When I was a kid, I'd probably say 3. But the only one I ever really enjoyed and finished when I went back to them was 2.

I think my favourite is 3&k, but if we are talking about 3 standalone I am picking 2.

3 but you need & Knuckles.
Otherwise 1.

3 even standalone. Blue spheres is peak and minute Carnival Night all the zones are solid

Sonic 1. 2 is too long, while 3 is somehow even shorter than 1 on its own but even longer than 2 when locked-on.

2 is the most well-rounded Sonic game. 1 is still great, but isn't as refined. 3 is also incredible, but it can drag on a bit too much and the best levels are in & Knuckles.

Most definitely 3, it’s DELIGHTFUL, just fucking spectacular even on its own just amazing truly. The soundtrack oh my GOD, the graphics are like perfect they’re just excellent. The themes don’t overstay their welcome the controls feel just right it’s just fun man like so, so, sooo fun :3

Sonic 2 has Chemical Plant Zone though which is like such a vibe.

And Sonic 1 has superb early 90’s vibes and just fuck man all three of these games have like the greatest soundtracks of ANY VIDEO GAME.

Sonic 2 has some fun romhacks such as "Sonic 2 XL" and "Bubsy in Sonic 2"

I've played through 3&K more times then I can count really. I've played 1 and 2 less times, mostly through Sonic Classic Heroes instead which puts them back-to-back with some S3 style things like elemental shields.

It's actually pretty crazy how all 3 sonics have timeless, spectacular, banging ass mother fucking soundtracks that add to the atmosphere of each levels that no other games really hit. Well, smb1,2,3 have very memorable and great soundtracks, but they are not on the level of musicality that sonics osts are. Ffvii is one I can think of where the music hits like sonics does.

My buddy had this rom hack, he was awestruck when I figured out you could run off sonics fat. Seeing him in a week to see a NJPW show. Hoping we can make it to chemical zone this time.

Everytime I play 2 and 3 I get a nagging desire to drop the game after Chemical Plant and Hydrocity respectively, while 1 captivates me with moody atmosphere throughout the game.
Now, standalone &K is pretty damn good too.

I cannot play 2 vanilla anymore.
Drop dash, actually flying tails, super cancel, 5th emerald not being annoying, I love all those things.
It is a solid S tier in the series with a few fixes.

2 is easy to pick up and replay and is good fun but 3 is easily the best of the trilogy. they're all good though.
