So the closest you can get to real hardware DAR output like on CRT with modern displays is 1170x896

You can also do 1024x784(half of 2048x1568) and get perfect hardware-accurate DAR ouput that way too(though you may need to use sharp bilinear) although that will leave some borders(but then again you are getting some borders with 896 too and if you want to fill the full 1080p you should go with 1410x1080 though again the 1410 is more like 1410.612244897959183673469387755102040816326 so you do get some issues like with 1170 above).

All in all 4:3 DAR simply is inaccurate and results in things looking too fat compared to original console output
