It's a game that can be considered a second major milestone in fighting games after Street Fight 2. It was an experimental game and I have super mixed feelings about it. The style is easily the best FF game but I like Special/Real Bout's rosters more and Real Bout's gameplay more. The story is almost good but I feel like it loses me thanks to the Jin brothers being kind of mediocre antagonists. Mai's redesign wasn't it. RB2 is truly peak FF but I wish more fighters were like AOF1/3 where the story isn't about a tournament and was more like an action flick where all the player characters happen to encounter each other. Garou is fine but it does reek of "giving up"

Before CotW was announced I was hypothesizing a possible reboot of Fatal Fury that combines FF1+3's plots where Yamazaki kidnaps a young Rock Howard alongside Franco's kid under Krauser's orders. But then SNK blew me the fuck out and did a real ass Garou sequel which I prefer over trying to catch people up because it means they're genuinely confident enough to move forward versus Capcom always trying to recapture SFII's magic

But yeah for both a series called Street Fighter and out of all the Fatal Fury games none of them really truly live up to that "Street Fighter" namesake since they're all fucking tournaments. 6 tries but then 6 has no fucking story so what's the point? It's practically a pseudo Persona game where you just date the cast

>action RPG around South Town like the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. SNK games were always lore-rich, thing is if they have the knowledge to develop such large-scale titles.
This has been my dream reboot/retelling of Fatal Fury for years. Imagine Terry running around, getting into street fights with local thugs or wanna be fighters, taking up part time work like washing dishes at Pao Pao Cafe, working out at a gym to raise stats and getting trained by Richard Meyer, playing pre NeoGeo snk games in an arcade, maybe have cameo extra boss fights like Ralf and Clark hanging out in a bar on shore leave, piecing together who killed your father and spying on the Geese syndicate. All this built around a calendar system where you have the King of Fighters tournament matches as major boss fights with all the original games opponents. Those oil barons should be funding it.

Would be neat to see a AoF4 with aged up characters with a plot taking place as background events to one of the Fatal Fury games going on at the same time. AOF's plot is typical of beat'em ups, it's literally Double Dragon/Final Fight. I almost wish it had actually been a beat'em up, that would have given the series a more unique niche within SNK's lineup and the characters could still have been fighters in KOF anyway. It is but keep in mind that the fighting game genre was born from Nishiyama trying to make Kung Fu action flicks into video games. Street Fighter was born from his previous experiences making the Kung Fu arcade game (one of the first beat em ups) and Fatal Fury was his attempt to make "Street Fighter with more story"

Fighting games were basically beat em ups that cut the mooks in-between to focus exclusively on the boss fights until Street Fighter II changed that. It's a fun arcadey idea of being able to fight the "bosses" and nothing else kinda like what Cuphead was supposed to be until they added the run n gun levels
