Could someone help me with soundtrack problems?
I fucking love Final Doom's OST and I've been listening to the MIDIs. However, I just use the default Win7 soundfont and although I like how the songs sound with it I keep reading that it's a terrible soundfont. So what is the most "authentic", perhaps, or just the best soundfont to use?

I took some test pics from the example wad using GZDoom 1.8.2. I tweaked the ceiling texture so it could use F_SKY.

With fluidsynth.dll and extracted Audigy drivers you can find some 8Mb-16Mb Roland soundfonts to use with Doom.

Anyone who recommends a 3rd party soundfont, such as weeds or fluid or silverspring, is trolling you.

Here are some wads in a nonsensical format that you can extract oggs from. These aren't ideal, but, they're definitely better than what you're doing now anyway.

Doom 3 BFG ships with a Gravis Ultrasound patchset so it's clear id themselves have some nostalgia for the Gravis sound. You can also get this working on your port of choice with a little effort.

Reverb and chorus can be set to taste but I find the defaults fine, actually. Once you get into pwads with their own midis you might have to scale back the reverb and chorus so they don't sound blown out so you may as well leave them flat.

Also, look again at that dev builds. Fluidsynth.7z is at the bottom. This is just where they keep a copy of a build of it. The wiki links directly to that build I just thought it would be more transparent showing that.

Fluidsynth is a semi-big project with lots of builds in the internet. The one that they maintain is the only one that works with ZDoom/GZDoom/PRBoom.

The authentic Doom music sound is a Roland SC-55, which is an external hardware wavetable. The software alternative is Roland Virtual Sound Canvas, which is out of date and hates multicore systems. Roland VSC is not a soundfont, it is more of a system driver.

There are many other soundfonts; Silverspring, Weeds, and Fluid are common suggestions. These all have a unique sound and are across-the-board inferior to the Roland sample set.

Patch93 of Youtube has converted Roland VSC into a soundfont for use with good soundcards or a software synthesizer. Version 1.9:

Just an additional note, Fluidsynth, Bassmidi, and Timidity are all common software synthesizers. Bassmidi is actually available as an option for the midi input plugin for Foobar. So, you can then play midis in Foobar with any of the soundfonts.

Which means you can also use Foobar's built in encoder options to output mp3s of the sc-55.sf2-rendered midis.

Which is actually worth pointing out because most PRBoom ports on smartphones rely on in-folder mp3s to render the music as opposed to having native midi renderers.

I've settled on preferred old-fashioned mouse turning only + autoaim, but having playing a shit ton of Doom both ways, I don't think mouselook affects the game as much as people like to make out. Sniping is easier and I spent more time/ammo plinking away with mouselook, but the change in overall difficulty is not substantial barring specific moments like Icon of Sin.

Roland never had good guitars. Kurzweil is pretty good for that.

Problem with that SGM one is that it has pretty weak drums, Shawn's Got The Shotgun loses a lot of punch.

Alternate setup, add a soundfont manager to Windows:

Install that, set it to default, add in a soundfont, and you're done. All midi in all source ports now sounds how you want it to.

I have that feel while playing Choc Doom. The lower resolution and brightness just boosts up the atmosphere a lot. The monster sprites stick out a lot more from the surroundings when played in high resolution and look fake. It's just my opinion, but playing it the old shitty way is more immersive somehow.

The gameplay is pretty much entirely revamped. Enemies are way deadlier, but your arsenal kicks that much more ass. The plasma rifle shoots fucking lightning bolts. The chaingun mows down enemies like nothing else. The shotgun has this sweet manual pumping that feels fucking amazing and lets you shoot it fast as fuck, and it's extremely accurate to boot. You get shot and you bleed. You don't stop the bleeding and you die. You get hit by a fireball and you might catch on fire. You die a horrible fiery death if you're not extremely lucky. A spectre pops up behind you, rips out a nice chunk of your ass, and by the time you turn around to pump a couple shells in him, he's gone. A cacodemon sees you, screams, and fires a fucking deathray and you're dead. A chaingunner spots you, revs up his gun and waits for you to come out of hiding. If you come out too soon, you'll quickly notice that your body is composed more of lead than of flesh. It's an extremely brutal experience, but incredibly satisfying if you're willing to learn the ropes.

The new skins are: Stormtrooper, James Bond, Cyberjunior (basically a scaled-down Cyberdemon), Halfman (Doomguy with his upper body missing), Super Mario, the Mars 3D hero, and Wreck-It Ralph.

I made a simple trap with monsters teleporting in, but for some fucking reason the Mancubus won't teleport into the room. Cacodemons & Pain Elementals sometimes will teleport in late, very little will they not at all, which I guess I can understand cause they're the only ones that can fly, but the damn Mancubus won't go through even after passing the teleport line multiple times. The lines are larger than their hitboxes, so what the hell is up?

Also, I'm a new mapper myself, but most setups I've seen use several teleporter lines in case a monster manages to cross it when the teleporter destination isn't clear. You want it so as they amble back and forth near that top wall they're bound to cross one eventually.

Not so good really. It's very short, kind of bland looking, rather strong lack of ammo forcing you to rely on shotgunners for it (and there is an unwelcome number of them that welcomes you), and sort of confusing with a few switches that seem to do nothing besides open up monster traps with hitscan enemies in them. The most unimpressive portion is where the moniker comes from: Train. You start out in a room-within-a-room. One look out the windows reveals a room with scrolling textures on the walls, giving a slight illusion that you are moving. You can enter the next room which is obviously stationary, and then go back into the "moving train".

So...4/10. Mediocre.

Terrible wad in which none of the doors (aside from key doors) are marked. Monsters are thrown at you with little thought and in great mass, and seemed at one point to be unbeatable (had to clip through over a ledge). Though who knows, maybe I just missed an unmarked switch on one of the walls (which are all the same green brick texture).

The only interesting thing it did in my opinion was make the computer-map more or less necessary to win.

yes the main thing is to try to make sure the monsters are attempting to teleport as often as possible so they go quickly when the destination point clears

"eventually" isn't good enough, there's few things more annoying than waiting for one or two stragglers to teleport out of a giant holding area

and there's a whole science to making monster teleporters fast, many different ways to do it each with their own advantages and drawbacks

Scraping Away the Flesh

A flesh-textured outdoor map that starts you in a center room with several switch. Each switch you hit lowers some walls, opening up more monsters and more switches, revealing more and more of an open plain where you eventually fight two cyberdemons. Not a terrible concept, but because everything is flat and you never have to fight that many monsters at once, the only thing notable about the combat is that the health and ammo are fairly tight.

Brothers. There is but one way to do this.

We make a "HA HA" sort of spin-off to that shitty series with an acctual plot [fuck me] and it basically begins as so:

The scene scrolls over the landscape of Hell. Inhuman screams of rage echo throughout. A gib flys across the screen as we pan to doomguy. his rage so unparraleled, so massive, that he is capable of punching even the most powerful demons to death in one hit. His unending rage is stemmed from his loss to such a WORTHLESS combatant that Cheif was. Hell is being torn asunder, as the doomguy rips it apart without effort. Hell, now being the doomguy's bitch and absolute servants due to pants-shitting fear of him, offers a solution. But it isn't pretty. And the doomguy is in such beligerent rage, and defying common sence, goes for any means to get back at that worthless peice of childish chewtoy that is the Cheif.

He's so fucking angry that he WORKS with hell to get back at that bastard. He, using powers given to him by the very forces of hell that he once fought tirelessly against and he now rules over, ensures that some battles are rigged, so that he can build himself a grand army.

Within time, his army grows. Caleb, Duke, All previous losers due to bullshit reasons and actions, are drawn under his power.

The world thought the original invasions by hell were a nightmare? Try them under the command of our glorious god.

As time goes by, Doomguy resents the very being that Cheif is. He grows less human with time, calling the forces of hell towards him as he becomes the very thing he fought against. his armor and equipment melding with his flesh.

Doomguy's new army arises, and in time, hell invades again. The doomguy knows they will retaliate, and that the eponymous "master cheif" will step to the plate.

The doomguy's form clearly no longer human, new, demonic appendages growing out of his very armor. He throws the master cheif into a special section of hell.

That's right. Back to E1M1.

I think it's supposed to play it pretty closely. Zdoom is based on Doom, but it took large parts of Hexen's code, and can even play Strife damn well despite Strife's code never even being released, so I wouldn't expect it to handle Heretic badly.

In the demo, it was reversed. The dude at the counter gave you the unwinnable mission, the guy in the bar was the one you needed to talk to in order to proceed.

Here's something that's been bugging me when I replay Doom... In E2M8, the cyberdemon always gets stuck in one of the ammo rooms. When I was a kid I don't remember this happening so much. Now it's literally every time I play that level. Was the pathfinding different in the earlier releases, or is it a sourceport thing, or was I just luckier as a kid. Because that just takes all the fun I had in the level.
