ayo, real quick,
lemme drop a dime on ya...

we name is Floigan, that's F to da N,
we come talkin' bout bidness, cuz we ain't no fren

we got dogs in da yard, and a big ol' spliff,
bouta pipe down some shawtys with dem big ol' hips

we got Colt in the can, and a 9 in the hand,
and now it's bout time ya hear da master plan...

we come from the past, to bring some news,
"Floigan Bros. here to fight the jews!"

with muscle, wit and Floigan force,
we return from '01 to correct the course

but we can't do it, not without you,
and not without the man who said Floigan will do

Bernie lookin' down, guardian angel,
saw the future in us when we was still on the table

casting dreams, on a Moigle and a meme,
Big Bern and SEGA brought Floigan to da team

and now it's time, that we done some work,
the junkyard's closed and we loadin' the hurt

the jews on the run, early passover,
it's bout time for Mario to move over

now the dream is cast, and we sellin' out,
but we ain't leavin' on a single doubt

the plumber's dead, and Bernie too,
but the future is bright for Floigan and the crew...

That sucks but it's honestly time for Dragon Ball to end. I don't know how they can put out shit like Orange Piccolo and Black Frieza and Gohan Blanco and not realize they're completely out of shit to do. The Tournament of Power was the perfect ending (although the new Broly movie was kinda neat) what with Goku conquering the multiverse's most powerful fighters and on top of that it was as good as Super will ever be. There's a reason they haven't bothered adapting the silly shit that happened after that in the manga in to anime.

Rest in peace, king.

I've never been a huge fan of his works except maybe Chrono Trigger designs but his impact on worldwide geek culture is undeniable. Dragon Quests which I've played and some of DBZ games are genuinely fun.
I wanted to watch Blue Dragon sometime, guess I can start today.

Genuinely sad, this man created something magical. Yes, I went through a phase of "dragon ball is too normie!" but thankfully it didn't last too long, only when I was like 13 up to 16 or so.
Dragon Ball will always hold a special place in My soul, watching it with my dad and friends, playing the SNES and Sega games and then the PS1 games, reading the mangaz buying the movies in VHS, buying art books, posters that I still have and adore. Especially one art book that was a gift from my dad.
Thank you Toriyama! You did some cool art with funny characters and sexy girls, and changed the lives of millions. You made my childhood and pre-teen years much better.

Why exactly was Chrono Trigger so cursed? Didn't Japan suck it off tremendously? While not FF7 wasn't it a significant JRPG success over here? I don't think I've heard an explanation on why they never made another one, and the only semi-sequel-I-guess was this Radical Dreamers remake with tenuous ties to CT. They even became Square-Enix at a point. Now that I try to answer my own question, I guess Sakaguchi was busy with other shit and by the time he could have pivoted to CT again he was persona non-grata at Square. I dunno man. It just seems fucking gay and nonsensical that we never got CT2 and miss me with the Cross apologetics. Shit BLEW GOATS.

As far as I'm concerned Dragon Ball ended in 1995 when Goku left to train Oob.
I still enjoy GT and Super (really liked Zamasu saga actually) but I see them more as a different era of DB. Well, GT was still retro but not canon, and Super just happened too late and Toriyama was just giving indications and helping a bit but it wasn't the same.
Nobody can ruin Dragon Ball, the 1984-1995 run is immaculate and should be considered humanity heritage.

If that were the case Mickey Mouse would have been fair game a long time ago. And of course it only matters in places that acknowledge copyrights. There's been bootleg DBZ shit in Central and South America for decades. Somewhere in Brazil there is a place with a graffiti mural, it's Vegeta in the local soccer team's jersey. He's holding the decapitated head of Raditz, the body of raditz is in the background and he was wearing the jersey of local soccer teams rival. I have no evidence of this but I know it exists. There might be multiple instances of it, like mayan and aztec pyramids. Only the Simpsons can compete.

Being blunt, I never cared for Dragon Ball, not now, not 20+ years ago. Maybe if I was Mexican I'd enjoy it more, but for me it never clicked.

That said, I appreciate other works of his, and he had an incredible legacy and influence. Chrono Trigger is one of the few JRPGs which capture me, and Sandland is underrated and forgotten. I always liked the way he depicts himself as Toribot.

People keep saying this but it's not true. Toriyama dis have a half dozen or so variants of each feature that he would mix and match but that's way more than most artists do, particularly manga artists. Something like Evangelion is ACTUAL sameface. Remove the hair and you can't even tell male from female. Meanwhile I bet you can tell Bulma from Android 18 just from their eyes, nose, and mouth. Toriyama was more of a caricature artist in that sense. He had way more distinct variants of eyes and mouths than most of his contemporaries. That's not even getting into his real talent for monsters and vehicles. Even his backgrounds were way more intricate than people realize.

>> No.10758845

>>10758838
You don't have to like his works, but the scope of everything's he's done is where the respect is. Nobody says they're going to redefine the entire industry and influence the world, and Toriyama back then probably just wanted to do what he did best: make silly jokes, draw, and get a paycheck.

Toriyama fell and hit his head, which is extra dangerous when you're getting up there in the years, he was 68 or 69. Ergo, Sleepy Joe, who is presumably approaching his bicentennial, is just a roll out of his bed at night away from death (and thus Kamala presumably has him belted in place to prevent this).

NES versions have bugfixes and improvements compared to Famicom versions; but there are some localization changes, most notably getting rid of crosses and references to christianity. First game script is full of faux old english but that's heavily toned down in 2 and gone aftterwards.
You could always use delocalization patches but then it's going to be a headache for you looking up the names of items/towns/spells, even if you use the patches that supposedly revert some of it. There is one patch for 4 made recently which uncensors the graphics but doesn't touch anything else.

Anyway, they're fine.

>Not just the more scifi stuff, but the pacing and less focus on adventure in foreign lands.
The later portion of Dragon Ball was more about that than what you're describing.
In the "Dragon Ball" portion of the anime, only two arcs are what you describe, that being the first arc and the Red Ribbon Army arc. Three of the other arcs are tournament arcs, and and the only other arc is a fairly standard "Fight the demon king" storyline where it is more about fights than exploration.
The Namek arc is ultimately far more about this exploration than any arc prior outside of the first one.

Yeah i guess i should specify, it wasnt an immediate drop off for me, but a decline. I liked the fights and world martial arts tournaments spliced into the original, the last Piccolo fight is my favorite of any fights (really that whole tournament). I would probably be fine if the series ended on Namek, its more so everything after i dont like the pacing of and tone with its vast empty wastelands. I actually do like the concepts of the Android and Buu arcs, i just dont like the execution. I guess the alien origin reveal also rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe if it had been set up and hinted in the older content, it wouldn't come off as such a genre shift to me.

the pacing was miserable, id unironically rather watch one piece

that said, dragonball was the GOAT
i remember the only episodes of Z that i really truly enjoyed were the bulma/yamcha/krillin comic relief episodes, since they felt so much more like dragonball
Z always was just constant powerlevel asspulls, and everyone looking like david lee roth, but with even more screaming

>There's a reason they haven't bothered adapting the silly shit that happened after that in the manga in to anime.
The anime was never an adaptation of the manga. Toriyama gave drafts to both Toei and Shueisha, and Toei's drafts ended at the tournament. The manga arcs were Toriyama working more directly with Toyotaro, and the recent films were him working more directly with the anime staff (which would've culminated in the most involved project for him- Dragon Ball Daima).
>>10760337
Dragon Ball changed itself constantly. It was initially a gag manga, but took on a more serious tone with Bora's death and later Tenshinhan's character arc (into the Piccolo arc). The alien reveal was a similar change, where Dragon Ball is constantly moving and adapting itself to never get bogged down, it's why even for people who don't like them, the Cell and Boo arcs are still seen as generally fun or good. They have a lot of 'motion', which is what many manga at the time and today lack.
Where Yudatamago and Kurumada would stick to rigid tournaments or successions of 1v1s (which isn't bad mind you), Toriyama would shuffle the deck around. He'd go from tournament, to adventure, back to tournament, to a demon king storyline, later he'd have all the main characters killed off in one brutal fight, have the gang play hide and seek on an alien planet, and then do the inverse with the next main antagonists on Earth, followed by an arc where the main antagonist was essentially a gag character.
Contrast that to the modern era (pretty much the 2000s to now), where most battle manga tend to have the characters standing around and talk about how awesome they'll be, or the old days where characters would fight in one place for 60 odd chapters, and you can see why Toriyama so easily enraptured people.
Helps that he's a genuinely great writer, and saying he wrote it on the fly is more a compliment to his ability than anything.

Shit has me really sad though, i think this is the most any celeb death has fucked me up. Dragon Ball has been a constant in my life and I'm realizing I witnessed the rise of a meteoretically influential story that is on the same level of cultural significance as shit like Tolkien's books, Dracula, and maybe some fucking aesop fables and it just happened to start getting popular during my childhood. We all are going to witness our favorite creators to leave this world eventually, then we'll leave too. The worst thing is that its going to happen more often as we get older. Eventually, there will be none of our lifelong/childhood idols left.

The best we can do right now is keep all that legacy relevant by holding onto it in our hearts and gain inspiration from it. There will be no new stories from the author but at least we can appreciate what was already done.

I, personally, never watched DBZ past 1st episode and only read first volume of the original manga. Now I'm thinking about watching the entire thing and play some games, I have a whole ocean of content to dive in.
Toriyama's death got me sad too, but at the same time, I was reminded of something important, that no one will last forever. If I want to create something myself, I should do it now.
I'm gonna use that burst of energy for as long as it will last to make out the most of it.

That's probably what he would've wanted everyone to do.

We were spoiled. A lot of the things millennials and Gen Z are huge fans of started showing up in the 80s. Whether it's popular anime and manga, Saturday morning cartoons, or video games, a lot of it isn't THAT old so the people who pioneered it we just took for granted were still plinking away. But a lot of those guys who were in their 20s and 30s back then are now in their 60s and 70s. Shigeru Miyamoto is 71. Yuji Horii is 70. Ed Boon and Hironobu Sakaguchi are younguns at 60 and 61 respectively. Rumiko Takahashi is 66. The founding fathers of late 20th century pop culture are almost universally at retirement age. Nobuo Uematsu just announced that he plans to retire. But then you pop in Chrono Trigger and see all these guys who at the time were probably younger than a lot of us are today. I still visualize Sakaguchi as a guy in his 30s with thick jet black hair even though he's now gone gray. It's quite bittersweet, for example, seeing just how old the three still living Ghostbusters are now. Or Harrison Ford. Or Christopher Lloyd. Or Patrick Stewart. It's super easy to engage with the old stuff so often that you forget how much time has passed. You get so used to these people existing in that snapshot that when you see them as they are today it feels like they aged decades in a matter of minutes. That said, as sad as it can be, think about how lucky we were to be children and have our formative years at that perfect moment when these things were being made. I feel quite honored, for example, that I was there during the dizzying growth of the video game industry, or to watch the Simpsons from the start and lived through that period of Bart Simpson fever in the early 90s. Being one of the kids who these things were made for. It feels like the equivalent of being a kid when Action Comics #1 first hit newstands. Or watching the Wizard of Oz at it's theatrical premiere. We were the people who got to be contemporaries of Akira Toriyama.

Dragon ball is the comfier show and has better pacing than Z in terms of it's power scaling, it also introduces a lot of the cool shit you see in Z like the demon underworld and while the red ribbon army saga fucking sucks, the rest of the show keeps a consistently engaging narrative.
I feel to enjoy Z to the max you should really watch dragonball first since you'll have an appreciation for the minor characters who actually play a more significant role in dragon ball instead of just going "why the fuck is there a talking cat in a tower in the middle of nowhere".

That's because Z was supposed to be the end of Goku's story, it wasn't supposed to continue after Namek was destroyed. Hey guys, this is Layne Floigley. You might know me as the lead singer of Floigan in Chains (formerly Alice in Chains). By the way, I'm dead. Anyway, I ran into a couple old buddies of mine while I was buying a pack of smokes at the Circle K last week: Floig Jones Jr. and Tyrese Floigson. We used to shoot junk and watch cartoons together n' stuff... it was real cool, man. By the way, I'm dead. Anyway, they were telling me how there was some anti-floiganism going down 'round these parts, and they said I should stop by and have a little chat with you guys. The first thing I want you to know is that I used to be a huge faggot. Everybody thought I was super chill and friendly n' stuff, even though all I ever did was sing about depression, drug use, and suicide. I also invited a guy on stage during one of my concerts and sucker punched him for giving a Nazi salute while surrounded by hundreds of fans and security guards because of how tolerant and brave I was n' stuff, even though I had no problem directly funding murder and child trafficking by buying massive amounts of black market opiates. I even let my girlfriend get fucked by a bunch of old men for heroin money even though I had millions of dollars, because I spent it all on heroin. By the way, she's dead. Anyway, the point is, I was a total douchenozzle n' stuff. Then, I found Floigan, and everything changed. Floigan made me realize how much of a retarded fag I had been. After undergoing floigalysis, I started changing myself for the better: I started regularly washing my bed linens, I got a Costco membership, I read Mein Kampf, I stopped shooting as much junk, and I even started working on the whole me being dead thing n' stuff. Look friend, the fact is... Floigan changed me, and Floigan can change you, too. Just stop like, being all hateful n' stuff. Open your heart and accept Floigan into your life. By the way, I'm Layne Floigley, and I'm dead.

The American art is rather charming in its own way as a take on the classic designs. Wasn't it another jap artist who drew that stuff? I think it was someone who did a lot of art for Nintendo Power. There was a mini players guide included with an issue thatbi recall showed off more interpretations of the original art like the slimes. I kinda always wanted a Dragon Warrior 1 remake done as a Souls action game based around that art style and its different take on the franchise.

in that respect, the dragon warrior art utterly failed. wizardry fans mightve bought it, and been disappointed in its lack of depth. while non-wizardry fans wouldve avoided it for its assumed complexity. if nintendo power hadnt literally given them away to kids for free (with subscription), i doubt most people wouldve been won over by that box

This and its kind of ironic the pic youre replying to shows Toriyama's variety

I think the sameface reputation comes from Dragon Ball writing itself into a corner after the Frieza saga where all of the power players had to be Saiyans and the only two surviving saiyans were Goku and Vegeta and their genetic lineage, so of course they were going to look similar to each other. He not only had to make the saiyans have some distinct features of Goku in general to make it believable that Goku is a different race, but he also had to make their kids all look believably related on top of that.

I honestly think that people think he draws sameface because his faces are, ironically, so distinct. People will look at a character and be like "that's Goku!" or "that's Piccolo!" But they fail to notice that being able to make those identifications shows just how distinct Toriyama's characters are. Nobody plays Lunar and is like "that's Shinji!" because the faces don't stand out. They're too generic to be so clearly linked to a specific character. The fact that you know Vegeta's face when it's not on Vegeta's head is very telling. There are very few artists you can do that with.

>We were spoiled.
No, you had people who wanted to make cool shit and share it with the world, music, games, cartoons and so on and there was competition to get your money and attention. Competition is healthy and encourages growth and innovation. The world was also different back then, you had to go to concerts or shows to see a performer, the internet was still primitive compared to today so you couldn't just download something in two minutes. What you spent your money on, had to count. Creators knew this too, and creators who knew their shit knew not to fuck over their potential bread and butter. There wasn't a push for 'content', it was just 'can I do this?' and 'will people like it?'

Of course not everything was good and bad media existed back then simply to make a quick dollar but there was always a layer of ingenuity with most of today's well-known IP's and works. Same with video games, there was a drive to create something fun to play, and it's no surprise that the eras of the 4th and 5th generation saw the most growth and the most games released that are beloved to this day. I'd wager the indie scene has a similar feeling, in the sense that you don't need to go through a publisher or corporation to get your game out there. We weren't spoiled, we were given our money's worth.

Not him but if that's Naruto, wouldn't that be from like 1999? Dragon Ball manga ended in 1995.
But I guess I know what you mean, Naruto seems to be very popular and basically "the dragon ball of zoomers", except zoomers still like DB (in part thanks to their parents introducing it to them, and also because Super also served as an introduction for the new generations)
But as popular as Naruto can be, I also don't consider it a proper rival to DB. The only proper rival it might have is Superman

After you defeat Broly, Goku appears and tells Gohan he turned super strong and that he asked Uranai Baba to let him go to Earth for 1 day so they can have a fight. If Goku beats you, he will tell Gohan he wasn't giving his all and to try again, then if you beat him he congratulates Gohan and says he's became more powerful than him. Americans don't realize it but the Japanese had a MAJOR protect the children moment after the Pokemon seizure incident and I think a few high profile serial murders. CERO was instituted in 2003 and was and still is waaaaay more draconian than either PEGI or the ESRB. That's why so many games seem to get censored these days. It's not because of America and Europe. It's because now every Japanese game has to go through CERO, which makes it's standards effectively a worldwide standard by virtue of being the most restrictive.

To put it in a western context, remember the violent video game hearings in the 1990s over Mortal Kombat and Doom? The industry placated Congress by self-regulating with the ESRB but imagine if they hadn't done that and instead Congress issued legislation that had actual legal teeth. That's basically what happened in Japan. God of War, for example, had to cover up all the bare breasts, STILL got hit with a CERO Z, and had to be sold behind glass like a porn magazine. They don't even bother trying to release Mortal Kombat over there these days.

That's a combination of taking good care of your body but also TRT. Normally, no man at that age will be able to keep up this much muscle mass due to low testosterone. TRT allows you to mitigate that, but it raises the risk of heart problems, which I think is an acceptable risk. At this age, you're close to your finish line anyway, so I'd rather keep my ability to wipe my own ass instead of looking like a frail old man who shits his pants.
