What was your first retro game, /vr/?

Mines was Super Mario 64 on DS I got for my birthday. I liked it way more than my only other Mario Game, super Mario Sunshine. I've been hooked on retro games since.

Most of us ( myself included) played retro games when they first came out but I guess it wasn't retro when I beat Mario 64 on a 64 right? why no in fact it was brand new. Or else wouldn't this post be " FIRST game you ever played" ?

My first game was Super Mario Bro 3.

OP here, I made this thread since I figured there's probably a lot of people on 4chan who started on 6th gen. People like me who were 5 when the PS2 came out, are now 18, and 4chan's always had a huge population of people age 15-20.

Anyway, I guess the equivalent for older people would be whatever game was considered retro when you first started playing. Like if you started with SNES, it'd be an NES or Atari 2600 game.

Well, okay then.

Hunt the Wumpus isn't technically the first game I ever played, it's just the first one you can really call a game in the modern sense. Alpine Avalanche is the first game I ever played, but it has no real gameplay apart from dodging objects to reach the peak of a mountain to no apparent purpose.

But Hunt the Wumpus is the first one you can actually lose. You wander a tesseract looking for an invisible beast with no major clues as to it's location. Your only chance to defeat it is to come up behind it, so you wander the endless maze trying to luck out and hit the monster while it invisibly faces the correct direction.

Sadly, I don't own the system or the game anymore, so I can't really recall how you determine it's location or facing.

It's still pretty easy to get a hold of the system itself, but since they almost require the round tube CRT televisions, they aren't easy to get working. Also, the system itself is fairly prone to hardware failures.

My first retro game was a bunch of different games on the Intellivision. I played a bunch of memorable games, and some games that at the time I just could not make sense of. I think that game was adventure? there were some games that my brain couldn't abstract what the shapers were supposed to be. For the most part though I could see the value of them. This was in 98' when I used to get babysat by some of my parent's friends. Pitfall was ahead of it's time by my evaluation of how well the system pulls off representation of the games. The most memorable game was a space shooter that mimicked 3d like tempest but had an open ceiling instead of perspective of shit running at you.

If they updated the graphics, changed shit, and added stuff to the game, it's not fucking retro.

If 6th Gen. was considered retro, would you think Wind Waker HD was a retro game? No you fucking wouldn't.

Give it up, kid, you're not a "supah kewl retro gamer! XD :P" like you think you are.

My grandparents bought me a NES in 1987, I was 4 years old. I didn't have serious contact with video games before that time

I ended up getting some really great games for it
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Contra
Super Contra
Star Trek
Maniac Mansion
Bubble Bobble
Double Dragon
Double Dragon II
Marble Madness

Good times

woulda been something on Atari 2600, hard to say what, I just played whatever my cousins had

but I didn't get reeeeally into it (because there wasn't much depth to get into yet, except maybe in the arcades which I couldn't usually get to) until Super Mario Bros., and to a lesser extent Ice Climber, Excitebike, and a few other early NES games came out

I am always amazed how people can remember this. My first retro game was a full 28-30 years ago or so. I know my first recognizable one or noteworthy one was probably just Super Mario Bros. on the NES. I played a lot of strange stuff on PC before that, but I couldn't begin to recall those.

So is 2, and largely 4.
The problem isn't solely in COD games like everyone wants to make you believe, they knew how to make a fucking awesome scripted campaign. I loved 2 when I played it for the first time and the regen health was an interesting departure from most FPS. But then every fucking game started copying it and it killed creativity. That's the problem.

I'm not sure I understand the question, but I think the answer would either be Rush 2049 on the N64 that me and my brother got from a guy my dad worked with and went to Kid Rock concerts with my mom.

Otherwise, the answer would be the collection of arcade games(mostly Namco I think) that was on the computer our uncle gave to us, since he was computer people when that was special, and he'd upgraded.
It ran Windows 98, and I was shit at Doom and Pac-man, but I was decent at Centipede and Galaxian.

First game I'd say is either Time Bandits or Impossible mission on the Atari ST.

First Retro game that I'd discovered years after it had been released, though, probably metroid 1.

I loved metroid 2 and super metroid as a kid, but I could never find metroid 1 until I realized it was on the NES and not the gameboy.

But before that, my aunt let us borrow her Atari system. I can't remember if it was the 2600, 5200 or 7800, but my earliest /vr/-related memory was switching the TV back and forth between Frogger and Star Wars: Ewoks when I was 4 years old.
