I'm getting back into collecting Game Boy/Advance games, and I wanna get some version of the first Super Mario on it. Which would be better to pick if I'm playing off an original model Advance?
It seems like Deluxe has more content but uses the full size cartridge that'll stick out like a sore thumb, and the GBA one is just the NES version with worse spritework but uses the smaller cartridge.

Does your GBA have backlight? If not may just be better to buy a cheap Famiclone for $12

I took have been interested in trying SMB Deluxe though after just playing the regular NES game this way. Seems it's mostly the same aside from the cropped screen and new co-op mode which I'll probably never use anyway

I tried so hard to 100% Deluxe as a kid

They add some new stuff like finding five hidden red coins on every level

nah, I have the stock screen in it. I don't really mind it as I have the worm light for it and it works fine

I'd go with Deluxe for the content, but make sure to replace the save battery before starting or else you'll not have a good time.

Not a collector but I've always thought that if I were one I'd get pic related. The packaging is god tier and it's the more 'authentic' version. Deluxe is more of a remake/remaster really

Deluxe was the first time I played SMB2 but to be honest having the screen be so narrow sucks a lot for platformers. It's better to just play the original or All-Stars.

Does it save after every level like All-Stars? Because otherwise I cannot imagine how it's possible for someone to beat this shit with that screen crunch. The original is already almost Battletoads-tier

Deluxe does have a save feature, yeah. You can save during each level actually

I checked the prices, looks like GBA is slightly cheaper on average, you are right that SMB Deluxe has some extra features like the map screen, though with these prices for something basic like SMB I think you might still be better off just getting a standalone handheld for it, or just get a flash cart so you can play both versions

Boring answer but nobody should be paying $30 or even $20 just to play SMB1 in 2024

not op but I bought deluxe for like 15$ like a month ago from a local used vidya store

DX is God awful.
GBA is running a custom NES emulator.

NES Classics is ugleh.

the gameboy color game has interesting features, but they're all wasted imo because of this stupid feature they implemented where you can't see in front of you all the way, so there's a button you press to look ahead when you need to. its really stupid and ruins the game, but they did it because the aspect ratio of the gameboy is very weird.

the way they adapted the mario bros game for gba is much better, you can see the entire play area as you play, even though the aspect ratio is a little different. there are interesting youtube videos that dive into the math and logic of how they did this if you're interested. imo all the nes games ported to the gba were done really well.

Deluxe without question. Only pick GBA classics version if you demand a vanilla identical play. In every other regard deluxe blows it away.

>>10807370
I didn't 100% it until I was an adult. The score attack challenges are really demanding.

you can't actually tell unless you're running it on a GB player or emulator, at which point why are you not just playing the original version?

Deluxe is a remix with a bit different physics, I'd rather play deluxe on the go and and super at home. Its pretty good to see an nes game on gb since there were not that many and but a lot on game gear. The graphics pop if you have an ips.

Go fo DX. As others stated Classics version is a NES emulated game with scrunched sprites. If you want to play the original game might as well play it in other hardware.
DX was specifically designed to be played on the go. Yeah, you don't see the full screen but it's designedin that way, you miss out on some stuff but they added extra stuff to make up for it, like secret eggs to collect. You can also save, you have a worldmap, unlock stickers, unlock SMB2jp, it has an awesome vs Boo mode and multiplayer though you might not get to play multiplayer. It's full of features that you won't feel bad that some levels are more difficult because you cant see. Yeah perhaps not the best way to play SMB but it was a SMB designed to be played on the go and on a small screen. All the bonuses make it a worthwhile experience.

just emulate the nes version on ur phone

I played a lot of Deluxe as a kid, it's good but if you want the real Super Mario Bros. experience you wont get it there, it adds an overworld map like in later games so that you don't have to restart from 1-1 every time you get a game over. It does have a lot of fun stuff though, like race challenges and secret Yoshi's throughout the levels.

>> No.10809684

>>10809676
Also the biggest problem with Deluxe is that the screen is cropped because of the format of the GBC, so you get a really limited view of the map compared to the NES version, which can cause some problems on the more difficult maps.

>> No.10810407

>>10809684
that's the thing, it's not meant to be a better version of SMB1, it's meant to be a portable version of SMB1. Yes some levels are more difficult but since you can save between levels it's not the end of the world, you're supposed to be playing in short sessions. To make up for having less field of view it added new content that made use of the newperspective with the red coins and the yoshi eggs you need to find in each level.
And yeah, it also has SMB2j and an awesome vs Boo mode, not to mention other unlockables like stickers. It's a great way to play SMB on the go. Perhaps the original is better but the GBA Classics SMB1 is not a port, it's an emulated game with scrunched sprites and you can't save anywhere and ony includes the first game. OP will get more mileage out of DX.
