10778416 No.10778416 [Reply] [Original]

Lets discuss this underrated classic for the original Playstation.
So, just to settle this once and for all: the MC (the Rookie) is NOT Togusa, despite the confusion led by the localization booklet. There's several instances during cutscenes where Togusa is there and they explicitly talk to the rookie, who is another character. Basically you never see the MC, it's supposed to be your own self-insert. You only see the fuchikoma.
Also, wow, did anyone see speedruns of this game? So cool, should be a more popular game for speedrunners. Surprised it was never on any soeedrunning event, but maybe it's better that way.

I think calling it underrated is a gross misinterpretation as it was very popular in the 90s. Even found my old ticket to the theater to see the movie, hard to believe it was $4.75 and they gifted a pack of cards and magnets too for seeing the film. The manga garnered a lot of interest, even got the creator to design some mice. The game was one of those launch window games of the original Playstation I had to get because not only is it of a license that was fire in its day, it played damn well with a cool soundtrack too.

It was featured in one of those GDQ side events on YouTube. What I'd really like to see are rom hacks. The game has a lot of cool movement options and it would be really cool to have some levels that use them to their full potential.

Eh, I don't think this game is gfcore. Sure, the GITS theme, anime drawings and techno music is definitely appealing to girls, but good luck getting a girl grasping the controls on this one. Also while the game is cool as fuck aesthetically, it's very male-oriented with mostly only mechs in cold, industrial settings.

>>10778689
It's underrated because it's way better than what most people give it credit for.
Sure, most people who put at least the minimum effort into learning how it plays end up liking it, but most people's reaction for this game is that they don't play as the Major and that "You just control a spider tank thing" and they never figure out how to strife or dash forward/backward.
It's still a classic, sure, but a bit underrated. It's one of the best 3D action games on the PS1 from a gameplay perspective. It's insanely good.
Bandai even tried to copy them Fuchikoma controls on the PS2 SAC game for the tachikoma and failed to replicate it.

One of the coolest games ever made.
I have a copy of the soundtrack, and the artbook.

Its biggest flaw is how simple it is. It is a LOT harder than reviewers at the time said.

It is SO damn charming though, I just wish the translation was more in line with the movie, so "refracted light" was "therm-optic camo". Even sadder that it's off as the cutscenes are lip-synced around the US Dub audio.
I think a boots on the ground shooter in the universe at that time would be pretty close to if not exactly Perfect Dark with dual analog stick control.

I found myself regularly switching between the two during my playthrough on an emulator as both were fantastic. They had a very simple core, but polished it as much as physically possible.
It's like a super-polished Doom game.

I stand corrected. It was an earlier PS1 game for me, but not launch window. My memory is a bit hazier given my old age.

>>10779781
Well, I've always liked it. It was really cool and took advantage of being fully 3D in its day. Being a Shirow property was all the more reason as his works were very popular then. I don't recall anyone being disappointed the main play was not the Major, since there were times in the comics she's inside the Hutikoma or they were goofy sentient on their own (sort of like Disgaea Prinnys). There is a pretty cool FPS recently which I remembered that did the Kusanagi justice as the robo-girl.

During one of the cutscenes one of the guys asks if it's really okay to send the rookie to a dangerous, key mission, and Motoko says something like "lets put that training to test".
I think the main idea Exact had was to get the player involved as if YOU really are a rookie at Section 9 under direct orders from Motoko, instead of playing as an existing character.

Really? I dont think so.
And even if that was the case, how is it related to ebay?
Why dont I see you complaining on otjer threads like Sonic, Mario or Final Fantasy that are actually here 24/7 all day every day all year?

Cease your whataboutism cretin. Those are franchises. This is a singular overpriced 5th gen game exclusive to one console.

Oh just noticed that. I play on my CRT at 4:3 but it's cool seeing it like that. Kinda makes me want a widescreen CRT.

Wait, I played the demo back in the 90s and I dont remember it being so hectic. Did I just suck at it? Can you play it that fast normally?

The controls are really good in it, maybe you just weren't accustomed to them yet? The game hits full throttle by the second boss in the sewer and you're pushed to keep up the pace with increasingly fast enemies.

If you don't people harass the shit out of you. Someone actually started a harassment campaign against a mastodon instance I ran because we "didn't have a rule against antisemitism". Apparently a rule against racism and religion doesn't cover that.
