that much time to be enjoyed) but you don't get nearly enough satisfaction in the first few minutes.
Sure it's a huge generalization because there are exceptions with extremely shorter or longer dopamine cycles in each gen, but still

Anyway, I will say this is infinitely better than my DS4 PS4 controller with phone clip setup I had been using before. As great as the DS4 controller is, especially with the touch pad letting you act as a mouse on your phone's screen without reaching for your phone's screen, it was so top heavy and not portable and was awful to use for more than five minutes. This Ipega phone controller lets me use my phone in both horizontal and vertical modes, any model, holding it snuggly and not feeling top heavy at fucking all. And because the screen is in the middle I can just use the touch screen rather than the DS4's touch pad for mouse movement.

I can also basically use it as a dual screen setup with the game on the top or bottom half and whatever else I want on the other.

Well, most of them at least. Not every ROMhack works on GBArunner2, so it’s nice to have a Miyoo Mini around to play the more exotic stuff. But yeah, my RP2S is just collecting dust now, and so is my Trimui Smart Pro. Feels like having a stronger handheld that can play more systems just gives me MORE choice paralysis, and stops me from playing games altogther.

SKILL ISSUE
Even with 3 systems I'm still using 2 regularly to play when I got time/a reason to play handhelds. Still use my Vita and DSiXL/3DS. The only one that's currently suffering with shelf dust syndrome in the R36 which is having an existential crisis until I buy/print a grip for it.

I don’t get it. Whenever I play GBA games on stuff like my RGB30, the text always seems super blocky with messed-up shading and pixel wobble unless I use an LCD filter. But on the Miyoo Mini (and the Plus), that same text looks just fine, no filter required. What the hell is it doing in the background?

How do you guys sync retroarch saves between PC and your android handheld?

Syncthing is good if your device is capable of it.
Otherwise I copy/paste the folders manually and have a shortcut to open them.

You want to make sure you have RA setup to save your saves & states in the same way and make sure you're using the same cores for states but otherwise you should get the hang of it.

Nintendo has the biggest classics library that people actually care about and are the most aggressively anti ROM site/anti emulation, their online services are terrible compared to the other two console manufacturers and they're also expensive

If you have an Xbox/Sony account it follows you across generations and usually you can just redownload on the new system, Xbox back compat and legacy content access is the best of the big three right now.

If you bought stuff on Wii/WiiU/3DS eshop it doesn't carry over to the switch, when the switch's life cycle is finally over switch & switch 2 purchases won't carry over to the next thing

That's what I've been doing, Except that DS games don't look great on 3ds, so I got a DSiXL for those. I've gone back to using my 3ds for some DS games so I can use analog stick hacks and widescreen hacks, twilight menu also has a sharper image filter that improves how they look a little bit, although it's still not as good as a DSiXL

So now I'm using a PS vita for (Vita/PSP/PS1)
3ds for 3ds games and (DS/light emulation if I'm traveling)
DSiXL for DS

And a RGB30 for anything older than the DS(GB/GBA/4:3 retro consoles)

The difference isn't necessarily in the colour if you have a saturated and bright IPS screen the colours can be pretty good,its in black levels, dynamic range, response times, contrast, sharpness etc. IPS' greatest failing as a display technology is IMO black levels, contrast can also be problematic but black levels are the killer, you don't get black, you get at best dark grey.

OLED being able to do per pixel lighting makes stuff look incredible, I was playing Colony Wars earlier and it looked perfect, space being completely black makes everything else pop, whereas looking at it on my very color accurate but IPS monitor it just looks faded because of the uneven lighting and poor black levels making the image more muted and the individual elements much less discrete, the near instant pixel response helps as well

The screens pixel to pixel response times are better by virtue of the technology used, its a separate thing from input latency or frame rate.

Most of these handhelds (the ones that aren't hideously cheap nuggets anyway) are using fairly fast IPS displays so you don't see visible ghosting or other effects from slow pixel response, but the screens are still slower than OLED will be.

It isn't that IPS looks bad, it can look quite good, but OLED will look better, how much better depends on what's being displayed

Playing Zelda 1 on my MMP. I briefly saved the state and rewound the game because I wanted to take some screenshots for an Epic Meme(tm) and when I reloaded the state everything was desynced. The screen looked the same, just outside the first dungeon with the water and bridge and the zora spitting fireballs at me, but the tile collision was wrong, I could walk over water or get stuck by invisible walls, and at one point a ghost came out of nowhere. I let myself get killed off and when I hit continue, instead of the usual start room I appeared in a weird place with a dungeon entrance and a secondary staircase, and when I walked into either it sent me to the moblin woods.

So uh yeah I need to check which core retroshart is using for this, I've never seen a mere savestate fuck things up that badly for a simple NES title.
