Maybe some japanese devs could foresee what Sony would end up like? I mean disregarding Japan completely and becoming a californian company.

The PlayStation 2 was notoriously difficult to develop for in it's early days. Mikami complained about the lack of proper documentation and development kits, and knew that Sony was taking the piss, and did so in an attempt at vendor lock-in.
