Is there a single game where a suicidal attack is actually worth it?

Pokemon comes to mind, specifically Voltorb/Electrode if you have a good enough party afterwards

definitely not pokemon
there are so many moves that do the same damage as self destruct but don't force you to kill yourself
your team's moves would have to suck major ass if self destruction is a decent strategy for you, and at that point losing a pokemon could cost you way too much
also fainting lowers your pokemon's friendship, every time you use self destruction moves in those games your pokemon loses friendship
having low friendship affects some evolutions, return, and getting some items requires high friendship
unless you have frustration, losing friendship is a bad idea
but people that use frustration and actively try to increase it's power are monsters

What makes Electrode a good self-destruct user is how it's one of the fastest pokemon in gen 1-2. Once it's down to very low health you can just outspeed your opponent and blow up for massive damage.

It was somewhat common in the pvp scene. Most of RBY OU teams would have either Gengar or Exeggutor, which would explode rather early, after spammong status moves. Golem too had a good explosion, basically killing everything that wasn't Gengar or another Golem/Rhydon.
Never heard of an explosion strategy in-game though.

DQ9.
Kerplunk (Farewell) kills you but revives all party members and Kamikazee (Sacrifice) which kills you but either kills all enemies or reduce their HP to single digits.
Kerplunk save my butt more than once fighting max level classic bosses, Kamikazee is kind of worthless because it only works with common enemies and doesn't work with metal slimes and their derivatives.

On puzzle maps it depends, but it's viable against fort walls on battle maps.

the reason is electrode is one of the fastest pokemon in the game. If you don't like the pokemon your opponent starts with, you can blow it up. This can level the playing field sometimes. Also, you blow him up when his health is low. It's not a bad deal

There's a harakiri move in Toshinden too, done by the secret character Sho. However, contrarily to Yoshimitsu's, Sho's move is some sort of "curse", that also damages the opponent while Sho is impaling himself.
It's mostly useless, except if your enemy is playing keep away games at full screen distance and almost dead.

But what exploding does is remove the exploded from the battle before the exp is given out, so say you start with a wimpy level 1 and immediately swap to an explody mon who finishes the enemy off with a bang, then all the exp goes to the weak one without getting divided.

>> No.10766413

Khimari's is especially bad because it completely locks his party slot, so you can't even just throw him out to do a bunch of damage at the start and then go back to your regular party.

Brood War.
Sending in literally any expendable unit to rush in on tanks in siege mode, or air dropping units on top of tanks so that their splash damage hurts their own units.
Casting Irriadiate on your own science vessel to destroy literally every Zerg unit.
Using infested terrans to suicide bomb everything (usually only feasible in UMS maps)

>> No.10766685

>>10766676
In that type of game, where your units are often expendable to begin with, them being able to explode for additional damage is all upside.
In a Final Fantasy style game, giving up a character permanatly to do a single shitty attack is beyond terrible. Not to mention the added injury of not even then earning XP.

WoW Wrath of the Lich King arenas.

Death Knights used to have “raise ally”, that would raise a fallen ally as a ghoul that they’d control.
At launch this ghoul was fucking busted. Arenas being a 2v2 or 3v3 format (mostly), losing a player means you lose 99% of the time. Just being able to bring back a player albeit in a gimped form would be broken as it is, but the ghoul was actually strong. It had a suicide self destruction ability that did retard damage.

The best part is, if it was just you as a ghoul and your opponent left, you would win if you killed them with the kamikaze.
