I wonder if the original gimmick was control animals, and that got whittled down to you play as a wolf, and you can kind of play as a hawk, and you heard some sheep for like five minutes.
It would make sense.

>re-use the "Link transforms against his will in the dark world" gimmick
>re-use the "Link has alternate forms with unique abilities gimmick"
>both were already done a thousand times better in previous Zelda games
This is why Twilight Princess will always be a turd to me. It's literally just a bloated version of Ocarina of Time with shitty gimmicks that were already done better earlier in the series. Some of the dungeons were pretty great, as well as the boss battles, but that can't hold up the entire game. Also, the tears of light shit was terrible and I can't believe it's a gimmick that stuck around for Skyward Sword, too. Literally just turning the game into a Banjo-Kazooie-tier collectathon in order to pace your progress. Thanks Nintendo.

Legit hilarious to watch the Zelda team come off of Wind Waker, a game with some of the most flawless and timeless art direction imaginable, and then just nosedive right into the "brown n' bloom" meme at warp speed. Over 20 years later and Wind Waker STILL looks good, while Twilight Princess looked dated before it even launched.

Any of the 3 transformations in majora shit on the wolf form, all you can do is dig, talk to animals, and use midna to que attacks while going through a shitty bug hunt 3 times. In majora the deku scrub form can
>blow bubbles as a projectile weapon
>spin
>allows you to skip on water
>lets you speak to other dekus as if you're one of them
>has its own unique instrument
And that's not even mentioning all the cool shit you do as a goron and zora.

This was what made me hate it. I could have probably let all my other complains slide, but the fact that, for the start of the game, they forced you to explore every new area as a wolf to do a basic bitch collectathon before you were allowed to actually explore the area as Link was such a fucking ball-ache, and probably one of the first egregious examples of padding/time-wasting in a Zelda game. It's not even like the Triforce charts in WW which were thrown in to replace dungeons thanks to time constraints; they actually just thought this was a good gameplay idea to smack the player with at the front end of the game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/13089/eiji-aonumas-gdc-2007-presentation-a-lupine-direction-and-minish-cap

>Knowing that I had raised the expectations of end-users by promising that a realistic Zelda was on the way, I knew that I had to come up with something brilliant, something that would take advantage of the look of the game. My staff suggested that changing the environment would change the gameplay and looking to past Zelda games which use the contrast between two different worlds, dark and light, past and future, we thought to incorporate this idea again. This is when the idea that Link would transform into a wolf was proposed. The idea of Link’s transformation into a wolf came from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, in which Link transformed into a rabbit in the Dark World. We wanted to change Link’s environment, but we also wanted to make a completely different skill set available to him in this new environment and thus create a completely different style of gameplay. We wanted him to become an animal, combining the ideas of both the wild and heroic into one. That’s how we came up with the idea of the wolf. I was also scolded by Miyamoto who said, “It’s hard enough to get a two-legged Link to move around in a 3-D world convincingly. To consider a four-legged wolf is something an amateur would do." I knew that what he was saying was right and would eventually regret having even tried it, but even if it was a challenge at the time, I thought that this kind of disruptive breakthrough was just what the staff needed to change their way of thinking.

>> No.10790818

>>10790814
That said, the idea was still half-baked because Aonuma decided to fuck off and go play with Capcom instead

>I had no doubt that this was the right direction to pursue, but having set the framework of this new direction, my work was required on another project. I left the realistic Zelda team to work details and began work as director of The Minish Cap for the Game Boy Advance, which Capcom developed. Even in the weakening Japanese market, the Game Boy Advance install-base continued to grow. The market seemed to have stabilized and as one of the titles that would help sustain it, Minish Cap was very important to the franchise. Also, because this game involved Link moving freely between the normal world and the microscopic world of the Minish, which was very close to the idea that we were shooting for with the realistic Zelda, I was very passionate about my work on this title. I felt certain that the way the gameplay changed as the environment changed in Minish Cap would have a positive effect on the development of the realistic Zelda. In hindsight, by immersing myself in the Minish Cap project, I gave myself a way to escape from not being able to find a breakthrough on the realistic Zelda project. I regret that I might have been too selfish, thinking that I could just leave my staff to come up with the solution, but my mistake in thinking caught up with me.

Man cannot help his Toon Link addiction

>>10790818
Also funny to hear him talk about Minish Cap being so important when I feel like it's one of the Zelda games people remember the least. There was next to ZERO buzz about it in the lead-up to its release. Even the fucking official player's guide for it had a poster for Twilight Princess instead.
