is this the best controller? i feel like the shape, joystick placement, and the dpad feel make it the best controller

...but i will accept the saturn pad as well, because of its equally great dpad and the 6 button layout is better for some games, although im not a fan of the L and R buttons

It sucks. Too small for adult hands. Awful D-pad. Making every button analog was a terrible idea because it adds latency. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either a Playstation fanboy or blinded by nostalgia and hasn't held it in their hands since they were a child. $20 chink controllers are better nowadays. I sold my official PS2 controller and now exclusively use Gamesir T3s with Blueretro on my PS2, and surprisingly the latter feels better to use through Bluetooth than the former did though a wired connection.

its different but i dont think theres actually anything wrong with it, its just preference. ive noticed im much more likely to switch between joystick and dpad on a ps1 controller because the dpad is actually useable, unlike gamecube or xbox (yes xbone dpad is still shit)

I hate how the analog sticks touch my hands when I try to access the d-pad. I usually prefer just using the Playstation Controller (the dpad only dualshock) for 2D games and just use the dualshock for the few PS1 games that were designed for it

No, it isn't... but it did set the foundation to what would become the peak of video game controllers many years later.
I'm not kidding, even when emulating PS1 and PS2, I can't go back to a more "accurate" controller for those consoles after this.

DualSense is better than any DualShock and I can't recommend it enough for PS1 emulation over a more DualShock like controller.

No, only if your DS4 isn't working well anymore, if so then a DS over a new DS4 sounds good, but don't get a DS if your DS4's working fine since its not a huge difference, I like the DS better, but it isn't worth the price if you don't really need it... also, don't get the edge unless you want those extra features, it's expensive and feels the same.

Hey, you have a good point.
Anyways I still feel that, for symmetrical sticks, Wii U's Pro controller did it better than Sony.
Sony's still making the only modern controller that feels perfect for 2D though, and I appreciate that from them, it's also less uncomfortable for me to have the analog in the secondary position over the buttons, so it's better than the others at being a jack of all trades to me.

For retro, the most comfortable would have to be the NEO GEO controller.

If I want to play something 2D, I go for a SEGA styled controller thanks to their d-pad and the 6-button layout, if I need a diamond layout though, then PlayStation's often quite good. Now, for 3D it depends, 1st person it's fine, but I prefer that layout Nintendo went with for the Wii U, though the PlayStation layout is serviceable, but when it comes to 3rd person it doesn't feel as good and the asymmetrical layout is more comfortable. As an all rounder though, DualShock is the best still.

DS2 and DS3 controllers are weird because the D-Pad feels like mushy shit, but it's a very precise D-Pad especially on a new unit. You can't feel any actuation but it generally gets you where you want to go and does an okay job with fighting games. Sucks that the shallow profile makes diagonals hard to press.

I hate the DS4 D-Pad. No actuation, less accurate, too many unintended diagonals and missed diagonals, makes my thumb hurt. DS5 improved on it a lot but the cheap analog sticks make them worthless after about 9 months on average.

>> No.10758315

It's very high up there in terms on controller quality. The dpad is also quite good as the separated parts allow for precise transitions without accidently hitting other parts. It would make an excellent f-zero dad oddly. That is a game where you want to carefully apply different parts of the dpad for very specific durations without any slip ups.

At least on DS2 it's dependant on the specific unit you come across
There's three different manufacturers and something like half a dozen totally different variants from each manufacturer, so a lot of variance between how the controllers actually feel.
No idea on whether the DS3 was already a single manufacturer or not, but there are at least multiple models of it notably the early hall effect stick units so there might be different dpads too.

>No idea on whether the DS3 was already a single manufacturer or not,
DS3 has even bigger variations than the previous generations with structurally different shells and completely operationally different joysticks. I've never used a late run DS3 but the d-pad on the US launch window one I use is very, very different than the Sixaxis I have.

Yeah, it's a big part of why buying PS2 controllers is such a gamble. It's the hardiest controller that has all the buttons you need so it can do every platform, but it's a jack-of-all-trades master of none situation. It's only a master at not crapping out after 9 months if you get lucky with the manufacturing revision, and they all feel really different even within the same manufacturing run. And I've stopped trying to buy SixAxis and DS3 controllers because the market is so flooded with counterfeits. :/ Really do wish the DualSense had a much better battery life and hall effect sticks, that'd be the end game for me. I have minor gripes about it but it'd be a much better general controller than DS2 if it would only last longer.
