Fun game. Feels like it could have used a couple more levels. I liked it when treasure were still at Konami, games like Contra 3 more more balanced and polished. Treasure's games are good but they put in too much weird shit at the expense of making the game well-rounded.

Fuck my ass trying to 1cc this game on hard is draining my soul. The only real trouble spots are 2-2 and 3-2, and 3-2 isn't even that bad after a while. But 2-2 is absolutely fucked. It's a full ass 12 minutes, twice as long as the 2nd longest levels and as long as both the other acts. This wouldn't be so bad if there were more checkpoints for training but as it is you have to go through 4 minutes of trivial combat to get to the first problem spots and the big ones don't happen until 8 and 10 minutes in. If by some miracle you make it past 2-2 you can still die to poor RNG in 2-3 or getting overwhelmed by spiders in 3-1 before tackling 3-2, and if you die there it's another 20 minutes before you try 2-2 again.

Fuck, I really don't want to have to break out an emulator and use save states but I've been grinding this on and off for months and just want to move on to the second game.

I kneel. Can't even finish this game on normal. Thank God there's an easy mode. If you got that far, you probably have talent to do it. Just take a break, lest you get burnt-out. Start the second game, if you will, then come back later.

I know what you mean, I was also working on practicing 2-2 on hard.
I don't really mind it though, it's just so fun and amazing. Probably one of the craziest set pieces in any game I played.
I don't think you have to pressure yourself though, just play whenever you feel like.
You didn't move to S&P2? Or you mean doing a hard play off that? If you just mean playing casually, go play it, leave your hard mode S&P1 for later.
I still never beat the hard mode and got distracted with other things, but I know I can always go back to it.
Learning all the levels is a pleasure and I never get tired of playing it.

I thought both were challenging, but I played 1 way more.
Feel like maybe levels themselves are harder on 1, while 2 has harder bosses IIRC.
Also depends what controls are you using. 1 in anything but an original N64 controller will be harder because the game was built around the specific sensibility of the 64 stick. 2 was built around playing with the wiimote and Nunchuck so playing with a regular controller will also feel slower especially with how the game throws shit at you from all angles.

S&P2 to me will be one of those timeless arcade style games. The game looks great considering the hardware, everything runs fast, fluid, so many enemies on screen at once. The combat is quick, fast paced, and pays off to be more methodical when it comes to fighting bosses. It's a game I've kept playing for the last 14 years to actually maintain and increase my high score. I haven't cared about that in a game since I was a kid but this game and Space Harrier are the two I keep going back to.

If you buy the most expensive everdrive (Everdrive X7) it has two differences. A real-time clock so you can play Animal Crossing and it automatically saves games so that you can power off without losing data (the cheaper everdrives and clones require you to hold reset to return to the loader menu before you power off or the internal cart save won't be written to the sd card). But this cart costs a lot more than $10 more.

Game's difficulty I'd say is hard, once you get used to the controls and all the options you have at hand and get good at multitasking the aiming and the platforming/dodging/melee, then the game sort of "clicks" and it becomes slightly less hard but it's still a demanding game.

Starting to get to the space cannon with over half health consistently but the final stretch is the hardest part of the game by far. First you have to get through the orange ball mine field, then you have to survive the fucking engine fight before running the gauntlet of tracking blue balls. If you’re lucky enough to make it this far you better hope you have more than 1/3 health because parts of the final laser wall obstacle run are fucking impossible to dodge. S&P1 is a more grounded game... Literally. You can't float around like Soace Harrier as you can in 2, so 1 has a lot more jumping around.

>> No.10812814

>>10812665
I’m really gonna miss the jumping when I play 2. It adds a level of mechanical depth to the game that floating just won’t match. There are times you have to jump over obstacles and you can also use it to dodge a lot of ground level attacks but that came with its own risk as it you had to be wary of where and when you’re landing and if you get hit in the air you take extra damage from falling. Throughout 2-2 there’s parts with two cannons sweeping side to side where you can just jump rope the bottom one while ignoring the top one but later on the cannons start fanning their bullets in a narrower spread and jump roping is more likely to get you hit in the air so it’s actually LESS risky to weave through the ground level bullets.

Shit I love jumping, I wish there was a straight up S&P1 clone genre.

You might like Hi no tori (the MSX version). It feels like proto 2D S&P. Except instead of having cabal-type 3D shooting it's a vertical shmup. Fairly simple in that regard, has some upgrades and items you can use but doesn't have melee attacks or anything fancy. But it does have jumping and platforming. Shooting & jumping in this game made me think of playing a sort of 2D ancestor of Sin and Punishment.
Be warned it has a really weird progression system where you play levels in a loop until you find certain keys to advance through new paths, so you will be having to revisit old levels again, it's really weird but I guess fits the source material's theme of eternal recurrence lol.
