Those who played Wave Race 64 at release - what was your reaction?

was great. Still one of my favourites

It's kino. Shame there's only 9 tracks. I play it at least a couple of times a year it only takes like 45 minutes to beat hard and mirror mode.

I wish it would get decompiled so we could get 60fps and a level editor

I owned wave race at launch.
It was ok, my reaction was that it was ok. I enjoyed it.

Music was incredibile, the racing was iperfun, the tricks, go underwater after a jump and water management (expecially in the storm track) added a lot of fun stuff. Also headbutting in 2p mode. The only thing that surpasses it is ssx.
But I was 10yo, so my glasses are super pink

Such a good game. Love the color palettes for the racers/watercraft, especially the alt colors. They truly evoke that late 90s feeling like few other things do.

It was one of the first N64 games I owned along with Mario 64 and Gex. Always liked the music, atmosphere, and gameplay. Not that anybody cares, but there are actually two soundtracks, the original and the Player's Choice (the one I got) which replaces some of the guitars with synths and blah blah blah

Shouldn't you be out talking with your new friends anyway

An excellent tech demo. It would be great if Nintendo made Wave Race 3 later in N64's lifespan to expand the game once more cartridge space would be viable. They did rerelease the game with rumble support in Japan after all.

As a kid it was my first N64 game and I was very surprised to find out it was a very good game, since like every other kid, what I wanted to play was SM64. I always liked that you can play the game just fine with one hand only by using the Z trigger to accelerate. Also the AI in the hardest difficulty is very satisfying to play against, not rubberbandy at all. I think the only thing you can hold against WR64 is the small number of courses, a course creator mod would be awesome. Finally, for me, its M. Jeter and Marine Fortress.

One of my favorite games for the console. The graphics looked fantastic, the music and environments are extra comfy and the gameplay is very fun. The way they recreated the waves was amazing for its time. A little too short, but racing games are very replayable and this one is no exception.

I saw it on display at Kmart alongside Sega Rally and Bubsy which happened to be on the ps1 at the time. While impressive since the whole idea of texture maped 3D at home was still amazing I felt the graphics were on a similar level to what the ps1 or Sega Saturn could do. I did stare at the system for 5 minutes trying to judge what was the best. I didn't really appreciate the wave physics as I assumed a whole bunch of these types of games would come out soon. Wave race was good but the first time I saw Ridge race and Tekken I literally couldn't believe graphics could be that good. For comparison on my pc at home I had a game called FX fighter.
At the time I totally was into the hype that most developers would just drop the ps1 and move onto the n64 and going forward that backing the ps1 was a dead horse. As for the gameplay I felt it was not particularly fast or exciting but decent though I appreciate it a lot more these days.

It's a short but fun title. Also, graphically, it's ahead of many N64 games, despite being a launch title. ...And 1080 Snowboarding is a sequel, despite what you may think. The characters are related.

Always liked it, but this shit is too hard to me. I can only beat normal mode... barely. I even tried to learn it some time ago, with no luck. There's some finesse to sharp-turning, zigzagging and breaking tides that I can't grasp. Oh, well... Still have plenty of fun with the usual 6 tracks from normal mode though.

I played it on kiosks, it was the most amazing thing ever. I remember using the waves to jump over obstacles was so great because even though it looks great I really didn't expect the jet ski to react to individual crests and throughs of the waves like the real thing. They nailed the physics along the graphics, how rare is it for a game that looks so much better than everything else to also play so much better?

Game is 10/10 perfection, all tracks are different and have their own vibe, you have mirror, you have infinite TT to get too at, tricks multiplayer, custom configurations, perfect control, perfect gameplay, 3D chrome letters, what else do you want? It's still unbeaten, no watercraft game is this good.

If you want to beat TT you need to master fat boy and learn how to custom the jet ski for top speed.

Thanks. I can only play with the first guy and the girl. Jeter, if I remember correctly, is the third one. I thought his turning was too sensitive, whereas the fat dude is hard to turn with. Maybe I'll try again as you suggested. Any tips for zigzagging or to avoid losing control to waves?

Miles Jeter is only useful in the ice track and the tunnel track Marine Fortress
, the rest Dave Mariner is the one to use. The track with the fog Drake Lake (Milky Lake) might be useful to use M. Jeter but I forgot on that one.

Hell yea I've been waiting for a Wave Race thread. First game I ever 100% completed as a kid. I've seen 1080p emulations on Project 64, and still looks good. Probably one of the best mesh wave designs as well. I didn't realize it when I was younger, but the game is pretty short as well, and it's nice to have a creative little world that doesn't require 100+ hours to play through. I'm genuinely glad I got to play it when it came out. Ended up giving away my cartridge to my friend's younger brother when they moved away, haven't played the game since. Maybe I'll do some emulation in the future and revisit this game after like 25+ years.
Dolphin Park was also one of the best parts of a game, and it's still nice to see games add on practice areas or special modes like that. Was mind blowing shit when I was younger.

>>10772194
Dave Mariner all the way. Turning becomes easier when you have downwards momentum. Make your turns when you dive. Hairpin turns won't be as tough once you figure that out.

>>10770379

Dude the commercials for that game when it came out were on fire. I didn't even like sports games and I went out and bought it. It was a great time.
Now when I play it. It reminds me of a time in America's past when we had busy Malls and high expectations for our Nation's economic future. I miss those times.

Spent yesterday playing Wave Race 64 and Episode 1 Racer. Honestly I kinda feel like Episode 1 Racer is more technically impressive because of how huge the tracks are and the sheer volume of the art design. I dare say this is an under-discussed game on here. Wave Race 64 is great on a technical and challenging level, but it's kinda short. And dolphins are cool. Everyone knows Diddy Kong is the actual best racing game just to be clear.

Anyway, we actually got Blue Storm at launch, and both my brother and me think it's still really good, even though the Internet now tells me that that's a really controversial opinion

Jeter is a little tricky at first, but once you get used to his sensitive turning you can easily take the most complicated turns. I was also using Hayami and Stewart at first, because they're the rounded characters, but Jeter gave much better results in hard mode. Use the analog softly for the easiest turns and harder for the most complicated ones.

Blue Storm isn't bad, but personally, I think it lacks the same easygoing vibe 64 had for something slightly inspired by extreme sports that were especially big back then. The hidden announcer might be one of the best secrets in videogame history

>Considering the rivalry Sega and Nintendo had back then, probably wasn't a concidence.
Wrong. It was a coincidence. There was no real rivalry. When Sega left the console business, Hiroshi Yamauchi (then Nintendo's president) was devastated and even mused financially helping the former. He shortly left the company, and Nintendo carried on by sheer will, because the mood was awful in Japan.
