This Simpsons game is loosely based on Season 1 where you have to fight Nelson Muntz (Bart The General), Ms. Lucille Botzcowski (Some Enchanted Evening), Sideshow Bob (Kristy Gets Busted) and Dr. Marvin Monroe (There's No Disgrace Like Home), as well as dealing with a pair of generic space mutants since Kang & Kodos weren't a thing yet.

To be fair, I like the Genesis version better for it's future proof 16-bit graphics, especially the background of the first stage where you see a dozen houses.

You do see Moe Szyslak for the purpose of doing Bart's iconic prank calls to him and spray painting his apron to red. But you don't see Apu or Principal Skinner in the game despite being on the box cover artwork.

This is the closest a game has felt "eerie" to me, to put it in clickbait youtuber terms. Knowing the Simpsons so well and then playing this as a kid was odd. The first stage LOOKED like Springfield, but nothing felt right. The music is odd. The voice clips that come out of nowhere. Whole game feels off to me although sometimes in a good way? Like that loooong stretch at the end of the first stage leading out to the retirement home. Something about that was cool. Felt like I was really exploring Springfield. Can't explain it. My first taste of virtual freedom.
That's all I got though. Sorry for the cringe.

It's not a good game but I owned it as a kid and when you only have like 4 games you tend to resign yourself to playing a bad game if you own one and you develop a bit of a callus to it.
I think the game starts off strong with the first level having a sort of adventure game logic to it. The controls suck and the platforming is harsh, which are the biggest problems with the game.
The cover art is awesome too, the NES version came with a poster and I hung it on me wall.
>>10809113
I always thought the music was this dissonant quality to it. The graphics in the museum level have this creepy realism to them compared to the rest of the game.

>> No.10809280

People always talk about how the whole game should have been like level 1. Would that have actually worked? Any other games out there like level 1 of Bart vs space mutants?

fucking weird game

>> No.10809469

I remember renting it on Genesis but didn't like it as much as the original NES one. Yeah its 16bit graphics but somehow didn't feel like it look better overall. Also no Simpsons theme music.
If the whole game was like level 1 it would be much better because level 1 is like a sort of puzzle-adventure game that actually uses Simpsons lore. It makes up for the bad controls.
Though, I admit, I kinda like the weirdness of the rest of the game, lile the walking shoes on the 2nd level (really smooth animation and weirdly eerie), or the realistic t-rex on the museum stage with the black background, fever dream-esque.

You're right, the game did feel eerie. All that empty space and the jarring sound effects. The prominence of the space mutants when they weren't really much to do with the show. You summed it up well. It was a strange game. Weird jokes like collecting hats on level 2. It had the veneer of the tv show but the humour was really strange and twisted.

The Genesis version removed the unique Game Over cutscenes for each level. Mostly different dialogue for the aliens, but the last level reveals what their secret weapon for world domination is: an army of Homer clones.

The Genesis version replaces Nelson and other Simpsons characters with generic yellow characters for whatever reason. The GameGear/Master System port also have some better sprites despite being in inerior hardware.
PC ports actually include some animated cinematics with the VAs.
There's no definitive version of vs Space Mutants.

>People always talk about how the whole game should have been like level 1.
The first level just feels like a Simpsons game. You are literally doing stuff from the show. Calling Moe, spray painting shit, fighting Nelson, asking grandpa for money, you see the movie theater, and other simpsons locale. The platforming is just a small excuse for you to go through the simpsons world.
The later levels have little to do with the simpsons and they got lazy with the items aspect that made level 1 fun and instead just made a platformer which it was never a great platformer engine.

You can only go left or right. If you stay in the center you'll never reach anything. The left is a dead end. Only by going right can you move forward. Very smart game design.

I played the NES ver on emulator ages ago. Level 1 is actually kind of fun, you have to go around figure out things to do/puzzles to spray paint various things. It's actually pretty fun. But the rest just somehow becomes the rest of the slop, it's a bait & switch
Bart Vs the World isn't too bad because the skateboard levels are actually kind of fun and there's other things to do than the abysmal normal platforming levels

Yeah, I think more of the same would have been preferable

Same. I remember watching the show while growing up and it was entertaining at the time. Having revisited about a decade ago it's just so boring, lame and cringe. Family Guy literally did everything better and it's not even close. And I'm by no means a fan either.

Awful games

>> No.10812478

None of the Simpsons games are any good. Generally games based off TV shows or movies suck cock.

Remember the Home Alone games? I remember renting them from a store when I was a kid thinking they would be awesome, featuring booby traps like in the movies. Nope. They were dog shit.

My theory is that they didn't include yellow because the Japanese NTSC spec was a bit funky and it was set up to deliberate produce yellow (ie. Asian) fleshtones so tan would look yellow on most Japanese consumer TVs.

>i never knew this game was on the genesis too

Yeah, the game was originally released on the NES, but it was later ported to the Genesis, GameGear and Master System, as well as other home PC's. Flying Edge was basically a division of Acclaim, because back then some third parties were still locked under Nintendo third party exclusivity rules, and to get around this, they would create alternative publishers just for Sega consoles. This magazine ad basically says that Flying Edge is owned by Acclaim.
