Japanese shit has always been plain and soulless. Remove the color dithering and the inherent 'fuzzing' effect of scanning a hand-drawn picture and it's all just DeviantArt OCdonutsteel-tier shit.

I like games that have animations for on screen "buttons" when you click them, especially when there's a sound effect and it changes things on the side bar. Bonus points when the things that change have their own sound effects. All of that's meaningless though if clicking the buttons doesn't result in massive lag, freezes and even hard locks or straight up crash to desktop.

Nipponers with good 2D skills still exist but they moved on from limiting themselves due to old-tech. they all use digital tools now and export/save to large ass high-res 4K or 8K . they don't care about tiny sprite art or dithered backgrounds now.

in terms of games, VNs can still sell in nippons, but there's not where the big money is. 2D artists would rather do private commissions, sell their thinbooks at comikeks cons, or do art for Gacha shit. but that's not /vr/.

There was some clear love put into menus as well. This thread made me think.

I do kinda miss stuff like mechwarrior 2, and others were the menus felt like an adventure game, where you went inside rooms, even for shit like graphics options.

Even that they wanted to feel like inside the game.

Love when that happens. HAL did it a bunch with Kirby (Super Star's UI changing depending on the subgame, DL3 and 64 giving the player other UIs) but Hyperzone on the SNES did it with the different ships you get. Smackdown vs Raw is another game that kinda did it.

I also like KOF '97, which leaned into the 'televised fighting tournament' angle with stuff like the between stage bits, the girls holding the round signs, the names that appear at the start of each round, etc.

ROT3K IV? that was on DOS too.

i never figured out the game 'cause i never read the manual. after getting beaten i like the PC AIs continue playing the game and eventually Sun Quan's faction took over china, and i got the endgame dragon FMV even though it was the AI who beat the game.
