Always thought the 2nd Sega Genesis model looked very good, it makes the Sega CD work aesthetically, and the black Sega Dreamcast is quite pretty, too. 90s Sega had great visual design on their hardware.

For Nintendo, the original grey NES has a nice and comparatively unusual minimalist design language. The way cartridges aren't loaded through the top, but rather by opening a little door on the front to slide one in and pressing it down, it has a look and feel of its own.
Of course, in practical terms it is janky and prone to certain wear problems, hence why nobody else did this, but it's fixable wear and once you're aware of it, you can avoid it in the future.
In the late 90s/early 2000s, Nintendo was riding the Macintosh meme with translucent colored plastic, which looked so-so on the N64, but quite nice on the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance.
I wish there was a GBA SP in Atomic Purple.

I think that 7th gen is one of the most fundamental shifts, because then you start seeing couch co-op disappearing in favor of online play, which did exist on consoles earlier, but only for some titles, now it started becoming standard.
DLC would start becoming codified, some were basically like full fledged PC game expansion packs of old, just distributed digitally, but the vast majority were smaller, often cosmetic or small time bonus stuff of modest substance. It's also where the obsession with open world sandbox games began setting in really hard.

I think these are some very fundamental and important differences which sets that generation apart from 6th gen, which basically just was an evolution of 5th gen.
Overall, 7th gen was the last truly fun console generation to me, there was lots of good stuff there (and lots of cool indie stuff would get wider market spread, meaning it wasn't just big budget corporate stuff).

However, 7th gen went on for a very long time, and console gaming has not actually developed much at all in all that time, rather it has stagnated pretty badly. AAA gaming is very much in the Disney-Marvel style throes of making the games as widely appealing as possible according to calculated formulas as to ensure maximized profit, which means these games are REALLY blurring together because they're all doing the same most profitable formulas.
Also there's lots of gambling and pseudo-gambling cancer now.

It's no wonder that the industry is reaching diminishing returns on some points now and that we're seeing layoffs and writeoffs.

I think a lot of consoles has some innate beauty to them. Normally I'd post those combo systems, or the full briefcase PC-Engine, but today, I'll go with the GameCube. From its size and colors, there's elegance to the whole package. The subtle ridge that keeps it hard pressed to an edge, allowing for cooler air to be pulled in by the fan, to its handle for personality, unique shapes for expansions underneath, down to its petite size which is very appealing. It is special even in its default state.

I agree. Seeing 360 and PS3 games on this board would be weird because to me, those still feel modern. DS and PSP, not so much, but I can see why people would still be iffy about the idea. At the end of the day though, they're both handheld systems that launched before the major 7th gen consoles, so I think they'd be a better fit here. I've even pondered what it'd be like if the Wii was allowed here, but it doesn't have all the same arguments in favor of it that the PSP and DS do.

I also love the nomad, chunky bastard. Can't believe they are so inflated now though, when I got mine I remember thinking more than 70 USD was a ripoff. I mean it's great, but i wouldn't pay hundreds for it unless it was modded already, and frankly I'm still waiting for bennvenn to replace his screen replacement before I think of that (all for authentic screens but damn the base screen makes games like alien soldier totally unplayable).

NES seems to be getting cheaper too. not the collector bait like super rare games, but hardware was cheap last i looked and even if games are inflated you can just get a flash cart. 6th, well you got me there. I'm just lucky I got my fill and don't care to go back (plus you can emulate everything except Xbox, which is cheap to buy and mod so whatever). GBA is rough I guess.

7th is not fucking retro, but even if it was it's a cakewalk.
DS is easiest in the world to pirate on and consoles are easily found, PSP you get one cheap from Japan and you can hack it for everything (rip batteries though), 360 are dirt cheap even for an rgh mod slim that won't RRoD and will load everything, Wii are still cheap shit (literally see them at goodwill for 10 dollars) and dead simple to hack and get everything free (including GameCube so you can dodge the retarded prices on that shit). Only thing that sticks out to me is PS3, I don't know a lot about it and maybe some exclusives pull big money. And legit dual shocks are not always easy to find. Overall though? 7th fuckin easy. I'd say buy up DS now because it will be worst off soon, the rest are just too trivial to pirate on to worry about IMO.

the "it's been 200 years already why isn't the industrial revolution part of the Renaissance yet" argument is still worth using, even if mods are tards. If anything the naming is poor (really none of what we call retro is "retro" but god help you if you attempt to use words reasonably in gaming world). Anyway, the notion that "old" be the sole criteria starts to feel worthless. I refuse to accept that there's not differences between previous game systems and the first HDMI consoles. And for arguing they are retro simply for being old? time has stretched. The industry has stagnated too much for too long to claim that 10 years means anything. Assassin's Creed 1 is 17 years old and it doesn't feel at all like a "retro" game. I mean hell, go back 10 years and people are still playing fortnite. go back 7 more and you get orange box. TF2 is still supported despite being nearly 20 years old, do we call it retro too? at some point the collection of everything that happens to be "old" under a "retro" umbrella will render the entire concept worthless. Should be done as eras and recognized as such.

>>10780393
all good mi, don't know what you mean about snes, you figure 7th buying will go to shit soon? I mean timing wise it should, I just don't know what or when. Cant find it but just think about that for a minute, why do we have such stupid and generalized terms for videogames, you cant even call it "evolution" because there's such massive hardware differences in almost every generation.

Making it look more like a VCR than a console was part of soothing skittish retailers and distributors in the US after Atari (who used to dominate the market) completely buttfucked themselves and tried to offload all their excess stock on the market in desperation.

The consumers didn't particularly care, and the design was reused in Europe out of convenience. The US Super Nintendo looks outright ugly and cheap versus the original Super Famicom design (or Sega's various iterations of the Genesis), but it played games so that was all that mattered.

tl;dr blame the middlemen

Videogames are clearly divided into two categories. One is pixel art, the other is polygonal graphics. A few games combine the two, but that's to be expected. These two categories overlap almost entirely two other categories: 2D games and 3D games. Again, some games combine the two, but that's not a problem. These hybrid games can be talked about in either category, as well as have their own category so that their commonalities can also be discussed. There are also two other categories that sonewhat overlap the previous two: multiplayer at home VS online multiplayer. All these categories are also divided in time. The shift occurred in the late 90s and early 00s. Everything from the 1st half of each category that was published after the early 00s is a revivalist videogame. Revivalism is its own thing and can't really be discussed like the things it's trying to revive. Revivalist works are often anachronistic and ignore previous technical limitations. This shows that revivalist media is its own category. Pixel art videogames also tend to have more soul than polygonal graphics videogames. This is a consewuence of shifts in marketing and in the public's criteria for commercial appeal. This is due in part to chsnges in technical limitations, but also the area in which politics and social changes have influenced the videogame industry. That is to say that modern bullshit has sucked the soul out of most videogames.

Yeah, and most people seem to hate that amp from what I remember. It's too expensive for me anyway, but thanks for the msg.
I've always wanted the Peavey but there's so many iterations of the same amp I'm getting a bit put off at this point. I will probably get it once my health improves. Just can't play anything when I'm having procedures and surgeries left and right.

I recommend just building a 2x12"
and putting speakers you actually like
You can build build it out over time
the peds and head you choose matter most+pickups anyway
I don't use the full-size cabs for most rehearsals

Yeah, I built a 2x12 a while ago, to the specs of a certain Orange 2x12 cab, using a baby bedroom Blackstar amp - sounded good, especially with the speakers I used, but I'm still after the sound of the full-sized, high gain amp that I'll hopefully feel up to playing again.

Yeah, also people tend to not be good at EQ and can't figure out why their setup doesn't sound exactly like Metallica/Megadeth

i didnt care for blackstar due to it choking reverb on the line in inputs
what speakers did you pick?
ive had vintage 30s, greenbacks & settled on gt75s
(i need clean, dirty, more dirty, and sludge all on a whim)

Blackstar is just an introductory brand for metal, imo.
This small company called Warehouse Guitar Speakers whose selling point was making their version of classic speakers for a fraction of the cost. I got their version of the Vintage 30 called Retro 30 for $70, but now it looks like they don't supply to any retailer anymore, plus they are charging $140, double what it used to be. Anyway, it's more versatile than a Vintage 30, slightly less bright(but still sparkly) and slight more bass(but very tight) and still it's a very transparent speaker - made even the tiny, shrill Blackstar sound very good.

The dogbone controller looks neat at first glance and it feels nice to hold in your hands, the dpad is a hugr improvement, but tragically they messed up the buttons, not only are they smaller but too fall apart so Mario-like plattformers just dont feel good to play, specially with the upward right position of B & A.

Specially when you already hold on the SNES controller and otherworldly comfortable it felt with Y & B.
