So /vr/, do you have retro gaming friends?

All of my friends (who have been gaming since 1992 or earlier)
just don't appreciate anything behind the current releases.

Where in the hell do I find retro friends without them being humongous faggots?

I found one recently in IRL, and shortly after talking about Super Metroid he pulled out his laptop and said, "This is an Alienware laptop, it is very powerful. I have been trying to hack Apple the past two weeks but I haven't quite cracked the code." Jesus Christ.

>"This is an Alienware laptop, it is very powerful. I have been trying to hack Apple the past two weeks but I haven't quite cracked the code."
Fucking comedy gold.

I have a friend I met on a smaller chan who's into retro games. It's nice to talk to him.

>> No.1077963

I've been trying to get my brothers into retro games since they were old enough to play games.

It seems impossible: they hate any sort of challenge or complexity and are easily seduced by gimmicks and skinner box techniques.

I remember they were watching me play mega man. I let them play, explaining the basic controls. They gave up on it once they got to particularly agile enemy (cant remember which one) they didn't die they just stopped playing right there.

When f-zero gx came out I tried to get them into it. They went off-course on the first map and decided they didn't like it (until than I didn't even know it was possible to go off course on the map, appearently theres a very small gap in the railings during one of the turns I never knew about)

If they can't master a concept in a few seconds they stop playing.

Maybe I should get them into jrpgs or something.

>Where in the hell do I find retro friends without them being humongous faggots?

I feel you OP, I ask the same question. I'd like a friend to play games with irl.

>> No.1077997

I have four friends who play NES/SNES/64 with me.

I plugged in my SNES at my college, and started playing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, and no one wanted to play with me except this one black guy who later told me he never really plays vidya and was just killing time until his next class.

I feel lucky, though, to have friends that appreciate retro games.

>> No.1077998

Just make it seem so damn cool and fun and awesome that your friends can't help but be interested.

You don't need your friends approval to be validated.

No, you don't, but it's nice to be able to play some Contra with someone without them bitching about the graphics for example

>> No.1078013

I have a retro friend, but he's a coworker that lives far away.

Other than that, it's just me. I don't expect to find anybody else IRL that appreciates classic games.

Anyone else bothered by "gaming" being used as a verb like "All of my friends who have been gaming since 1992 or earlier." I'm not sure why but it's always bothered me when people do that or call themselves "gamers".

I have a friend who plays vidya on a CRT.
But not by choice, he's just on a really tight budget.

I guess that doesn't, count does it.

>> No.1078035

Sadly, not really. All my friends ever want to play is Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. They're not too into older games (Most of them like shit like Final Fantasy etc but that's the extent of it). I'd kill for a bro to play Contra or Battletoads with.

I like playing games on CRT. Even for newer games. Most new games look better on a CRT because of the real black and many console games still don't natively render at higher resolutions.

I have found that playing on real hardware and real cards tends to catch the attention of young gamers these days.

They've all experimented with emulation, so playing on your laptop or Wii isn't really exciting to them. But playing on the real thing is a novelty.

>> No.1078210

I have a childhood friend who got the SNES around the same time as me. We played together all the time on his tiny black & white CRT that eventually was retired for a color one (seeing SMW in color for the first time was an amazing experience).

Recently I get a text every Saturday asking "will there be games?", followed by him coming over for a play session spanning everything RetroArch offers and lasting until the middle of the night. Sometimes we play contemporary titles too, but even then we usually end up going back to RetroArch after a while. I prefer the simpler mechanics and "pure" gameplay of 90s games.

Occasionally we choose a real shit game and try our best to beat it, no matter how broken and awful it is, alternating between who's playing when the anal frustration gets too strong. There is much fun to be had in discussing the horrible design decisions taken in some of these stinkers.

It's sad to see so many of you guys have no one to play with. I'd invite you over to my house as long as you shower regularly.

I have a couple friends who play Final Fantasy, they seem to especially like the first 7 or 8.

Unfortunately for me I have never played Final Fantasy, though I plan to when I finish my complete Megaman binge (nowhere near the end; I've played almost all of the canon classic series but there are still romhacks and fangames to play).

It's true that they don't really have a point to them and are looked down upon, but they shouldn't be looked down upon to the point that you derail the whole thread because someone uses one. That is several magnitudes more shitposting than any number of emoticons could do.

Emoticons might appear on /b/. I wouldn't know as I stay away from there. But, meaningless fighting for the sake of fighting is something I commonly hear /v/ do, so shouldn't we work to avoid it here?

Same here to an extent. My asian girlfriend has typical asian friends and we live a few towns away from where my highschool friends are and I rarely see them. We are both quite lonely over here and don't have much in common as far as games go. So most of my gaming is done alone and maybe once a month I can hang with my friends at one friend's house and play nes and snes all night, which is pretty awesome but I wish it was like it was when we were younger ;( (that's a sad face emoticon please don't lose your shit gals)

Getting older sucks. We never knew how awesome we had it as children and even as teenagers. Now I work 8 to 6 every weekday and my friends have different schedules because of school as well as part time jobs and the fact that I have to take a toll bridge to see any of them makes it a little worse, AND the fact that I'm the only one with good income so I can spend 10$ on gas to go there and back for a meet up. I just want to have a sleep over and play games or meet somebody in my town who plays games. I bought a boxed famicom game off a guy who seemed cool but he was wearing a hockey jersey and sort of had that "I'm such a nerd" vibe but I think I could have been friendlier to him and asked if he wanted to play with me (would it be weird if somebody asked you that after buying a game from you off craigslist?)

Yup, but I'm probably the one that's more into retro games. Not thay dislike them, but it's my "niche" so to speak.

Me and my friends started to hang out in highschool because of our love for emulated snes games, and the rest is history.

(Which coincidentally is one of the reasons why I always chuckle at MUH ACURACY purists, because I remember a time when running snes games AT ALL with a poorly coded speedhacked emulator and poor sound on our terrible computers was a moment of triumph)

I find that dorm living exposes me to many folks, what I do with the N64 is draw people in with a game they know and remember, and then introduce a game they've never heard of, like Blast Corps or WCW vs. NWO World Tour. It's a good time, though I rarely get repeat customers.
