Retro sizer https://retrosizer.com/
Retro handhelds spreadsheet https://pastebin.com/ZyqXr19r
SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Just avoid the RG Nano
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with lower prices, better specs, but weaker build qualities
TrimUI: Good build quality, shitty software with no good CFW alternatives

>How do I get games
Google: tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up on your computer, throw them away, and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Honestly I’m happy with my chinkheld, I play a lot of classic games, is the perfect format to play. It didn’t radically change my life but made my anxiety more tolerable. If you are on the verge of acquiring one, don’t hesitate, buy one with good ergonomics and screen. In five years the quality and power of these devices and the improvement to the software will make them a must buy, but it’s more than enough now specially for the price.

I did stretch the elements, I just kept the aspect ratio the same, just like the 3DS

I did start with a low resolution source, I did not integer scale (which would be cheating for this example), I went from 714x136 to 1200x229

The 3DS is not changing the aspect ratio, and scaling algorithms have come a long way and can now keep sharp pixels even with weird non-integer scaling.

MM+ is nice but I feel like I want to get a horizontal handheld. I saw a bunch of people recommending Pocket 2S. Is comfortable to play on? My main problem with MM+ is that bumpers and triggers are awfully positioned. I also wouldn't mind having access to more powerful systems. Another thing I'm considering is RG35XX H because of Russ. Bumpers look fine but triggers probably suck on it too but it can't even play systems that would use them. And I already have deck but I play non-/vr/ games on it.

The Pocket 2S is a bit more powerful and uses android emulation. It does run Dreamcast and N64 perfectly from what I've seen.

Get the 2s if you don't mind android, want DC games, and don't mind spending a bit more. Get the XX H if you want a pocketable horizontal for 2d and PSX games.

I'm getting the urge to just settle for something on the market for my ps2/gc needs. I haven't bought a retroid 4 because I think the screens a tad to small and the new anbernic seems perfect screen size and more comfortable to hold but it seems too weak. 556 can play PS2 and GC just fine if you don't care about meme upscale to 2x. Neither of them can play the entire libraries anyways (you need an Odin 2 or actual umpc like the Deck for that) so personally I recommend just getting a 556 and cope until something else comes out.

nah m8, RP4P definitely closes the gap on PS2 better than my 556. RP4P is like 98 - 99% of the library at fullspeed no dips at 1x or above vs probably around 90% on my RG556 fullspeed no dips at 1x or above. GCN is relatively easy though yeah, only difference for the most part is degree of upscaling.

Never said otherwise. I'm just saying 556 can cover the entire library as well for the average person so it really comes down to whether you really need that upscale. It's kind of ironic though since RP4P's screen is dogshit so the upscale isn't that much better whereas the 556 actually has a beautiful OLED but can typically only do 1.5x.

>> No.10800758

>>10800739
>556 can cover the entire library as well for the average person
EEEEHHHHHHH alright, fine, I suppose it's a matter of opinion as to what an average person in this space might play. I can't personally agree with that, though. To me, that nearly 10% difference of the library is significant. I think most people will run into at least one PS2 game that doesn't play fullspeed on the 556 with any settings, but does on the RP4P. I've already found Onimusha 3 and Nightshade can't on my RG556, and Xenosaga EP 1 is mostly okay but still has moments where it is CPU bottlenecked and no settings can help it. I don't think these are all that niche, at least in the context of "kind of guy that emulates PS2 games on chinkhelds".

Fairly certain episodes 2 and 3 of Xenosaga will be outright unplayable on this as well, but to be fair I don't even know if those will run without any dips on the RP4P either.

>> No.10800760

Haven't played Xenosaga games and have no intention to, but I'd imagine the 556 can run them at 1x easily. Maybe try setting an underclock and turn off hardware cache.

>> No.10800780

>>10800765
It plays well for the super short duration he played. Literally just a minute or two later when you get to Nobunaga up in the Castle it already starts shitting the bed. Also as you probably noticed, he never got that cutscene (not the CG one that plays right after, the in-engine one) to play anywhere close to fullspeed. That's how it is for the entire game, and you can't even just skip them and then watch them later on jewtube or something. They're all just slow as shit and you have to wait through them.

As for Xenosaga EP 1, like I said it's mostly fine, but there are certain segments where none of the underclocks help. I do keep hardware cache off fwiw. Episodes 2 and 3 are dramatically more demanding from my memory of older Odin vids. I hope they run well, but I'm expecting that I'll have to bust out the Steam Deck instead.

>> No.10800794

>>10800780
I'm still doubtful that you can't get Onimusha working with some hardware tweaks. People were really quick to dismiss the 556 as struggling hard with PS2/GC, but we know now it runs most games fine for the most part. I won't argue further as I have no intention of playing these games though, but I do wonder if you can get it running fine with some tweaks in the settings like I mentioned earlier.

Trust me anon, I've tried everything. It's just not happening for Oni 3. Even tried bouncing around Nethersx2 1.5 classic, Nethersx2 1.8 Alpha, Aether 1.4, etc. I understand retards like the Retro Handhelds guy ran everything without Vulkan initially and made people think this thing was a lot less capable than it is. I was in here laughing at him too because I already know what a chip around the level of D900 is generally capable of. That's not me though, I know what settings to configure. As great as the hardware is in general, there's just a hard stop for some of these PS2 games like Onimusha 3.

It wouldn't. Having good eyes won't change the AOV, holding it closer to their face will but they'll be forced to focus on an object less than 30cm compared to using a larger screen they can use at arms length.
Needing to hold the device less than 30 centimetres means they are ergonomically locked into playing the dev with their hands held up to their face, their elbows bent and their shoulders likely spread.
Unless they autism themselves a ghetto solution where the screen hangs in front of their face using a helmet with an arm or some kind of external tablet stand with a wired & / bluetooth device used for input, they're not having a more awesome experience.

Good eyes just mean that something is in focus. Having bad eyes does not mean an item appears smaller. Eyes are not functioning in the same way as a magnifying glass, reading glasses or a lens would. You don't zoom your eyes. People with good eyes aren't cartoon characters.

I started off with an R36S found out it was super uncomfy, picked up a trimui smart pro and finally got an RGB30 a few days ago and today I got a little grip for the 30.
The trim is the best option for widescreen stuff and did alright with 4:3 due to its size but the RGB30 with IS OS on/off coming in at a comfy 3.8 > 4" really is cosy buut it was a little cramped, I didn't expect it to win me over.
Ergonomically the trim was winning the war, it felt better in the hands for longer sessions and while I don't think it needs a grip I know from experience a vita style grip done right could make it very cosy for long sessions. The RGB30 was bigger than I expected and being horizontal helped but it is just a block and to hold it right for the face buttons my fingers would be too close at the rear turning into a more clawlike grip, it only really felt right if I was holding it dual analog style but ehhh.

So I was kinda skeptical about the grip, I've used them previously on 3DS XL, N3DS and N3DS XL and they fixed the issues kiinda, worked best for the lil fella and was iffy on the others.
Turns out my skepticism was wrong and with a grip it brings it to Vita/Trim Smart size/ergos, a bit taller but hey more room for your fingers at the back and my index fingers sit better on the triggers. Middle fingers can barely meet in the centre when straightened and so it works.

In the end the RGB30 really did turn out well with a grip. It and the Trim are gonna stick around in use although idk if I can keep up with JelOS since it's a piece of shit, If I can get ST on ArkOS without suspend issues it'll be a win.
-And as for the R36S.I think the R36S is kinda cool, I love the battery compartment and acces and maybe it could be fixed by a grip too but I'm not sure it's worth the investment. I'll probably sell it off locally or whatever in a bit after the sales end. Vertislop still looks good, but man they really gotta get the ergos right.

I don't know where you live but if you're in the US it's very likely your local library has a 3D printer and it's dirt cheap to print stuff in my experience, at least in my local area. You can find files for a grip just by Googling "R36S grip 3D print" and I doubt it'll cost more than $5 or so in resin from your library to make one. At worst you're out $5. Printing shops nowadays also tend to have a 3D printer they'll let you use. As long as you're not selling the things on Etsy no one cares.

Anyone have experience using these with Analogue Pocket? I'm thinking I will have to pry or clip the feet off since it doesn't have the clip joints. I've seen video of someone using the pocket as a gameboy player for GCN/Wii using a 3rd party cable, so I know it can work, just not sure about the hardware.

You can make one for yourself as an overlay in photoshop and if you're still worried you can run sharp shimmerless underneath for realtively little cost.

>>10803723
I do a weird one at home, It's an overlay for SNES, 4:3 content and I'll sometimes change it per game (FFV's overscan being an example). I got memed into a 55" 4k TV for my bedroom (4k displays have less size variance on the TV front than 1080p & 720p sets did so there's a huge gap between 32", 43 and 50-55") and it's 1.85 to 2m away which is way too fucking big for some things.
Talking 44.94" for 4:3 content and around 41" for 8:7. So I calculate the dimensions for a 28>32" viewport in the display that the game needs to run in RA, then shift it down to the bottom left where it's most comfy and apply an overlay as a bezel and to do simple scanlines or a dot grid overlay.

What the fuck is this Twilight Menu shit even for? For all these people that wanna play crappy GBA emulation where half of the ROMhacks just don't work? Why not just buy a chinkheld for that shit instead of copying with decade-old hardware?

All I want to do is play DS games, on two big screens, and skip all of that OS shit and go straight to the R4 card on boot like you can on the screenlet DS Lite. How is that so hard?

Consider for a moment that GBA is 3.8 integer scaled on a DSi XL and would be 4" if stretched.
That's already bigger than the cheap chinkhelds with 3.5" screens. It's 5" on a device like the ol' RG552 and just baaarely the same size as integer scaled on a RG405M or a 4" 4:3 screen.
They're just doing what you're trying to do and they don't even need a shader or overlay for those big chonky pixels!

I never modded my DSi XL, Always used a flashcart and was content but I get the autism over not having autoboot.

I actually agree, the 3ds being shit was what pushed me into giving retro handhelds another chance. I think size does matter usually but the experience on 3ds was so poor that chinkhelds won out.

People pick up the DSi XL for GBA because it's recommended.
You have retards who say you don't need more than a PSP, DS, 3DS etc.
It's first party.
It has good buttons.
You may already own one.
They're cheap and you might think you're less likely to get chinked buying one.
There's replacement parts that are easily sourced.
You can see how it'd be appealing. So long as the games they want to play run, they're content, same with using a 3DS for DS desu.

The DSi XL is still nice at least because those big beautiful screens, the 3ds screens pack more PPI but look like liquid garbage.
The weirdos cutting them in half just to play GBA are insane.
Playing the Ace Attorney games of FF III, IV or 4HoL or your favourite DS game on a DSi XL is an experience that's hard to beat.

I think if you already have one of these kinds of systems, it's valid to say "it's good enough for my needs". But it's dumb to go out of your way to buy one for the sake of being your pocket emu.

DSi can't really go beyond NES and GB before it struggles, the PSP can do SNES at the cost of heavy audio bugs and PS1 at the cost of no L2/R2, and while 3DS is great if you're only interested in the Nintendo handheld library, even official SNES releases on that thing struggle to run at 100% sometimes. Pic related would get it chugging for me at times.

The truth of the matter is, these handhelds are all old and used, and while it's true you risk getting "chinked", I think you're equally at risk of just getting old, worn-out hardware going the first-party route. At least if you go through reputable means to find a modern retro handheld, you can trust that what you're getting is fairly new, and you'll have some level of customer support.

>> No.10804192

Kinda? Depends. If you're the type of person willing to use a phone then you're likely a consoomer who upgrades frequently.

The battery's your biggest problem, lithium batteries don't react to abuse well but you'll have the same type of battery in a dedicated handheld too. People treat their batteries like shit and there's a lot of misinformation out there.
You can mitigate it by not charging to 100% & overcharging. Avoid discharging below 30% and never let it run empty.
Ideally you want to be charging between 30% > 80%. Fast charging's better than slow charging in this case and you don't want the battery to get too warm while charging; a ventilated surface works well.
Alternatively you can also replace it once its capacity drops and batteries for your mass produced consoomer phone should be easy to find and repair shops will do the deed even if you're a butterfingers or disabled.

I finally got my DSi LL. The staining around the controls is GNARLY, but screen is a lot less yellow than the one I ordered before this. Especially considering that was an American XL while this one is Japanese, so really, this one has a lot more reason to yellow. The battery's bulging a bit, so I'll probably replace that and I'll be all good. Shame about having no auto-boot option, though. I even went through the whole homebrew process thinking I'd be region locked out of certain games, but apparently they didn't start doing that until the 3DS era, so I can deal with a bit of moonrunes on the start screen until I launch the card.

it depends on the game
i give you example of harvest moon on snes that runs poorly, despite not even being mode 7 game. game slows down to a literal halt no matter what you do when you switching tools, and since you gonna be switching tools constantly in that game, it makes it unplayable.
my guess is that something cpu intensive must have been happening on real console that did that, like in-game world would need to update all the tiles to accommodate for tool usage. likewise the earlier pic of earthbound would have issue of emulating too many sprites at once, as according to people, even real snes crawls to single digit fps during that part. but that can be fixed with fast sprites speedhack

>> No.10806360

>>10806352
and the funniest part about harvest moon snes on psp is that game is totally playable full speed otherwise, can even be underclocked to 222mhz and still be playable... but that tool switching part what kills it. it's damn shame
people should test performance of chinkhelds on harvest moon snes. disable frameskipping and switch tools to see if game runs full speed. it's a great benchmark game for very odd game behavior that not many snes games even had. but just raw power it provides in benchmarking might be better than typical mode 7 game, because to tell you the truth, a lot of mode 7 games do run on psp with frameskipping help. people exaggerating when saying snes altogether is not playable. it is playable... just a lot of games are not, and you have to fuck with speedhacks sometimes

Keep in mind, it's not running snes, it's running an emulator that's running snes.

We kind of take emu for granted so it's easy to forget how complex these kinds of programs are, not only having to translate everything that's happening from a format a SNES can understand to a format another device can understand, but doing so in real time with less than a single frame of waiting time for those translations to happen. It's a hell of an engineering feat that emulators for any console exist and run well.

So now that I've jumped down this rabbit hole, I've grabbed a FPGBC kit for physical carts without having to mod a real GBC and I took a look at all my old Gameboys and DSes realizing just how messed up they are in terms of the shell and I was wondering what the way to restoring them would be in terms of shells, screen, etc so that it's like it originally was, no mods.

My Pocket and Color have seen far better days since the screens and the shells have gouges and scratches in them. Are there any shells close to OEM quality or is Nintendium still out of reach? I assume the screen is under the actual plastic cover, right? So another plastic cover would be the only thing I would need to get that sorted out?
My GBA looks like it's been thrown across a football field with how much I dropped it when I was younger and I lost the battery cover like 20 years ago. Do we have anything close to OEM quality or is Nintendium also out of reach? Like with the GBP/GBC, do I have to replace the entire screen or just the thing that goes over it?
Is SP shell replacement still a complete Chinesium crapshoot or have they gotten better? Mine's still fine, just need to replace the charging port, but if I ever need to I assume it's still bad, right?
DS Phat, how's the situation on that? Do the hinges break on the aftermarket stuff or is it still just as bad as the original? Also, I assume rehousing is going to be an absolute chore, isn't it?
DS Lite, same deal. On my original the entire top-right corner covering the power light just snapped off as I was holding it when I was younger so I need a replacement shell. I've done a replacement for a relative (and slightly overtightened the screws causing an imprint in the plastic while also making it so the screen wasn't perfectly seated or something so if you pushed on it it went completely white) but the shell I got like 15 years ago now felt noticeably less quality than the original. Is this still the case?

Is OEM quality just impossible?

I think my main problem with the Odin 2 is that, while the RP4P manages to just barely stay pocket-sized, the Odin 2' too big to be carried without some kind of shoulder bag or backpack, and if you're already having to use a shoulder bag or backpack, you may as well just get a Deck and have significantly more power and compatability. I know the Odin 2's obviously way smaller, but two inches too big and five inches too big are both too big.

It wasn't terrible because unlike modern phones these aren't glued to hell, and everything came apart with little force, but it was still pretty annoying because you have to unseat the battery, unseat the speakers and sticks, unscrew the sticks and mobo, and then pull the mobo out without being an idiot that forgot his SD card was still in, and then do the fix.

But since it's unscientific you may have to tweak it, and an extra annoying part is that the analogs register as (-1,-1) when not plugged in, so I was trying to test gameplay while wondering why the fuck I kept moving to the upper left and worrying I had somehow fucked up such a simple task. I did a small 3/8" square 2x stack of duck tape since some people were saying it works better than covering the contacts, and it seems okay.

The Steam Deck serves every purpose a "too big to put in your pocket" handheld needs to for me, and then some. And the RG280V serves every purpose I'd want a pocketable handheld to do, play a few fun games and have good enough buttons to do so.
I have no real reason to buy any new handhelds, beyond maybe a better pocket one down the line, I lurk the threads because I just like seeing what new tech for handhelds comes out.

With desktops sorta plateauing in graphical prowess, and my PC being rather beefy, this is one of the few arenas where a tech arms race is still ocurring in gaming.

Pic related, it's the phat DS I fixed the top screen for and got a modern R4 for instead of modding it into a GameBoy Macro. Also el oh el at faggots who mod/buy a DSlite based GameBoy Macro.

Oh, I do see that image that you took of your own Google search results. Yes, Pokemon so far is the highest grossing media franchise of all time on the planet above not only Disney Princess, Hello Kitty and Star Wars, but also the Mickey Mouse & Friends Universe. No counter argument regarding that, but sales aren't the only sign of either inherent crappiness nor how good something is overall. Try not to be some kind of contrarian hipster dipshit. Oh, and believe it or not, I haven't cared for Pokemon by much since the debacle of the release version of Gen 8 aka Sword & Shield as well as Scarlet and Violet: selfishly rushed by a fucking washed up has-been Gamefreak. If he has bad eyesight, aim for something that plays GBA at about 1.25 to 1.5x of the original screensize. So about 3.6 > 4.3" when blown up, try horizontal too if they're not bugging out on nostalgia, more comfy for adults to play, if you go vertical try a grip.

Thanks. Yeah, ever since I posted that I was looking at various websites for recommendations and I ran into more or less the same conclusions you did, but the issue is that none of these people seem to have OG color schemes, they mainly deal in transparent ones or unofficial colors when I basically just want the same colors as what I currently have. The only ones I've found are the JCD guys on AliExpress and from Googling around they're like third closest to OEM quality. FunnyPlaying and Extreme Rate are apparently the closest to OEM quality with JCD following after but the latter two don't have the OG color schemes or ones that are slightly off. You also don't want to opt for any transparent shells from what I was Googling because they're prone to cracking and since they're not as thick compared to solid shells they feel like cheaper plastic than OEM.

>OK so its not actually that cheap when you take into account buying a new sd card, postage, tax, and the chance of it getting stopped by customs and a fee levied on it
>OK so there's no availability because each unit is artisanally produced by a blind one handed child working in such poor conditions that he thinks about lifting the bucket every pico second
>OK so the screen is cobbled together QC fail parts from a phone assembly line and you can tell
>OK so the dpad feels like its made of gelatin and registers the wrong input half the time
>OK so the speakers are placed nonsensically and buzz like crazy sometimes
>OK so the body is made of recycled condoms and sadness and will make your hands smell weird
>OK so the ergonomics are terrible and genuinely kind of baffling
>OK so its a refresh of a product that had glaring flaws with none of the flaws addressed
>OK so its another device using this outdated chipset that was originally designed to control washing machines
>OK so the controls and screen aspect ratio are optimized for games the device doesn't have the power to play
>OK so if you turn the device off in the wrong way you can brick your SD card, but only some of the time, for no reason
>OK so its a baffling product nobody asked for but will sell anyway despite not being particularly good at anything
>OK so overall I'm going to say that this is overall a really good device for the price despite the obvious huge problems I've listed in the review

>If you can read Japanese maybe.
I'm the contrarian, don't put VI on a pedestal and I can. It's not even that hard, it's a game written for children.
The FF series today has writers who are praised for tackling more mature themes, being less juvenile and yet even Ishikawa, Matsuno, Komoto & Maehiro still write their prose so that even the most developmentally stunted 12 year old can understand; if one can even call it that.

Never doubt the power of buyers remorse & sunk cost fallacy.

That anon was sperging out super hard for no reason and I apologize on his behalf, but I have to say that I do far prefer the naked pixel look on these modern pixel displays.

>FF IV, FF V, FFF VI, FF VII & FFVIII
>written only for children
Only if you exclusively played the versions that had substantially-pervasively censored pre-1994-1995 NOA approved translations like the chickens they were at the time. Ditto for FF VII remake for woke $0yny arguably worse policies regarding overt sensual content and most anime tropes in games.

The last line makes me think he's describing russ since he didn't mention the hinge type issue in his flip review once. (Plastic has nothing to do with it, the hinge style itself was what made it a bad hinge. The v90 hinge has worse plastic, but that was better.)

A bunch of different devices, if you think for a minute you can probably tell for most of them, some of them are quite general, some very device specific

I forgot about the clamshell copes, I was at the character limit anyway.

Can we have a new thread soon?

I have a good story to tell but don't want it to disappear in the bottom of the thread.
