DKC renders and graphics in general were considered revolutionary at the time, but I don't think they had too much impact on the fascination with renders in 2010+. Jurassic Park And Terminator 2. Thus began the never ending shit trend of western video game publishers marketing games like movies. Pushing more graphical fidelity and cinematics. Dont get me wrong I do enjoy beautiful prerendered backgrounds and sprites but the focus on "realistic" graphics over gameplay has been a detriment. Games will never be real and should have stopped trying to achieve realistic uncanny valley graphics. Primitive fantasy and sci-fi graphics will look much better because there is suspension of disbelief.

There is a 99.99999% chance that it was Maya, don't bother reaching out to Mitsuhiro Arita, his website says he only answers questions if you donate to his ko-fi and ask it there.

It's entirely possible Keiji Kinebuchi wasn't using Maya on an SGI Onyx workstation but consider the following: Nintendo had a partnership with SGI from the early 90s until the end of the N64, everyone who was Nintendo adjacent (and even Square) were using SGI Onyx machines, and Keiji Kinebuchi would need to have years and years of experience and university level education to use an alternative to Maya in the Toy Story age of CGI. And just for a few simple trading cards? No fucking way.

Most of them were, but after a while making pre-renders was something feasible on regular desktops using copy-cat software and SGI was no longer the only brand being used by game companies. Fun Fact: Rare was STILL using SGI machines for pre-renders even after Microsoft bought them out simply because their data files were still on them, you can see these for the GBA and DS games they made like Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge.
