Similar to how people have HP mental illness (also a basic evil wizard plot). I think it's the boarding school thing. If you were lonely during 90s you had friends you could hang out with. The romance helped too. Disk 4 is really trippy. Also it's a retelling of Wizard of Oz which has hooked people for close to a century, maybe some of the same algorithm.

I get that point, but I still find it weird. There was a day in which I decided to lurk the different videogame boards and there was a FFVIII thread in v, vr, vrpg and even on vmg. At this point I'm surprised I haven't seen some post on /vst/ asking if FFVIII can be considered strategy

no, i gave it up last time at the end of disc one. im replaying it again to finish it. the junction system is so tedious. good music and more quistis dialogue will make me stick it out

It's not the best but it's a damn good game even today. I did a replay a couple years ago and I think it's held up really well.

My replay was on windows and my initial play was on PS1, I don't know what the windows version may have changed so some of my enjoyment of my more recent playthrough could have been due to some changes. That being said I'm pretty sure they changed nothing or things that were of no consequence as the game felt the same as when I played the first tie except for the fact that I used an xbox controller this time.
