I thought MK1 was kind of lame back then (I appreciate it more now) and MK3 I thought jumped the shark a little, but I was super obsessed with MK2 and played it like crazy. Right from the start is felt like a huge step up from 1 and had so many awesome characters. My house was pretty close to the school so once I got a copy for Genesis I would run home every day at lunch and play it the whole time.

Two favorite memories come to mind. The first was that my mom thought it was really cool and I taught her how to spam teleports and rolls with Mileena and when my friends came over she would sometimes sit down for a round, kick their asses and then do her fatality as she'd cheer "Go Mileena, eat em up and spit out their bones!" and then go back to gardening or whatever. Good times.

The other was when we went to see the MK movie. Opening night and we were hyped as fuck coming out of it because that movie rocks so much more than it had any right to. My friends go to use the washroom and I'm waiting so I throw a quarter in the MK2 machine in the lobby and start playing.

Some guy comes up with his kid brother and doesn't even ask, just puts his own quarter in. I'm slightly miffed because I was having fun examining the arcade AI because it fought different than the home port. So he takes Liu Kang and I pick Mileena... Round 1 was just pure bullshit teleport and roll spam and he barely even got to move let alone land a hit. Round 2 I played a little more fair but still kicked his ass except that near the end of the match he finally landed a hit. I turned and looked genuinely offended and said "you ruined my flawless!" Teleport kick and the fight is done, he glares at me and starts to walk away when his little brother stops him and says "wait, look!" and he stands there in delighted awe and his brother with disgust as Mileena eats him up and spits his bones out.

I love how these fan games make these awesome edits of stuff that never was, like classic vs images or actual running sprites for these mk1/2 characters.
But I dont like how they keep making the game faster and faster, its this weird Killer Instinct feel where it plays at double speed with enormous combos.
I wish we could go back to the mk1/2 gameplay, not the turbo charged umk3 on steroids that modders go for.

The thread doesn't even imply that it is Retro.
Thread asks those who love Retro Mortal Kombat if they feel its a good spiritual successor to the 2D era of the series which is a fair question considering it could keep the Aesthetics, Sound and Gameplay style of the original retro games.

Also, consider this your only (You), cuck.

Wasteland from MK2 and the church from MK3 come to mind instantly. Living Forest is usually great regardless of game.

My favorite is UMK3, although I played MKT a lot too. Honestly, I love MK2's music and aesthetic, but never could properly get into the gameplay. Also, I don't remember MK4 being as bad as some people say it is nowadays. Haven't played it in almost 20 years, but back then I played it quite a lot and had fun with friends; It was a goodish follow up to MK3. Great music too, my favorite soundtrack in the franchise after MK2.

Favorite is of course MK2 I was obssesed with that game back then, hearing the screams in the arcade even from far was an incredible experience. Midway really knew how to make cabinets. The speakers really brought Dan Forden's opening to life.
I do a few replays on arcade emulator every month or so, sometimes like to check the home ports just for nostalgia sake.
The only problem is that I tend to end up playing by exploiting the AI due to how cheap it is. I wish it was more like the AI on the King of Fighters games, where you feel like you are almost playing against someone.
Not too long ago I was checking the MK4 PC port and was surprised at how good the music sounded, most of my MK4 memories were on N64 (I did play a few coins in the arcade back then) but the N64 audio was so incredibly compressed, comparing the two is very funny.

When i started finding these type of fan-made stages on the internet it blew my mind but at the same time the re-used assets made them feel so much more like they could really belong and exist in the world of Mortal Kombat, that's one of the things i like about playing it on MUGEN, ive got every original stage ever and some customs that feel like they could also exist, also people really make an effort to make more stuff that canonically exists into the 2D style which is cool.

Right now I'm thinking about what made Stryker seem so out of place back in the day. It can't just be because he's human since there are many others yet Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kano, Sonya, Jax, etc. don't feel out of place. Kang has the whole mystical chosen one monk thing going, Kano and Jax have cybernetic implants so I get those, but what makes Stryker feel so different compared to say Cage and Sonya? I guess it could be something as simple as the movesets as they both have their own energy blasts, Cage's shadow kick looks like a super power and Sonya's weird 90 degree flying move also does, whereas Stryker doesn't even have moves like those. Was Stryker the first MK character who didn't have any moves that even looked remotely like they were harvesting energy? Even Kano's knife throw in the first game looks like it does (plus the cannonball being a superhuman feat).

I love love love the arcade versions, they were definetely the versions to aspire playing. But I also have a soft spot for the ports.
Has anyone checked the Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition Enhanced romhack for the Genesis port? It completely revamps the original port in so many ways it's insane. The graphics, the intro, music, sound, voices, everything is incredibly better. You can even see SubZero regain his pose instead of a 1to1 clone of Scorpion.
All because the original port was likely done in extreme deadlines and with the mandate to use smaller cart sizes.

I wish someone cool could do something similar to the gameboy port of MK2, that game had a 262kb size cart, so tiny. If they used a larger cart I bet they could have put more songs and more than 2 stages. Just imagine the possibilities with double the cart size, or even a 1MB cart like the pokemon games.
It would have made a really decent port into something amazing.

If it weren't for the gimmicks (gore/fatalities, digitized graphics, etc), no one would have ever given a single solitary shit about Mortal Kombat. It has always been a fucking terrible franchise. The gameplay has always been complete ass. Everyone's normals are exactly the same (flailing arms like slap-boxing). All the motion is super rigid and stiff. The inputs for specials don't make a lot of sense (on one hand, they are simplified to input compared to other fighters. On the other hand, each character has completely different inputs between their equivalent moves, so you really have to do a lot of re-learning if you want to know more than one character's moveset), Dial-a-combos suck. Having a block button rather than just holding back sucks (block buttons only really work for 3D fighters like Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur). The story/lore is inconsistent in regards to taking itself super seriously and being completely silly/nonsensical (Not that I particularly give a shit about a fighting game's story, but story seems to be one of the main things people praise about Mortal Kombat). The character roster is small compared to it's competitors at the time, and a lot of the roster is just lazy palette swaps (Street Fighter's shotos have more effort put into differentiating them than Mortal Kombat's ninjas). The AI in single-player on the higher difficulty settings is literally impossible to beat because it cheats (reads your inputs, has lightning quick reflexes beyond the limits of an actual human, able to perform specials on command without having to do the actual inputs for them, etc)
I fail to see how it ever built up a competitive scene, or even just a casual fanbase as strong as it continues to be. It doesn't even look good to just spectate high-level players.

Not exactly the same, there are different hit boxes for each character. The good thing is that it also had plenty of normals to choose compared to other games, and some of these normals turned into specials like the spinning kick and the uppercut that would only be available for a few characters in Street Fighter.
>All the motion is super rigid and stiff.
The "game" was actually a filmed digitized interaction like Pit Fighter, you can't expect flying uppercuts and fluid fast paced action like Street Fighter because real people can't fly or jump around the screen. But there were some crazy looking specials that made some use of this gimmick. The game would be rigid and stiff for retards who don't know how to apply those specials. And by what

N64 Trilogy is my favorite. 3v3 Kombat is just too much fun and shenanigans. I wish they would make a modern version that combined the PS1, N64 and UMK3 Arcade together. Best of all three. It would be the last fighting game I would ever play.

Probably after MK9; you can tell what was left of Midway still put its soul into that game. After MK9 got the franchise back on track the Warner influence was pretty much rampant, and you can clearly see it with how they monetized and handled the DLC of each game starting with MKX.

Speaking of Warner, they seem to have something against the old games, because outside of the MK Arcade Kollection (which was a bare-bones bundle of arcade MK1, MK2 and UMK3—and mostly just to tie into MK9) they never re-released any other game. IIRC they have even delisted both MK9 and MKAK from most digital stores at this point. I can understand keeping games like Special Forces and maybe even Mythologies under the rug, but something like Shaolin Monks deserved another run.

i always liked vanilla mk3 over ultimate. the addition of the masked ninjas threw off the game's atmosphere imo, and the new stages were mostly terrible and repeated way too much.

Getting off /vr/ a bit. If I recall, WB had to pull MK9 because of a lawsuit from Wes Craven's estate over who owned what that was eventually settled. They did add MK9 Komplete Edition to the Xbox backwards compatibility library afterwards, but there was no option to buy it. Presumably there would have to be a new agreement to license Freddy and WB didn't want to pay up again which is why it was abandoned.

Ed Boon said he as much Mortal Kombat as they could possibly on Xbox Back compat as well but the only one they got was MK Vs DC. Presumably, something was amiss on the emulation of the software as WB were good with Xbox back compat in terms of licencing because they got a lot of licensed Lego games on there.

MK9-1 had a generic 3D fighter gameplay and was only trying hard to be a Tekken japanese 3D fighter. MK1-7 had their own original unique gameplay with clunky but more realistic movements and not necessarily bad gameplay compared to Japanese fighters at the time that were only trying to make the gameplay look faster with flying combos in the air.

They remain 3D fighters even without 3D stepping. Characters remain fully 3D and use 3D physics in a 3D environment to attack only lacking 3D physics to move sideways which doesn't affect the main gameplay 3D factor because both use the same 2D fixed camera angles and therefore both aren't fully 3D either.

NTA but you're wrong. 3D fighters, like Tekken, have 3D hitboxes which move in x, y and z coordinates in 3D space. This enables the possibility of i.e. the moves that hit from the sides as opposed to just from the front or back.
2D fighters like Street Fighter have strictly 2D hitboxes which only move in x and y. The hitboxes are separate from the graphics engine thus modern SF games can be 2D while having 3D graphics. Picrel illustrates this pretty clearly. I don't know how modern MK works though, never studied it.
