SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, official Anbernic store, official goRetroid store

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Just avoid the RG Nano
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with lower prices, better specs, but weaker build qualities
TrimUI: Good build quality, shitty software with no good CFW alternatives

>How do I get games
Google: tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up on your computer, throw them away, and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.
- No one cares if you're fresh from /v/.

I see its ability to play real carts as a gimmick. It’s how it plays the games that matters, an analogue gives you the best build quality, best aesthetic design, best display and best LCD emulation. Nothing else can do that.

That looks like chinsy cheap shit midget box, you have no taste.
Analogue Pocket looks exactly like a slimline GameBoy pocket in the correct scale.
What you posted looks like what it is, cheap. The screen is also cheap. It also can’t emulate the look of the various LCDs of the original handhelds because it’s low resolution.

You think the analogue pockets only superiority to this is that it can use real carts? That’s the actual gimmick. It’s the parts quality, screen, emulation quality and build/design why they stay sold out.

I have Etsy product reviews
>Case & Grip for Retroid Pocket 4 and Pro 2-in-1 3D Printed - Etsy
EpicPrintingShop makes a must-have grip/case for the Pocket 2S with better ergonomics than the official grip but it isn't a must-have with the Pocket 4 and 4 Pro. The ergonomics are good on the case but not to the sheer extent as the Pocket 2S, since the 4/Pro already has decent enough ergonomics to not fatigue my hands while holding it normally for an hour or so, and the design hampers access to the volume rocker. I will probably cut off the part of the top-most clamp that covers the volume rocker and see if that doesn't compromise the case's ability to grip onto the system. 7.5/10, Not a huge improvement over the official grip on this system model (Remains a 9/10 or so on the Pocket 2S, highly recommend buying one for that system instead of the official grip!)

>AXEEZ - For Odin 2 ( and some Retroid Pockets)
Ordered the Mid and Tall sizes.

I love the idea of a taller thumbstick replacement for the Pocket 4 and 2S, but AXEEZ are not good for this. They don't fit the system very well! To be expected since they were designed for the Odin 2 and not the Pocket 2S and later, but the increased height makes the stick slam against the device's shell (or the screen...) and drag along thickly against the device if it has a rubber cap on it. The seller recommends Skull & Co. stick caps for the AXEEZ but I didn't find any that were really good enough to keep them on the stick. The best were the "Skin Grip" and "CQC Elite" style grips for Switch joycons and Switch Lite, which were billed by the seller as being best for the Mid sticks but which ended up fitting all of them with no issues because the actual stick topper doesn't deviate in size, just the length. Additionally the Steam Deck grips were a poor fit for either size of stick topper and were an especially poor fit when put onto a Retroid Pocket. There's no point to these for a Pocket device, stick with putting them on an Odin 2 if you must have them. 0/10 they did not work, the original sticks are better in every way!

The problem with emulation is that you're always aware of it and when you have to compromise on something because of price, like the chip or screen size, you are constantly aware of it and constantly aware that it's emulation every time you go into the emulator menu to mess with settings forever because you can never make it feel "just right." Emulation takes the magic out of gaming, it removes soul from the experience.

I'm just as aware of when I'm playing an emulated version of a game as I am aware when I'm playing the original cartridge/disc, in the exact same sense that I'm aware when playing a game on PC and aware of when I'm playing some shitty touch screen mobile shit. Especially when that shitty touch screen mobile shit gets a quick free to play PC port.

They're different experiences and they're both enjoyable for different reasons, though I believe the physical act of putting in each individual game cartridge is mostly nostalgic and if I didn't grow up with it I would likely find it to be tedious as fuck now. Different strokes for different folks, so long as they're enjoying retro games. Emulating is only a compromise if you specifically collect or have autism and need the physical stimulation, as you can do infinitely more and run games better with emulation usually.

Imagine paying $200 to emulate the problems with the GameBoy's hardware. This is so fucking stupid and it doesn't even do it properly. Each pixel is on a 4x4 grid where the first nine pixels are filled properly and then the bottom/right line of seven pixels are left blank, and the pixel-to-gap ratio on the original GameBoy Pocket screen was most definitely NOT fucking 3:1. You can't even see the fucking gaps between pixels normally.

And I say GameBoy Pocket because that pic uses the GBP colours, not the original pea green dot matrix GameBoy. Actually, what the fucking hell IS that fucking filter? It has a fucking GameBoy Color bezel/power light, it has the GameBoy Pocket's black and white screen colours, and then it has the fucking original GB's pixel grid effect. This is retarded in every direction. UNLESS it is ATTEMPTING to make GameBoy games somewhat look like what they would on a GameBoy Color without the colour swapping feature?

If I need a controller for my phone, the DS4 is the best home console controller to use, but clipping a phone to an actual game controller fucking sucks. It's not portable, pocketable, requires setup, pain in the ass when needing to use your phone for ANYTHING (including answering a call), it's just not fucking worth the hassle at fucking all.

I would sooner recommend a clip-on controller that hosts your phone in the middle, in which case you just search for the one that's in the price range you're willing to spend with the ergonomics/button placement you want. Personally, I plan to get one of these Ipega controllers for my Galaxy Flip 5, but I wouldn't recommend this Ipega controller unless you specifically had a flip or folding phone.

I also forgot to mention how fucking to-heavy and uncomfortable it is to clip your phone to a controller. It makes playing mobile games that can use traditional controls amazing to play with the improved inputs alone, but the fucking top-heavy weight makes it bullshit after ten minutes. A proper controller grip for your phone will prevent that entirely. And even though most controller grips can fold, there isn't a controller grip in the world that will be able to form-factor close your phone over the controller's buttons and analog sticks. At least... not yet. I've made some concepts for a phone controller that can just fold over the phone, doubling as a case to protect the phone when closed. But it's always going to either be top-heavy as fuck, or the entire thing will be heavier than an Xbox to counter it.

>waah waah, not all phones have the same dimensions and no design will be universally form-factor with every single phone!
I don't fucking care, it can be a centimetre taller than the phone itself, I was considering two general basic fit-enough designs to cover most models. They wouldn't be like actual phone cases where you specifically need the exact design for your specific phone model to line up with the buttons and camera and shit, just a clip that relatively covers the screen when closed.

Those are pixel shadows, you can kill them on Shader Parameters since they don't look too great on 480p, cranking up Neighbor Blending kills spacing too. YMMV since this is on PC and chinkhelds sometimes show shaders differently.

To be fair to Nintendo, they managed to pull it off in their homeland so it tracks that they were butthurt enough to do the same globally to try and prevent rentals.
Remember when EA tried to implement multiplayer into everything and tack online passes onto games in the 7th gen to prevent 2nd hand game sales and everyone gave them shit over it? That's exactly what Nintendo would have done, had they an online system absolutely anyone, at all cared about.

Way nicer screen, more power, better connectivity to my tv, I haven't played Dolphin on my 9+ but it worked fine on my regular 7 so I can only assume it's better on the 9+. Here's the catch, though: the S7 and S9 have decent battery life. The S9+ does not. It's like a few hours of doing something then time to take out the USB cable. Getting a laptop that doesn't suck shit is at the minute nearly impossible, you can get an m1 MBA, which will not suck for approximately 5 minutes, after which you will want to use something that apple doesn't like, at which point it will suck shit.

Modern laptops are too thin to cool the overpowered CPUs manufacturers insist on shoving into them, so they have noisy, whiny fans, their screens aren't good, their keyboards suck, using windows or Linux with a touch screen sucks, track pads have always sucked, their high voltage components mean battery life sucks, which means big heavy batteries requiring a high wattage charger for battery life equivalent to a shitty $100 phone

if I needed a computer and I was on a tight budget, I'd buy a cheap laptop, because it does everything you need and for the money the cons are tolerable, but I'm not on a budget, so I want something optimised for the use case I have in mind

DS is a more powerful system in many respects than the N64 but it has a much more conventional architecture than the N64, which makes it easier to emulate and thus you need a less powerful device to do so(like most handhelds capable of full speed PS1 emulation could probably handle DS emulation no problem, the actual limiting factor is the lack of a touchscreen on most non-Android emulation handhelds meaning you'd have to use weird workarounds on any games that make extensive use of the touchscreen)

Dumb question but do the Android handhelds have touch screens as well as buttons? Is their UI the same sort of Android as is used on phones or a proprietary build?
My ancient handheld, an old LG Enact phone, got wet and the buttons are wonky now so if I can't find a way to repair it, I'll have to get a new handheld. I hate new things.

My RP2S, RG405M, and RP4P all have touch screens and regular android in them. Look up whatever device you're interested in because each will be running a different version of android to suit whatever chip it has or something. Yeah.

>Is their UI the same sort of Android as is used on phones or a proprietary build?
Stock, though you can use frontends to make them better they get weird sometimes. For example, my RP2S has the best build out of the 3 Android chinkhelds I own, with nifty shit like a setup wizard, button combo virtual mouse that keeps you from using touch screen and easy disabling of Play Services for performance, but for whatever reason its power off menu doesn't accept controller inputs. The X28 (critically defective, don't buy), on the other hand, is incredibly bare AOSP deal and the thing is literally named "Game devies" internally, but it does accept controller inputs on the power off menu. Finally, 353V has the worst controller support where a lot of android menus simply don't accept button presses.

I'm looking for a handheld under ~80-90$ (including shipping and EU taxes, fucking retroid) that can play 3d psx games (and Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, been meaning to play this game for a while) , but most importantly I want to be able to use the analog sticks without having my (medium sized) hands cramp after 20 minutes. I bought a R36S and it was so uncomfortable for long sessions that I returned it, so I'm guessing a horizontal handheld would be better, also Wifi would be really cool.
I was considering getting the RG35XX H during the upcoming sale, but I've heard the analog sticks only really register 8 directions ( as seen in https://youtu.be/hcKELSS6B88?si=iUTjoNe60eM6IR9V&t=171 ), and it likely won't be fixed unless Anbernic makes their OS open source.

What are my options ? I could get the RGB30 on Gogamegeek for 90 dollars, but I have no idea how comfortable it is.

TLDR: looking for a 80$, horizontal handheld, can play PSX, has analog sticks that are comfortable to use.

My DS lite had fucked hinges, too, and set me against hinged things in general and why I got a faggot Moto phone rather than AstroSlide5G phone, despite AS5G having a physical qwerty like my Enact. The Enact slides out and since I've had it from 2013 up to the recent water fiasco, sliding is clearly superior to flipping.
I would have gotten an F(x)Tec Pro1 phone (another, newer QWERTY slider) had the company not made the short-sided decision to make a 4G device so close to 4G ending.
The AS5G technically slides out, too, but it's also hinged for tilting the screen and that hinge looks weak.

Depends what you wanna play. For square-shaped content (GBC/8:7 NES or SNES/NGPC/PCECD), as well as GBA thanks to a perfect x3 integer scale, the RGB30 is better. For 4:3 stuff like Sega consoles (MS/Genesis) or early 3D consoles like the PS1 or Dreamcast, the Flip will probably be better. Though I wouldn't recommend stick-dependent games for either of them; the RGB30's sticks aren't that good, and the flip just has bad stick placement in general.

I play games in the bath & while playing MMO's and multiplayer games that have some sort of queueing or waiting involved. If I still went to see my GP regularly instead of phone appointments then I'd carry it along with me, I still use it every now and then when I get a bus too.

but most importantly I've tried a few different types of bathtime gaming, I've taken an older TV in there I don't have a use for and plopped it on the shitter, was okay but too big and heavy for regular use.
I've tried monitors and a laptop, laptop was underpowered for gaming natively, streaming was shit without ethernet. Monitor's alright but ultimately I still need/have to take a keyboard/mouse in and there's downtime in taking it, the cables/power supply out the bathroom. If you've got a small bathroom, it's kinda shit to have electronics kicking around.
A handheld's a better middle ground, carry it in, continue, take it with you when you leave.
Other funtime bath activities you can try: reading a book, taking a 10+ year old bluetooth speaker powered by AA batteries in and listening to podcasts or music.

>now that we’re all old fucks
> Do you like using shitty speakers or headphones and tiny, washed out screens?
I am indeed an old fuck, my eyesight sucks and so I'm looking for screens in the comfy 4-6" range, that's alright at arms length and I can use reading glasses. The DSI XL taught me that and screens are getting better since they're all surplus/cheap parts anyway.
Speakers are a PITA but that's handhelds for you. I like headphones a bit but cabling in the bath's a pain, only really use 'em if I wanna slow trickle the hot water in for a while or blast it.
>I don’t use my OLED TV and floor speakers is for DS or 3DS games for obvious reasons

I'm not an old fuck and don't have money to burn, but I do have a TV and a gaming pc. Handheld gaming isn't about portability, it's about posture. You can sprawl out in bed with a handheld, or sit on the couch, or go to the park or whatever. You can also play games immediately right when you pick it up, without having to boot your pc or turn on a controller or change a TV input.
It turns gaming from something you do in a dedicated space that takes a second to start up into something you can do in any position anywhere in your house.
My rate of actually finishing retro games skyrocketed when handhelds made playing them that much smoother.

The plastic is cheap, yeah, seen some complain about easy scratches, but not in a deal breaker way for me. What really irks me about that price tag is the RK3566, okay chip for what you want to play but it doesn't do N64 and DC well at all, it sweats with Duckstation if you ever need slightly better PS1 emulation, shader support isn't great and it can choke on seemingly mundane MAME at times.

Hadn't you been strangled by taxes, I'd suggest you to go for the RP2S instead, better build quality, massive performance leap, can do sleep and idle, quite better pad, buttons and sticks. That said, as an owner of both I keep going back and forth so that should tell you they're both great.

One thing to note with RK3566 devices, don't let it discharge completely, ever. That makes battery metrics go crazy and then you have to open it and pull the battery to reset it.

I only get devices when there's a significant enough leap in performance and features. I've been into this scene for around six years now, and I've only bought five of these in total:

1 - GPD XD, back in like 2017. They're kinda laughable now especially for the price, but the competition was absolute ass so it seemed worth the cost. I did play with it some, but the experience was iffy enough that I never did much in the way of "committing" to a playthrough. Eventually sold a couple years later when I needed some cash.

2 - Odin Lite, around late 2022. Hadn't had a dedicated emu device for a few years, mainly played on a modded 3DS with some emus, but naturally you can only do so much with it before the limitations become annoying. After some research, discovered this new wave of handhelds, and heard Odin Lite was both premium, and capable of doing up to GCN. Sold it the same day it arrived, cause fuck me the input lag was unplayable. Used the money to buy...

3 - An Anbernic RG353V. I felt burned after the Odin, so I decided I'd try again, but wouldn't spend nearly as much. The 353V wasn't as powerful naturally, but after doing the tape fix, I was perfectly happy with it for all my 2D gaming. It was the first one of these handhelds I really "dedicated" to, going through several games from start to end (including my first time beating Chrono Trigger, Metroid 1 and 2, and somehow katamari on PSP). Was overall happy, but the 3D gaming was a pain (literally, I'd get a bit sore after a bit). But a little over a half a year later, Retroid announced...

4 - Retroid Pocket 2S. I wanted to stay pocketable since that portability's what got me really invested in the 353V, but having proper shoulder buttons and hall sticks in a non painful location was a huge selling point. I honestly would have bought it even if it had the same specs as the 353V, but the fact that it could do all dreamcast, and a handful of GCN, made it a no brainer for me. Barely even cost me anything since the 353V's resale value almost covered it all. I've been happy with it overall, but decided to upgrade to the...

5 - Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. Basically was just a 2S with gamecube games and a higher res screen. I held off when I heard about the issues it had, but since they've all since been fixed I went for it. Waiting for it to arrive but it should be here in a week or so. I figure, either it lives up to expectations and I got a new toy, or it doesn't and I resell it, get my money back, and continue in my 2S bliss.

TL;DR, only bought systems when I "needed" it and been pretty happy living that life.

Device feels solid and decent to hold for something as portable as it is. The fan isn't as intrusive as I thought and is more effective than I expected, but you still shouldn't play gen 6 for too long especially PS2. Overall pleased with it, it really basically is just the 2S but better imo.

Powkiddy, since you're here doing promo for old crap, can you tell me when we're getting a v90 sequel. Please add a better chip than the miyoo flip.

Thanks,

That's true to a point, but there reaches a point where that buffer is so big that you literally cannot effectively play any game that requires quick reaction times, and I wasn't getting a whole ass Odin just so I could play turn based RPGs and visual novels.

Of course there's also the matter of the price. Odins are priced at a hell of a premium the lite was the "budget" model and I was still paying well over $200 for it, so if I'm paying big bucks, I better be getting big bucks performance.

Is the input lag on the Odin 2 actually that bad or you're meming? Literally no one talks about it other than Russ and even in his review it he just said it was worse than other handhelds, not that it was unplayable.

I should clarify I'm not talking about the Odin 2, I'm talking about the lite, before they did the update for the input lag fix (which took like 8 months to come out)

With anbernic's sale I can get an rg35xx h shipped for $65, the only real competitor for a horizontal that price is the RGB30 right? That one seemed appealing but the talk of build quality and housefire charging is putting me off it, is there actually a tangible difference there?

I love 4chan because it can be so elitist that anything less than literal perfection will be treated as absolute garbage, while also being so contrarian that they'll say "input lag doesn't effect games" with a completely straight face, just because someone else told them it does.

This is the first time I've seen this kind of retardatuon, desu. I would get if he plays rpg's or stratagy stuff, but he comes off as the type that plays shit where you legit cant die so inputs wouldnt matter at all. Could also just be another retard getting anal over his faviorite handheld. Anbernig and miyoo fans got nicknames for a reason.

ok so im using retroarch and ive noticed that the analog thumbsticks in every single game dont actually do anything but emulate a fucking D pad, that is nothing but on off, 8 directions, instead of actually being an analog stick in games that i know support them and dont act like that, like spyro 1 for ps1

how the fuck do i get thumbsticks to actually work right in the controls in retroarch
