The concept of "gens" only really applies to home consoles, it's not fair to use it in regards to arcade games. Arcade systems typically have much shorter lifespans because the issue of long-term customer support doesn't exist, the arcade machine will be replaced quickly in any case. In case of Namco there were usually two or more per one console generation.

Yes, but those are not the versions you posted, those wouldn't say "insert coin". And they came with downgrades in graphics quality more often than not, including character models. Which is very important when considering the premise of your thread. Home console ports of arcade games with visual upgrades and not downgrades only happened during the 5th to 6th gen transition because of timing.

What do you think of Silent Hill's models? I know it has great atmosphere yet models always bugged me even on a CRT. I think it has much worse looking models compared to Resident Evil.

OP here, I also made that thread about 6th gen models without fighting games.
I thought same thing shouldn't apply here because of heavy use of prerendered backgrounds. PS1 and Saturn fighting game arcade ports generally use prerendered backgrounds.
I guess it was a bad decision because considering the advantage they have by only having to render two characters.
I thought maybe including arcade games wasn't a bad idea to include more games.
I agree I made a bad decision. Ultimately this will leave us with mainly fighting games or arcade games. Sorry.

I think Vagrant Story is the best game with realistic models. Parasite Eve 2 is the second best.
It's harder to make a thread like this because of all HD rendered models. I have to capture it myself or use very old badly compressed images.

Of course they look worse, Silent Hill is fully 3d so it has to measure how many polygons any one thing gets. By using pre-rendered backgrounds you get to save a lot on backgrounds that can be used elsewhere.

I don't think that's it. Here take a look at Dino Crisis. It looks much better than Silent Hill's models despite being 3D. They went back to prerenders for the sequel because 3D areas look worse. Not because of models.

Well, when you take the complexity of the environment into account, Dino Crisis is mostly square corridors and simple architecture, while Silent Hill has way more details in the environment.

Silent Hill also uses a lot of effects to create great atmosphere. Maybe that needs to be kept in mind. At the same time it always felt a bit crude. I think Capcom was better than them.

But is it like that because it's actually supposed to look that way, or was that picture originally a JPEG and those are just the effects of aggressive JPEG chroma downsampling? But I don't think it matters either way, emulation with enhancements will make your models look drastically better just by fixing PS1's broken texture transformations, so it's not fair to compare it like that to screenshots of games running on real hardware.

FF VIII models doesn't look that bad at low res. People attack them for wrong reason while using high res. It's fine for what it is. I agree they shouldn't have gone with realistic models.

You wouldn't be wrong even if it wasn't the ps1 version. I heard Capcom emulated the PS1 GTE in the official PC port, so it wouldn't suprise me if that was the case for the DC version as well since it had the same (or similar, I haven't watched a video of it in forever) model and texture issues.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories had superb 3D models on the PS1, it had 722 cards with most being monster cards, and all of these got their own 3D model for fully animated combat, it's a treat, of course not all of them look good, but the ones that do... look superb for the hardware.

Enable all the geometry corrections for god's sake, the ps1's inability to render 3d properly is torture in anything other than 240 on a crt, and even then it looked pretty noticeable.
