10780098

I finally managed to get my Game Boy audio driver to a point where I'm happy with it. Not much to show for it, though. Music was never really my thing, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

The biggest new feature is support for multi-channel percussion. Using the noise channel by itself for percussion ends up sounding pretty thin, so a second channel is sometimes used to give it a fuller sound. This is done briefly enough to add body to the sound without interfering with the rest of the music.

Before, it was possible to do this manually by writing both the percussion part and the regular part onto the same musical "score". It's horribly messy doing it that way, though, so I came up with a better solution: hijack the existing sound effect system and use it for percussion, too. Basically, turn the percussion into sound effects. Because sound effects can use multiple channels, and they take priority over music, supporting multi-track percussion comes naturally. Just dedicate one music track for percussion, and it becomes as easy as playing regular notes.

Some new pre-patched roms (not (yet, at least) on CDRomance):

>The Bard's Tale - Tales of the Unknown - Uncut Japanese Edition (with Bracers6 bugfix patch applied also) (for NES, by MetHy aka Ness)
http://files.catbox.moe/ng4l7p.nes
more info here https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7179/
& here

>Koneko Monogatari - A Kitten's Tale - The Adventures of Chatran (for Famicom Disk System)
http://files.catbox.moe/ibcwwy.fds
Note: This exact version (just the Japanese title screen WITHOUT the ending fix applied) may actually be on CDRomance, but posting here just in case.

>The Adventures of Milo and Otis (plus ending-fix "NoYodaSpeak" patch applied) (for Famicom Disk System)

See here for more info: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7242/

>Zelda - Interconnected Strongholds (for SNES)

And, for now, last but definitely not least,

>Nekojara Monogatari - Kat-ching-Tale (for Game Boy, in English by Asbestoast)

I forgot that I posted some more pre-patched games in a Toriyama thread, so,

Here's the newest, 3.0 version of the hack called Chrono Trigger+ (adds playable Glenn, a new era, restores beta content and lots of other things) It's on CDRomance, but he added the Auto-Run patch to his versions, while these versions here still let you run by holding B. I included the author's readme in both files. See here for more info: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3691/
NOTE: Older version save files work, but act weird (for example, every party member in my last-version file now looks like Crono, sprite-wise)

>Chrono Trigger+ - The Alternate Timeline.sfc
https://files.catbox.moe/h9ukbv.7z

>Chrono Trigger+ - The Alternate Timeline (Balanced Difficulty version).sfc
https://files.catbox.moe/76onip.7z

And since I couldn't find the English translation of Super Butoden 1 on CDRomance, here it is pre-patched (based on the French version rather than the Japanese, so apologies if its 50hz (you may be able to apply a 60hz patch to it, if so)):

I recently found out that not only does one of my favourite gameboy titles of all time (Gargoyle's Quest) have a sequel on the NES, but that it was officially ported as a Japanese Gameboy title. There is a hack that translates this to English using the NES release. So my plan is to play the original gameboy title (which also has a romhack with an improved English translation) followed by the sequel. And then the Demon Crest SNES title (which also has some romhacked improvements albeit controversial ones) to complete the trilogy. And all this on one chinese handheld.

Audio on PC is a whole different beast, but interesting to get into. It's a lot more free-form (just fill a buffer with samples). You can make it do whatever you want. Not that I have much experience with it myself. Pic related is about the extent of that-- a crappy emulator I made years ago. The audio emulation isn't much (just a few hundred lines of code), but I learned a lot from doing it.

So, I'm in a dilemma and I'm not sure if this drama was blown out of proportion or not.
But essentially, I'm translating a game originally for the SNES, the lead translator who translated 90 percent of the script wanted to keep this project very secret as she was afraid Koei might send a cease and desist on a 30 year old game.
While that agreement was made, we desperately needed a programmer to continue the project so I asked the official otome games tumblr to send a help wanted for a programmer. It worked! And I sent the opening cutscene in english on reddit.
The lead translator went on a rant everywhere about it after finding this information.
I understand that I was in the wrong, a promise was broken, and she just doesn't want this project to get into any trouble.
However, from my perspective, that was the quickest and best way to receive help, and making it known that it was going on is what other fan translators do to make it known that people can join the team or to stop others from making their own to waste energy.

Don't know about any of the other ones, but I'd enjoy hearing if any of the others are good.

Also, here a couple of new pre-patched games:

First, a new hack of SMB1 called Super Mario Bros.: Definitive that combines the levels of SMB1 and The Lost Levels into one game, and also makes Luigi play like he does in Lost Levels. That seems like a pretty severe limit. I would've assumed the GBA could do more than that. But even so, it looks like it's not holding you back. That must be some efficient tiling to fit in only 128 tiles.

If it was a SNES instead of a GBA, the limit would be 64 tiles, not 128.
Also the GBA has two affine layers instead of one, what allows bottom-top tile combinations.

Even if it's just a regular cart, ROM is much cheaper nowadays, so instead of using a 1MB ROM like with Thunder Force IV, they can use 4MB or more to bake shit like the spinning 3D ship.

A cartridge just has to put data in the right place at the right times for the hardware to read, there are no technical limitations
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jee4tlakqo
But what a cartridge can have inside it that's still in the spirit of the original hardware is subjective. Personally I don't find tech demos with an RPi wired to cartridge pins very interesting.

Depending on the system, yes. They essentially connected directly to the memory addresses of the system, if not also had additional connections to what was the equivalent of a system bus. You still have some limitations though. You are limited by how much current the system can supply to the cart, by the system's sound and video output, and how fast it can process that even if you make the cart do all the work, but beyond that if you can fit it on the cart you can do damn near anything.

Their main limits at the time was your options for such small CPUs and their cost as well as the cost of storage and RAM at the time. Nowadays you can easily jam a 1Ghz CPU, 1TB NAND, and a few GB of RAM on an NES cart if you wanted to.

Case in point, >>10806604

I personally never cared for this though. It's literally just jamming an entire significantly more powerful self-contained PC on an NES cart and outputting the resulting audio/video to the NES while taking inputs from it's controller port. At this point why even bother, you aren't using the NES as anything more than a over-glorified and poor quality A/V adapter for the cart itself, you would literally get better video and audio just plugging the cart into your TV directly at that point.

And like >>10806620 mentioned with that much space you can also just put as much sprites as you want on the cart. It's not like the Genesis technically could not do (bad) FMV, just that it would have taken an insane amount of space at the time. There was a SNES game that had short FMVs on the cart. So you don't have to create a super-amazing-optimized 3D engine on the limited hardware just for that effect now when you can just put a giant ROM chip on the cart and pre-render the sprites, provided you can read them into the console fast enough.

Something like the Overdrive2 tech demo, that was some amazing coding, the 3D AFAIK was not just pre-rendered images.

>> No.10807102

>>10807064
>Something like the Overdrive2 tech demo, that was some amazing coding, the 3D AFAIK was not just pre-rendered images.
Normally, demos like that are done by rasterizing a form of vector graphics. All of the transform, lighting, and clipping operations are pre-calculated. It looks like Overdrive 2 is no exception (source: https://jix.one/pushing-polygons-on-the-mega-drive/ ).

>> No.10807273

>>10807102
Yeah, I know it wasn't a full realtime 3D engine, I was just saying that it wasn't just individual pre-rendered frames that was essentially just a FMV and is far more impressive work than just that Doom on NES cart.

Press C-Up + L-Trigger once to access a sound test.
D-Pad Left and Right selects a song ID and L-Trigger plays the song.
D-Pad Up and Down allows you to change the sound font, tempo etc.

Press C-Up + L-Trigger twice to access no clip mode.
D-Pad Left activates no clip.
D-Pad Right displays a random AI message.

Benedani's tweaks fix the captain flyguy boss, red star progression and remove debug mode. I ported them over. None of Benedani's stuff was touched except the colored goomba fix.

Out of the box the wii u emulation is hit or miss, half the official virtual console games have a dark filter applied to them, you need to use UWUVCI AIO to remove them.
